CLOSURF. FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed September This invention relates to container\,` for liquids senil-liquids, powders, ec., and closures theretor.
Containers for palnts, oils. putty. as well as fine powders, etc., should be provided with air-tight leali-prooi` closures so that they can be shipped and stored without leakage or evaporation. The closure should also be securely seated so that rough handling cannot dislodge or loosen it. and yet it should be readily removable to permit ot' easy access to the contents ot' the container. Again, after the closure has been removed it should be possible to replace it quickly and easily and in its original leak-prooi' con dition. Various closures purporting` to tulfill these requirements have been proposed but these. if successful, have involved the use of relatively expensive securingl means which has limited their field ot usetnluess. It is the object of the present invention to provide a container having' a closure possessing the attributes given above, and which is simple to use and inexpensive to nianufacture. I attain this object bv providing the upper edge of the container with a double bend` spacing the outer two wallsI or plies thereof apart to tiorm an annular groove for the reception et a dependingl flange on the cover. and providing at the base of this annular groove a series ot' spaced slots which receive similarly spaced lugs or tongues on the cover flange. After the cove r is seated these tongues are bent outward thus firmly seating the cover on the body ot the container and at the saine time securely locking it in place. In order to insure a leak-proof joint I place a packing ring adjacent the base ot the flange on the cover.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, I have illustrated certain preferred embodiments ott it in the arcompanyingr drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section. of a container equipped with the closur'.` o l? the present invention, the cover being illustrated slightly above the body ot the container and in readiness to be placed in position: Figure 2 is a vertical section through the top ot the container showing the cover in position; Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the cover receiving groove on the body: Figure 4f is a fragmentary section similar to Figure 2 Showing a modified -form ot cover in position, and Figure 5 is a fragmentary verti- 17, 1825. Serial No. 56,893.
cal section through a moditied lorui ot the body.
Referring first to liligures l, 2 and 3. l-
represents the body of a container, preterabty made o t sheet metal and cylindrical in torni. rIhe upper end ot the cylindrical 'all of this bothv member is provided with a double bend, the inner walls or plies of which are in contact while the outer ply is spaced somewhat from the intermediate forming an annular groove f2 which encirclef.' tlu` top oft' the container and lies external thereot'. 'Ihe body is thus provided with an inner top edge 3 and an outer top edge 4. he bottoni of' this groove 2 is providedwith a series of spaced slots 5 which extend throughout its entire circumference.
The container is provided with a cover (i, the periphery ot. which is bent to forni an inverted groove T the outer wall or flange 8 oli' which extends downward beyond thei inner wall and lits snugly within the annular groove Q on the body. This flange 8 is provided, around its lower edge, with a series ot spaced lugs or tonguesf) which extend through the spaced slots?) in the base of the groove 2 when the cover is in position, and at the same time the inner top edge 3 ot the body lies within the, groove T and is einbraced thereby. At -the bottom ot the groove T I place an annular strip oi packing ll which bears against the inner upper edge 3 ot the bod)l when the cover is in position.
In order to secure the cover upon the body when in position, I bend the tongues 9 outwardly as illustrated on the left-hand side of' Figure 2, thus clinching the cover upon the body and drawingthe packing Il snugly against the top edge Then it becomes necessary to remove the cover the tongues t) are bent downward and the cover readily withdrawn,
In Figure ft I have illustrated a modified ilorin of cover in which the groove 7 ter1ninatos in a bead l2 reinforced by means of a ring 13.
In Figure the outer wall of the groove 2 is made `flush with the outer wall of the body, he inner wall being in consequence provided with a shoulder or ott-set 14.
The container illustrated and described is simpl-e to use and inexpensive to make. The closure itselt consists ot only two parts exclusive ot the packing and there is nothing to get out of order or lost. The double bend Oil n the top of the body effectively reinforces that member :md insures the retention of the originel shape et all times, thus aoljtatiiog the removal and replacing of rhe cover. The dotted holes at the buse oi the groove on the body make i1; impossible for H115 groove to become clogged with dirt or the eomienrs of the. container, and, thus there is nothing to interfere with repeeug he cover when it is necessary to do so.
I Claim:
In a, container having sopzufable body and cov-er members, J[he combination of e double bend in the Wall oi the body at its top forming inner and outer rop edges and :111 X5 otermediae open annular groove? spaced sloe in the bottom oirl the groomf ein inw/'erred :umuar groove on the periphery of the Cover which enfll'ufeeee the inner top edge of the body when the cover is in position, tongues depending); from i'he outer wel] or ange of the @over extending through the More in H10 xotioro of the body groove and packing at the bottom of the groove on the cover.
