TheI barrel 3l extends somewhat rearward from the plane of the escapement wheel entering a depression or seat 34E of a circular housing or ratchet boX 35, in which are housed the usual spring pressed pawls 36 that cooperate with a ratchet 37 to give a one-way connection between the ratchet box and shaft 25 on one hand and the quill 30, 3l and the escapement wheel 27, 28 on the other. The pawls 38 are pivoted on the quill and the ratchet is formed in the box 35. The ratchet box 35 is fixedly secured tothe shaft 25 by set screws 38 which are threaded through the hub 35a and abut against the shaft. The rear end portion of the shaft bears directly in the rear bearing or bracket portion 2Gb. Referring to Fig. 2. it will be observed that rearward endwise displacement of the shaft 25 is prevented by the feed pinion 24, said pinion being rigid with the front end of the shaft and having a boss or hub 2li Yhieh abuts against the front upright face of the forward bearing 26e. As a consequence, rearward displacement of the quill and escapement wheel along the shaft are prevented through coaction of the rear end of the quill with the bottom of the seat in the ratchet box 35, which is fixed to the shaft 25. On the other hand, forward displacement of the quill is prevented by cooperation of its flange 33 with the front bearing 26, thus preventing forward displacement of theI shaft 25 through the coaction of the bottom of the seat 34 in the ratchet box 35 with the rear end of the barrel 31. The construction is such that separate or individual thrust collars are eliminated, while at the saine time displacement of the escapement wheel and associate parts relative to their bearings is prevented, without, however, interfering with the free rotation of the wheel and said parts.
Cooperative with the escapement wheel 27, 23 are escaijiement dogs 39 and at), mounted at the top of a dog carrier or rocker Lll. adapted to vibrate on pivot pins 42, projecting inward from ears 26C that extend rearward from the lower end portion of the bracket 26. Fixed to the rocker ell which is preferably the style now employed in the Smith Premier No. (3() machine and extending' downward below the pivotal axis thereof is an arm d3 which at its lower end carries a lateralljy extending cross pin 4d, which provides means for connecting' the rocker with the universal bar mechanism at the right of the arm f3 and with the space bar at the left of said arm.
ln the present instance the universal liar mechanism is adapted to be actuated by the type bars. 'ihe universal har V is arcuate in shape and is mounted or siqiported on the type bar segment l2, being housed in a slot i-(3, out in the rear of said .segment and so located that the forward edge of the universal bar is adapted to be engaged and actuated by Contact faces 10" on the type bars l0 as they approach the printing point on the platen. rihe universal bar when thus actuated is adapted to be moved rearward, being supported and guided in the usual way by devices shiftable with the segment, one of the guiding devices being a pin d'7 which projects forward from an ear 4S, integral with the universal bar l5, said pin having a sliding fit in a hole or guide opening etlin the segment. The universal bar has rearwardly extending' side arms 50, each pivotally connected at 5l with the forked end of a crank arm 52, extending upward from a. rock shaft 53. The rock shaft 53 is pivoted on end pivots supported by arms 5d which are adapted to shift with the type bar segment during case shifting operations. Rigid with the rock shaft 53 is an arri 55. carrying a pivot 56 'on which is supported a triangular plate 57 slotted at 58 to rcceive a clamping screw or device 59 that is carried by the arm and serves to se cure the pivoted plate 57 in adjusted relationships therewith. At its forward end portion the plate 57 carries a lateral pin 60 which cooperates with the forward slotted end of a link G1. The construction involving the adjustable plate or pivot carrier 57 is the invention of J. B.
Lesage/4 Holden and is fully disclosed and claimed in his prior application Sr. No. 661,618, tiled September 8, 1923. rlfhe rear end ot' said link 61 is slotted to tit over and cooperate with a circumferential groove 4A in the right-hand end portion ot the pin 4a, said link connectingthe oscillator, comprising the rock shaft 53 and its crank arms, with the dog rocker ill. The construction is such that when one ot the typ-e bars lO is actuated to print, the contact tace l0 engaging] with the universal bar 45 will move the latter rearward and rock the shaft n?) so as to swing the arm 55 rearward and downward, this motion being;l transmitted to the plate 57, lixed to and carried by said arm so that the pin (St) acting against the link (ll will thrust it rearward. This thrust beingl transmitted to the pin la and arm Ll?) will rock the rocker -lvl and cause the dogs 239 and Ll() to cooperate with the escapement wheel. The parts will be restored to normal position by springs not. herein shown, the. result. being that at each type bar actuation the escapemcnt devices will coact to attord a unit ot letter space movement ot the platen carriage and platen.
The escapement mechanism is also adapted to be actuated by the space bar or key (32. Said space bar is comprised in a space har 'frame which further includes parallel side arms or levers G3 which are curved upward at their front ends and connected by the space bar 62 which extends cross-wise ot the machine between them. The rear ends ot the arms 63 are connected by squared croi-'s vbar 64. rl`he upper edges ort the side arms` (33 are termed with semi-circular seats or depressions 65 to cooperate with the under side ol a pivot rod or shaft ($6 that is mounted at. its ends on supports 6T. 'lhe rod (SG may be stationary but in the presentinstance I prefer to make use ot the rock sha't't ot the case shitting' mechanism. ln order to maintain the space bar trame in cooperative engagement with the pivot rod or shat't (S6, adjustable bearing` members in the form ot plates 68 are slidably or adjustably supported on the arms (lll. Each plate or slide 68 is termed withv a rearward extension or horn 69, the under side ot which is shaped to coact with the top tace ot the pivot rod 6G. In addition each ot the slides or catches (S8 is Yformed with top and bot-tom laterally bent lips 70 and 7l which titl over the associate arm (33, the said lips coactingwith the top and bottom edges ot' the arm (33 so as to hold the bearing plate G8, G9 in lixed relationship therewith atter said bearing plate has been secured in place. For this purpose the plate is tornied with an elongated slot T2 which receives headed screws 73 that are threaded into the arms 63. The construction is such that when the space bar (32 is depressed itwill rock the space bar trame on the pivot rod 66, the bearing seats 65 and the extension 69 so eooperating with said rod that they almost completely surround it and provide bearings tor the space bar trame thereon. However, by removing the rear screws 723 and loosening the forward screws the plates (58 may be slid forward on the arms 63, freeing' the space bar frame so that it may readily be removed from the machine without disturbing' the rod 66. rllhis is a usetul improvement since in prior constructions .it has been necessary to go to the trouble ot removing the rod or support in order to remove the space bar trame. The upward movements ot the space bar trame are limited by stop devices comprising` an arm Tl secured to the under side otl the space bar 62 and provided with a pad 75 which is normally maintained in contact with the trent portion otl the base l by springs 76 `which bear on the arms 63 in rear ot the pivot rod (S6. Downward movements ot' the space bar ($2 are limited by a stop member ZT secured by a screw 78 to the 'front portion ot the base l. Fixed about centrally to the cross bar tl-l is an angular arm or member T9 'which extends rearward from the bar (Siland is bent or curved upward, its upper end carryingr a lateral headed pin 8() which cooperates with the slotted rear end ot an arm Sl tha tl is adjustably secured to an angular lever S2. The said lever Si is 'l'i'ilcrumed on a screw pivot 83 that is threaded into a dowiiward extension 2G otl the bracket 98. 'l`l'ic end or hip portion 82"* ot the upper arm ot said lever 82 is adapted to contact with the cross pin 44 which as shown in Fig. 3 is extended laterally let'tward into the plane oit said arm 82. The construction is such that when the space bar (3Q is depressed it will rock the space bar trame on the rod or axis ($6, swinging' upward the cross bar t-.t which carries with it the arm 79 and pin 80, the motion ot the pin being transmitted to the lever member 8l, 82, the upper lever arm acting,y on the dog rocker to cause the escapen'ient dogs in cooperation with the escapement wheel to afford a teed movement of the carriage and platen. By reason ot the pin-and-slot connection between the link Gl and the rocker arm 43, said link and the connecting' universal bar devices will not be affected when the dog rocker is actuated from the space ear by the lever 82.
The line lock mechanism is operated bv contact devices supported on a toothed bar 8st arranged about the upper track bz r '-l; and pivotally supported at its ends on pivots 85 secured in lugs 8G projecting' upward 'from the track bar. Adjustable on the stop bar 84 are a number ot contact devices or stops including` the one numbered 87 which is provided with two contacts or projections 88 and S9, the contact S8 being,` etlective to operate the bell ringing mechanism not shown, while the other contact S9 actuates the line lock mechanism. Mounted adjustably on the bar S1, to the lett ot the device o 87, is a contact device or stop provided with a lug' or stop proper 91 which cooperates with the line lock mechanism to provide a final stop t'or the line. There may also be provided a stop member 92 having a stop lug 93 and secured by screws 91 to the front ot' the track bar 11- tor the purpose ot preventing accidental displacement o l the carriage Vtrom its trackways in cooperation with the upstanding;v stop D5 fecured to the Jfront ot the carriage bar i" by screws 90. integral with the stop 05 is a stop 97 which cooperates with an oppositel'v disposed stop luaA 08 on the carriage to limit movements ot the carriage-carried liuc lock stop nien'iber or contact. Said member in the present vinstance is iu thc Yt'oriu ot a` bell crank 99 having an upstaniliue1 arm` 100 and a riglitwardly extendiiml horizontal arm 101, terminating in a rearward projection 102. Said bell crank or lever 00 is pivotcd at 1021 on the carriage bar T. The upright arui 100 of the hell crank is coutiued loo-sv ly between the lugs or stops 97 and 05% which limit its pivotal movements, said bell crank brine' normally maintained aeaiust the stop 0T by a spring v101. The extension 102 ot the bell crank constantly ovcrlies the upper edge ot a bar or bail 105 arranged in trout ot and parallel wii'li the lower track bar said bail having;` rearwardly bent cars which. receive pivot screws 100 threaded into the track bar 5. lcat spring; 10T secured to the left-hand side ot' the top plate by screws 10S maintains the bail 105 in normal position and restores it a't'ter actuation. Year its middle the bail 105 is formed with a rearwardly bent linger 100 which engages with a line lockingl device in the toi-m ot a hook member pivoted at 111 on the track bar 5 and provided to the lett ot its pivot with a extension or finger 119, which ovei'liesand is normally adapted to rest on the tiue'er 109, which thus sustains the hook nienihcr in the inclined position ot Fig'. 3, maintainine; the lower end or engaging portion 113 in/inoperative position. Then released the member 110 swings through the force ot gravity rightward about the pivot 111 to render the hook or engaging portion 118 effective. Said hook is adaped to coactwith an arm or stop device 114 secured by screws 115 to an arm 116 rigid with and projecting rearward from the rock shaft 53. The arm 114. terminates at its rear in an enlargement or head portion 117 which is cut out as indicated at 11S to provide a contact edge or tace 119 that is adapted to engage with the hook when the parts are in upper case position. Normally or in lower case position the hook 113 when swung to operative position will cooperate with the under edge ot the arin 11st to prevent the arm from swinning;h downward, which in turn will block or lock the rock shaft 53 and connected parts. lt will be recalled that when a type bar segment is shifted downward to upper case position the universal bar mechanisin including the rock sha't't 53 will move with it to a lower position. Such movement ot' course will be participated in by the arms 110 and 114-` as a result ot which the contac siirtace 119 will be lowered into position where it will cooperate with the line lock hook 113 when it swings over into operative position. Such swinging` movements will take place under the influence ot `gravity when the hook member 110 is released by the sustaining finger or abutment 109; or in other words when the hail 10.3 torced downward against its spring 10iN through the action ot the bell crank 00. Said hell crank in turn will be rocked or swung on its pivot 103 when the carriage in the course ot its le'ttward movemeut brings the tip ot the arm 10() iirst into engagement with the contact 88 and subsequently with the contact 89. The contact 8S, however, is ot such height in relation to the tip of the arm 100 that it will only swing` the hell crank to a slight extent, thisl beingl suiticient to actuate the bell mechanism hut not to render the hook member 110 ellective. A'tter the hell crank 99 is released by the contact 8S it will subseqiienly engage with the Contact S9, resulting in the operation above outlined, whereby the bail 105 is swung' downward on its pivots 10G, relear-:ing` the member 110 and causing the hook 113 to engage with the arm 114, thereby holding the universal bar Ll5 against movement and consequently lockingl the type barsl and preventing them from printing.
lilith the parts locked through the coacton ot" the arm 100 with the contact 89, while it was impossible in the prior construction to actuate the type bars, due to the blocking' ot the universal bar, it. was nevertheless possible under a comparatively heavy stroke to spring' the parts sutiicicntly'to cause the dog rocker 41 to vibrate and ettect an operation of the escapement mechanism, this resulting` sometimes in causing a blank in the line of printingwhere none was intended or desired. To overcome this defect I provide in the present construction. tor locking' the escapement mechanism itsel1` against operation by devices distinct trom the type-bar line-lock devices. The escapenient line lock mechanism, while highl y eillective, is quite simple and inexpensive, comprisinfr, t'cw parts and being;` applicable to the prior construction without requiring material alteration. rlhe escapement line lock devices comprise an angular member or arm 120, con'iprisinpl a securing' portion or base 121 from the lett end ot which is bent horizontally 'forward an extension 122 which is otlset inward or towards the right end, terminating' in a forwardly extending' and downwardly bent contact 123. The member 120 is secured by headed screws 124C to the 'front face ot the dog rocker about in the horizontal plane with its pivotal axis, the screws being); threaded through the base portion 121 of said member 120. As will be seen from Fic'. 3, the contact 123 is aoout in the ore-and-att vertical plane et the head 117 and the engaging' faces thereon. The contact 123 is adapted to coact with a contact which is preferably the offset upper end 125 of an arm or device 126 which is secured by headed screws 127 to the rear ace ot the depending' arm of the hook member 110.-
Normally the contact 125 is disposed at the left of the contact 123 so that the path of the latter is unobstructed during` vibrations of the dog' rocker on which it is mounted. However, when the line lock hook member 110 swings over to operative position, due to the carriage having reached the end ot its line of travel and the coaction ot the devices 10() and 89. the contact 125 will be swung rightward into the path of the contact 123 so that thereafter the forward swing' of the rocker 41 will be prevented by the engagement of the contact 123 with the contact 125. Thus, the escapement mechanism is locked against operation by one set of line lock devices 123 and 125 at the same time that the type bars are locked by another set of line locking devices 114 and 113. However` the parts are so related preferably that one set by which the type bars and universal bar are locked, only comes into use under ordinary strokes on the keys, the second set of line locking devices whereby the dop; rocker is locked, becoming etlective u1ider an abnormal or heavy stroke. This construction prevents undue strain on the dog` rocker and its connections. The devices 1 3 and 125 are in effect extensions respectively ot the dog rocker and the hook member 110, 113, and may it' preferred be formed integrally therewith.
In the prior construction disclosed in my aforesaid application Sr. No. 652,633v there was provided a separate line locking device for the space bar train, but by my present invention this separate device is dispensed with and the space bar is locked and prevented 'lroin actuating,Y the escapement mechanisin by the contacts or line lock devices 123 and 125. In other words, these devices are eli'cclivc to lock the escapenient mechanisin' trein operation both by the printing keys and the space bar.
its in the prior construction, a'l'tcr the line lock mechanism has become operative through the coaction oit the arm and the contact 89 the parts may be released to ait- 'ford the printing' ot additional characters by swinging' the stop bar Si on its pivots, lifting the contact tlf) out ot the path ot the arm 100, thus permitting' additional ifeed movements ot the carriage in lettward direction until the final arrest by the contact 91. 1t is not deemed necessary to jo into further detail ot the line locking;` operations and the arrestiup,A oi the carriail"v and platen eli'ectcd by the described contacts, since the trains ot mechanism operate in substantially the manner specified in my prior application.
Various changes in construction may bc made, and some olf the vfeatures of the invcntion may be employed without others, all without departing' trom the spirit and scope ot' the invention.
That I claim as new and 'desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is y 1. 1n a typcivriting` machine, the con'ibination ot a space bar 'trame comprising side arms and a connectingl space bar; a pivot rod; and plates detachably secured to said side arms tor retaining said 'trame on said pivot rod.
2. In a typewritingl machine, the combination ot a space bar frame, a pivot rod, and parts relatively movable on said trame 'for pivotally engaging' said rod.
3. In a typewriting` machine, the combination of a pivot rod, and a space bar 'trame pivotally mounted thereon, said trame being),` provided with relatively movable parts pivotally cooperating' with said 'trameand atordinp; ready detachment of said frame from said rod without disturbing' said rod.

of said pivot rod, bearing plates slidably mounted on said side arms and provided with extensions shaped to engage with the upper side of said pivot rod to support said tramo thereon and prevent its accidental displacement, and screws lo'r securing' said bearing' plates to said side arms, said screws when loosened permitting said plates to be moved to lree said space bar .trame lfrom said pivot rod.

In a typewriting' machine, the combination of a travellingcarriage, cooperative contacts one on the carriage and one on the frame, escapement devices comprising` a dog rocker, a type-bar-operated universal bar, a rock shaft connected therewith, an arm on said rock shaft, a line locking` hook rendered effective by said contacts to engage with and lock said arm, and an extension on said dog rocker cooperative with an extension on said hook.
