TIME SWITCH FOR PARKING LAMPS.
Application filed October 23, 1922. Serial No. 596,370.
This invention relates to an automatic switch for it parking lump of a motor vehicle, the general object of the invention being to provide a. time switch tor closing the circuit of the lump at any desired time and breaking the circuit utter the elapse of n prmietermined period of time.
Another object of the invention is to :18-
sociate the switch with o clock which may be located on the dash of the ii'istruinent so that the device will also out ttS it time recorder us well as on automatic switch for the parking lump.
'lhis invention also consists in certain other features oi construction and in the comhirmtion and urruinreii'ieii t of the several niirts, to he hereinafter trill descc d, ilhistruted in the ucconi ionying drawings and SfKH'lllCillh'j' pointed out in the appended (jiiiilll.
in describing my invention in detail, refei'ence will he had to the accompanying drziwings wherein lihe characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several \'ie\\'s. zuul in which? Figure l is u :lront view of the invention.
i*ig ure 2 is :1 section on line ll-3 oi Figure 1..
Figure I; ure 2.
Figure 4; is a rear view (it the time piece with parts broken away.
l igurc 5 is :2 section on line 6-6 of Figure Figure (5 is it View of u n'iodiiii-ntion.
Fi UIe T is :1, cross section through the contact members.
in these views l ii'idicntes :1 casing which is prefeinhly secured to the dash of the motor vehicle. Within this casing is located a pair oi? spring contacts 2 which are insulated lroin each other and which arranged in the circuit of the parking lamp. A time piece 5 is curried by the casing it being detschubly connected therewith by means of the hinged part 6 which is so arranged as to expose the face of the time piece so that the time can be read therefrom. This time piece has odjus-itzibiy secured to its rem face :1 spring strip 7 which carries a projection S of insulating niuterizil which projects :1 section on line l-- t of Fig- (on w through :1 hole 9 in the transparent rear cover l0 oi the time piece. The parts are so arranged that when the strip 7 is forced outwardly, by means hereinafter to be desuribed, the projection S will engage one of the spring contacts 2 and press it against the other contact, thus closing the circuit to the parking lamp. The means for moving said strip "1' consists of u toothed wheel 11 which is actuated from the minute hand arbor 12 through means of the disc 13 and pin 14 and which curries a cam 15 for engaging the pointed end of the strip 7 so as to raise the strip and then when. the com leaves the pointed end the strip will return to its normal position and thus permit the contacts 2 to spring apart and break the circuit. As will be seen the wheel 11 is given a step by step rotation and is moved one step upon each revolution of the minute hand arbor.
The wheel ll is rotatably mounted on a set screw 17 and its teeth are engaged by a spring pawl i8 which is udjustably held to the time piece by the screw and slot connection if). A. switch is connected with the casing l so that the circuit can be broken at any desired time by pulling out the slide :21 and thus making it gap between the terminals 22 to which the conductors 23 are connected.
From the toregoing it will be seen that the wheel ill will be rotated from the minute hand arbor so that at a certain time the cum will he brought under the pointed end of the strip 7 so as to force the projection 8 curried by the strip against one of the spring contacts 2 to press the some against the other contact, thus closing the circuit to the perking lump to light the some. The circuit will remain closed and the lamp lighted until the wheel has moved it sullicient distance to cause the com to pass from under the strip when the strip will spring back to its normal position, thus permitting the contacts 2 to separate and thus hrenl; the circuit. The wheel ll. can be adjusted manually to bring the cam under the strip at any desired time and the adjustable pawl 18 not onl acts to prevent the too free movement of the wheel but also acts as a means of making a line adjustment of the wheel so that the lights can he turned on between the hours.
In the modification shown in Figure 6 the cam 15 engages a spring arm 7 which acts to force an insulated contact button 26 on the spring blade 2 against a. similar contact button on another blade and thus close the circuit to the parking lamp as before described. This spring arm T passes through a slot 2% in the rim of the cover 10 and said arm moves in a plane parallel to the rear :tace of the time piece. The. cam 15" is of semi-circular shape and its curved edgeen gages the arm, The wheel 11 is engaged by a. pinion on the. minute hand arbor oi the time piece. By having the contact lnittons 6 insulated from their blades there is no danger of magnetizing the Watch mechanism. In other respects this term of the invention is similar to that above described.
It will be seen that this invention provides means whereby a motorist can cause a parking lamp to be lighted when it becomes dark enough to have a light and then the lamp will be extinguished the next morning it it has not been extinguished before by means of the switch 20.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes tall within the scope oi the appended claim.
W'hat I claim is A SWltCll operating device comprising a 7 time piece, a spring member therein having a part projecting therefrom tor engaging a switch, a toothed wheel in the time piece, a cam thereon for engaging the spring memher to cause the same to actuate the. switch and means for giving the toothed wheel a step by step movement ti-om the mimue arbor of the time piece.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
