Referring to rthe drawings, the paper winding` reel is indicated generally at A. lt comprises a roller l through whose axis passes a spindle 2 on which the roller l is fitted tightly. The spindle 2 projects at each end beyond the ends or the roller, one end of the spindle beine'made conical, as indicated at 2a. rhe other end ot' the spindle is toothed to form a pinion 2b, beyond which the spindle is reduced in diameter to Yform a collar-portion indicated at 2c and beyond this collar-portion the spindle is further reduced in diameter to form a bearing portion 2d.
To each end of the roller 1 is detachably secured a guide disk, these disks being' indicated at 3. Each disk is made of sheet metal and has a central openingthrough whichr lVhen the disk is to be put in place, the spindle 2 is passed. through the central hole of the disk and the latter thenv .slid down on the spindle and brought into a position where the large openings or' the key-hole slots are in lin-e with the screws, thereby' allowingthe screw heads t-o pass through said openings.A By then rotatingthe disk on the spindle, the screws are received in the narrow slot portions ot the key-hole slots, the screw heads engaging the metal oil' the disk at each side of said slots, thereby holding the disk to the roller. There is sm'iicient friction between the under sides of the screw heads and the outer face or' the disk to prevent the disk from jarring loose in ordinary operation. in order to remove a disk it is only necessary to give it a. slight 'angular movement with relation to the roller to free the screws from the narrow slots and bring them into the circular openings of the key hole slots, whereupon the disk may be withdrawn. ln this way, the roll of paper wound upon the roller may be freed so that it may be slid o the roller. F or the purpose of holding the end of a paper-web the roller is provided with a paper gripping device, such as is indicated at 5. This is a plate secured to the roller, as for example, by screws indicated .at 6, the plate having' its free margin raised slightly from the roller periphery so that the end ot a web of paper may be slid beneath the said plate.

The arm l() has a center bearing arranged to support the conical end 2a of the spindle 2. In the present construction this bearing is adjustable and comprises a trunnion screw l2 slotted at its outer end and pro-vids ed with a conical recess at its inner end. The trunnion screw l2 passes through a screw-k threaded hole in the arm 10 and may be locked at any position to which it is adjusted by means of ay nut 13.

l Uli slot 14 of the arm 11, a suitable retaining means is provided,'and this is so combined with a `brake device `arranged to prevent the rotation of the spring barrel that, when the retaining meansis operated to release the spindle 2, the brake will first be applied to the spring barrel to prevent it rotating under the action of the spring. Then said retaining means is operated to bring it to a position where it will retain or lock the spindle 2 in the open slot 14, the brake will be released, but not until the spindle is locked.
lVhile the invention is not limited to the speeilic mechanism employed for accomplishing the two functions simultaneously, inthe preferred embodiment of the invention the construction is as follows:
A spring plate 31, provided with a hole through which the drinn shaft 18 may pass, is mounted on said shaft between the gearwheel 16 vand the collar 20. This spring plate is bowed so that its central portion is convex toward the side of the gear wheel 1G. The front end of the spring plate 31 carries a hook portion indicated at 32 arranged to hook over the collar-portion 2 of the spindle and thereby prevent the removal of the spindle from the slot. For convenience in operating, a thumb-piece 33 is provided, this in the present example being made integral with the hook portion. In the best embodiment of the invention, the hook portion 32 and the thumb-piece 33 are cut or stamped from a piece of sheet metal, the thumb-piece being twisted into the position shown in the drawings. This piece of sheet metal is then riveted to the end of the spring plate 31. The` spring-plate also hastwo cam devices 34 and 35, the latter consisting of a. plate beveled off at one end, and the former being a sloped portion of the hook portion 32. These cam devices are suitably secured to the spring plate 31 on that side of the plate which faces the `standard 9. These cam de- 'vices are arranged with their beveled ends pointing in opposite directions, the one (31) nearest the lioolnportion 32 being arranged with its beveled end pointing upward, and the other one ('35) having its beveled end pointing downward. Two screws, indicated at 3G, are screwed through the standard E) and its arm 11, respectively. their ends projecting' into the path of movement of the cam devices 341 and 85 so that, as the spring plate 31 is swung angularly about the drum shaft 18, by use of the thumb-piece 33, the
- cam devices 3st. and 35 will ride against the ends of the respective screws 36 and thereby the spring plate 31 will be pressed against the side of the gear wheel 16, thus applying so much friction to said gear wheel that the spring 2G will be unable to turn it.
The cam devices 311- and 35 not only have the beveled ends, but also have flat portions,
as will be clear from the drawings, so that when the cam devices have been moved far enough for thevtlat portions to contact with the ends of the screws 36. there will be no tendency for the spring plate 31 to swing back, but on the contrary it will be'rctained in its braking position.
The screws 3o, of course, can be adjusted in `or ont -to determine the braking force applied to the side of the gear wheel 16. To lock tliescrews 36 in any position to which they may be adjusted, suitable lock nuts 37 are provided.
It will be seen that when a reel is to be removed, it is only necessary to lift up on the thumb-'piece 33, thereby giving an angular movementto the spring plate 31, which swings about the drum shaft 1S as an axis. During the tirst part of this movement the beveled portions of the cam devices 34. and 35 ride over the ends of the screws 23o, and thereby `the spring plate is tensioned and pressed against the side of gear wheel 36. rlhis prevents the spring 26 from suddenly unwinding, as it would if there were no braking' means, unless lthe spring barrel or gear wheel were held b v hand. During the latter part of the angular movement of the spring plate 31. the fiat portions of the cani devices ride over the ends of the screws 36, so that when the thumb-piece is released the spring plate will stayin its braking position until force is applied to return it to its original position.
As soon as the braking device has moved sufficiently to apply enough friction to hold the spring barrel, the hooked portion l2 then releases the spindle 2, so that the latter may be withdrawn from the open slot and may then be pulled endwise to release its conical end 2L from the trunnion screw 12. The desired end disk 3 may then be given an angular' or rotary movement relative to the roller 1, to unlock the said disk. The roll of paper which is on the roller may then be slid olf the latter. By replacing the disk and replacingthe reel in its bearings, the locking and brake device may be swung angular-ly to bring the hook portion 32 down over the collar-portion 2c of the spindle 2. rllhis locks the spindle in open slot 1&1- and also releases the brake.
The spring 26 may be wound up by turning the hand crank 28. This may be done, either while the brake is on, that is before swinging the thumb-piece 33 down to hook the hook-portion over the spindle 2, or afterwards. In the latter case, it is necessary to keep one hand on the reel or spring barrel to prevent rotation of the reel while the hand crank is being turned. l
