The present invention relates to collecting, folding, and dehvery apparatus of rotary web perfecting presses, and more particu larly to the construction andmode of opera.-
tion of the. collecting cylinder of a press of of the oncoming web, and the two are led forward together and adjacent to each other around the folding cylinder whena second section is cut from the web. The two sections are then folded together and delivered as the finished product.
If the trailing edge of the first section overlaps the cutting knife when the second section is cut, narrow strips of paper, which the pressmen call sauerkraut will be cut from. the first section. This is undesirable and objectionable. i i

V The growth in modern newspaper work now requires. a press capable of collecting and folding a product varying in size from a few pages to sixty-four or more pages, and this demand has greatly complicated the problem of collecting. I y

To overcome thesefdifiiculties forj'webs of varying thickness, 1 reduce somewhat the diameter of the cutting and collecting cyl-' inder itself, and reduce the effective length of its circumference. The effective length of itscircumference I find can be reduced by increasing the recessed or relieved part of the" cylinder, provided in the Evensen pat ent above mentioned, to form 'a longerde-- piession. Then to compensate for difierent thicknesses .o'f'webs to be run through the I 1nachine,I provide adjustablemeans for filling out to varying degree the aforesaiddepression in order to change. the effective length of the circumferenoeof the cylinder;
This means maybe a plurality of fingers pivoted together to extend fiout of the body of the cylinder to ffillout the depression,
or it may be a plate likewise pivoted' ian'd capable of swingingoutto varying degree to fill out the depression, or anyjother suitable means of equivalent effect. 3
Now,.in order to acquaint thoseskilled 7 1n the art with the manner of constructing and using a device embodying my invention, I shall describe in connection with the drawingsja machineemploy ing my invention. I A cover plate 25 is placed at each end "of the cap screws moving through slots 29 in the end plates '25 'to'permit of common adjustment of the plates or fingers 19 simultaneously. It can now be seen that by releasing the cap screws 28 the plates or .fingers 19 may be swung in common inwardly or" outwardly with respect to the slots 18, so as to bring a greater or less extent of said plates up to the main periphery of the cylinder 5. By this means the effective length of the circumference of the cylinder 5 may be varied without interfering with the portion of the recess or depression immediately in advance of the knife 7.
While I have shown the adjustment plates or fingers as being disposed in the forward part of the continuous depression 17 it is to be understood that a depression might be formed upon another part of the periphery of the cylinder 5, and its extent varied by like means without departing from my invention.
Also, instead of having a series of fingers or plates 19 extending through the slots 18, a continuous or overhanging plate, such as shown at 30 in Fig. 8, might be employed, either in connection with a part of the depression 17 or a separate depression, as may be desired. As shown in Figs. 8 and 9 a longitudinal recess 31 is formed in the bottom of the depression 17'adjacent its leading edge 32, and in this longitudinal recess a curved plate 30 is seated, this plate having at its ends pivot lugs 33 pivoted oncap screws 34 which are threaded through plates 35 secured upon the ends of the cylinder 5. The plates 35 are secured upon the ends of the cylinder 5 by the machine screws 36 which have counter sunk heads and the shanks of which are threaded into the main body of the cylinder. The opposite ends of the end plates 35 are secured by like machine screws 37 having counter sunk heads and shanks likewise threaded into the main body of the cylinder. The longitudinal adjusting plates 30 have slotted lugs 38 with adjustable cap screws 39 passing through the slots and threaded into the plates 35 to clamp the slotted lugs in any desired position. Thus, by loosening the cap screws 39 and swinging the adjustable plate 30 about the pivot '34,

It may now be seen that my invention pro vides a cylinder which is adjustable incircumferential length without 4 interfering with the are of the depression-which receives the trailing edge of the first section or sheet, so that assuming that the proper length of circumference of the cylinder has been provided, the trailing edgeofthe first section or sheet will be permitted to be 7 thrown into the depression or recess to prevent the same bemg again out by the knlfe 7,
It will also be seen that by changing the j effective circumference of the cylinder provision is made for handling sheets or sec tions cut from webs of different thickness.
By my invention it is possible to make the cylinder considerably under size to take care of large products because I can bring out the circumference to any size, within limits, for proper operation with a smaller product. i

A collecting cylinder having a portion of its periphery depressed, the depressed portion being arranged to receive the rear end of the web, and adjustable means mounted on said cylinder for filling out aportion of said. depression to accommodate the cylinder to various thicknesses of web.
