J. SCHLACKS COMBINATI ON WINDOW Filed p 29, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 3 M 5 21/ 4 Patented Apr. 26, 1927.
UNITED STATES HENRY J'. SCHLACKS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
COMBINATION WINDOW.
Application filed December 29, 1925.
My invention relates to a combination window, and the main object is to provide a movable or openable window with a smaller hinged window or casement window openably mounted therein; and another object is to provide practical and efficient metal sash or frame means for said casement window within the larger window.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafterdescribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is an elevational view of a window with a form of my invention embodied therein;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged interior view of the sash window within the slidable window;
Fig. 4: is a vertical cross sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a horizontal view of the lower portion of the frame member which is secured to the lower sash bar of the slidable window.
In the drawings I have shown my invention in connection with awindow frame 9 and an upper and lower window 10 and 11 movably or slidably mounted within said frame, in the usual manner. In this lower window 11 I mount the easement window 12, and preferably by placing it at an intermediate portion of said window, as between two fixed panes 13 and 13 within said window 11.
In mounting the casement window 12 hingedly between the fixed panes 13 and 13', I preferably fasten channel-shaped members lt on the opposing edges of the fixed panes,
as by the use of putty 15. A frame or weather member 16, substantially in the form of an L, is fastened on the channel members 14;, as with screws or fastening 51: elements 17, and includes a lower portion 16 which is fastened on the lower frame bar 11 of window 11, as with elements 18. Putty 19 is preferably also placed in the outer groove on the lower frame bar 11, as best indicated in Fig. 2, and drain open- Serial No. 78,074.
ings are provided in the lower part of portion 16'.
The casement window 12, which is mounted within the frame member 16, includes the pane 21 and a metal frame 22 substantially in the form of an angle member, mounted around the edges of said pane, by the use of putty 28 and a bead orstrip 24 which is removably fastened to member 22, as with screws 25, at the inner side of pane 21, the
removal of said strip 24.- thus permitting the removal of pane 21 from the frame 22.
A felt strip 26 is preferablyalso placed in the outer part of the frame or weather member 16 to assure a close and airtight fit for the casement window. A drip member 27 is provided integral on the outer end of angle member 22. Hinges 28 are fastened to the channel member 14 on the fixed pane 13 and to the angle members 22 and strips 24 on pane 21, and preferably by the use of the screws 17 and 25, as best indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawings. A latch member 29 is provided on the easement window to engage a member 30 on the fixed pane, for retaining the easement window in closed position.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A window construction comprising a movable window with panes fixed in opposite sides thereof and providing a space therebetween, metal channel members mounted upon the opposing edges of said fixed panes, a supporting frame having its vertical sides secured to said channel members, the top and bottom members of said supporting frame being secured to the top and bottom bars of said window, and a. casement window hingedly mounted in said support ing frame.
2. A window construction comprising a movable window with panes fixed in oppo site sides thereof and providing a space therebetween, metal channel members moun ed upon the opposing edges of said fixed panes, a supporting frame having its vertical sides secured to said channel members, the top and bottom members of said supporting frame bein secured to the top and bottom bars of said window, a casement window hingedly mounted in said supporting frame, and a drip member secured to the lower portion of said casement window and extending outwardly therefrom.
3. A window construction comprising a movable window with panes fixed therein and providing a space therebetween, metal channet members mounted upon the opposing edges of said 'fixed panes; a rectangular metalsupporting frame having its side bars substantially L-shaped in cross-section and secured to said channel members, the top and bottom bars of said frame being secured to the top and bottom bars of said window, and a casement window hingedly mounted in said supporting frame.
4. A window construction comprising a movable window with panes fixed therein and providing a space therebetween, metal channel members mounted upon the opposing edges of said fixed panes; a rectangular ing edges of said lixed panes, an L-shaped weather member fastened to said channel members and to the lower sash hair of said window, a casement window including a pane with an angle member mounted therearound, a bead removably mounted on said angle member to permit removal of said pane, hinges fastened on one of said clnrnnol members and on said angle membcr,and a drip member extending from the lower part of said angle-member and integral therewith.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
