My present invention relates to improvements in filling devices which while adapted for use in various ways and for numerous purposes, is especially designed for use in service Stations, garages, and other places for supplying oil in predetermined quantity to the crank case Or other parts of an automotive vehicle. The invention contemplates the use of a container, receptacle, or jar of predetermined capacity of liquid measure, which is provided with a metal Cap or closure, preferably of the screw type, and embodying a specially constructed filling noz- Zle or funnel and pouring spout, the parts being combined and arranged in such manner as to insure proper venting of the receptacle to permit rapid flow O' the oil into the jar while it is being filled, and also to permit rapid flow of the oil from the jar while it is being emptied, without waste of oil in either instance.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangement of parts involving the closure cap, its fllling noZZle, and the pouring spout as will be hereinatter more specifically set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention in which the parts are combined and arranged according to the best mode I have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the physical embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view of the device in upright position; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device in pouring position.
In carrying out my invention, I utiliZe a suitable receptacle or container, which may be a glass jar 1 similar to the type of jar used known as the Mason fruit jar, which is provided with an exteriorly threaded neck V 2 having an annular flange 3.
The closure for the jar comprises a metallic cap 4 adapted to screW on the threaded neck, and provided with a flange 5 and a gasket 6 located between the flange 5 and flange 3 to prevent leakage of the oil.
The pouring spout 7 which is disposecl at a suitable angle from the cap is fashioned integrally with the top portion of the Cap, and is Open at all times. The filling noZZle which also opens through the top of the cap is provided with an elbow 8 and from this Serial No. 135,552.
elbow a tapered body portion 9 projects at an angle from the elbow and terminates in a funnel end 10. A bypass 11 connects the pouring spout and the fllling noZZle as indicated in the drawings.
The vessel Or jar is filled through the funnel 10 when the device is held in position of Figs. 1 and 2, and the pouring spout 7 of course vents the interior of the jar so that the Oil will rapidly flow thereto. The jar may be a pint, quart or gallon jar, and as indicated in Fig. 2 is filled up to the top of the neck portion 2.
In pouring the oil through the spout 7 the device is turned to the position of Fig. 3 and the filling noZZle forms a vent to permit rapid flow of the Oil through the pouring spout 7 The elbow 8 as seen in Fig. 3 forms a pocket for Oil and the atmospheric pressure on the oil in this pocket provides for the free flow of Oil from the spout 7. In this position of Fig. 3, the bottom of the funnel end 10 is located above the top of the neck of the jar to prevent the level of oil in the pocket formed by the elbow 8 from reaching a point where the oil could flow out through the funnel end 10. The by-pass 11 permits oil to flow from the pocket formed by the elbow 8 into the pouring spout, and also drains the oil from this pocket into the pouring spout when the supply of oil in the jar has flowed therefrom. From the above description taken in connection With my drawings, it Will be apparent that I have provided a device of this Character which may quickly be filled and quickly emptied Or discharged and which insures the proper liquid measurement without leakage of Oil from the jar. The cap or closure of course remains on the vessel, but is a detachable element of the device and of course the cap may be made in various SiZes for use with various siZes of jars, and itmay be re-used when a jar is broken.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a container and a removable closure cap having a pouring spout, of a filling noZZle 'fashioned with an elbow, and an upwardly inclined barrel having an angularly funnel shaped end with its inletedge parallel with the top of the cap.
2. The combination with a container and a removable closure Cap having a pouring Spout, of a fillng nOZZ1e fashioned With an elbow to provide a ponring pocket and an upwardly inclined barrel extendng from said pocket, an angularly disposed funnel end on said barrel, and a by-pass connecting Said pouring spout and filling nOZZIe.
3. The combination With a jar having a thi'eaded neck, of a threaded closnre cap having a pouring spont. a filling nozzle integral With Said Cap and fashioned With an elbow adapted to form a pouring pocket, a by-pass connecting said eiboW and pourng spout, an angulary dsposed barrel ntegral With said eIbOW, and a unnel Shaped end to said barrel having its onter edge snbstantially parallel With the top of the cap.
