Description

April 19 1927.
J. S. LYON COMPACT POWDER HOLDER Filed Jan. 11. 192s Patented Apr. 1K9, 1927.
UNITED .STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN S. LYON, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIG'NOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN BARTHC'LOMEW, 0F ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
COMPACT POWDER HOLDER.
Application filed January 11, 1926. Serial No. 80,514.
My present invention relates to toiletl requisites and more particularly to containers or holders for face powder. Such powder is now largely sold in compressed cakes contained in suitable boXes and supported therein in a metallic holder that prevents it from cracking or chipping and at the same time constitutes a re-fill for the boX or vanity case when desired. Such a holder is shown in my pending application Serial Number (S34-,662, filed April 26, 1923 and the present invention is an improvement on the construction therein shown whereby the holder is made light, strong and unyieldmg but is additionally provided with means for locking the powder cake therein. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and combinations. of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specifi cation.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a central section through 'a powder box containing a cake and holder constructed in accordance with and illustrating one embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the powder holder and cake;
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the powder holder, and n Figure 4L is a top view thereof before it is filled.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
Referring first to Figure l, l indicates the bodyv and 2, the lid of a common form of powder box having a cylindrical lining wall 3 over which the flanges of the lid engage. Within the box is a dome shaped powder cake i within a metallic holder indicated generally at 5.
The holder consists of a shallow dish or tray embodying a bottom 6 and al flanged rim 7 and as before stated, this must be light in weight so that it is stamped from thin sheet metal. The powder is compacted into the holder under pressure by suitable filling machinery in an eli'ort to cause it to cling so intimately to the surfaces of the holder that it will adhere thereto. However, a difficulty has been experienced in that the pressure exerted on the holder in filling tends to cause the side walls or liange 7 to spring or give outwardly under the lateral pressure of the powder. This, in turn, causes the bottom 6 to bulge upwardly so that while the cake 4 is in actual process of being molded it is molded to a tray or holder that is in distorted condition. Thus when the pressure is relieved the slightly convex bottom 6 to which the cake has been shaped recedes to a normal flat condition and drawsaway from an intimate supporting contact with the powder making loosening and breakage probable if not inevitable.
My prior application above identified, discloses means for correcting these diiculties in a very simple manner. An annular groove 8 is punched in the bottom 6 of the holder closely adjacent to the fiange or side wall 7 which forms a corresponding annuA lar rib on the inside of the holder. The crimping of the metal has the well known effect of hardening the metal so that it is less flexible and gives less of a tendency for the wall 7 to spread. It also strengthens the bottom of the holder in the region where the relative movement of the flange and bottom occurs.
In the practice of the present invention l -employ this invention of my prior application but also provide additional means for adding rigidity to the holder and at the same time locking the powder cake 4 in place. This consists of an inwardly turned flange 8 on the side wall 7 that projects downwardly at an angle as clearly shown in Figure 2. When the powder cake 4; is pressed into place, it flows under this flange and into locking engagement therewith. Aside from this locking function, the formation of this flange gives a smooth and rounded edge to the holder that is pleasing to the touch and also gives additional surface for the engagement of locking devices that may be used to retain the holder in a special receptacle.
