1,625,196 J. A. DONAHOE CONTAINER FOR FOODS Filed June 1924 Patented Apr. 19, 1927.
UNITED STATES JOHN .A. DONAHOE, 01' PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTAINER FOB FOODS.
' Application filed June 5,1924. Serial No. 717,918.
This invention relates to methods and means for packing foods and more particularly foods which are relatively soft, or mushy, such as salads, dressings, puddings, etc., and which, owing to this characteristic, must be placed in individual containers.
One of the principal objects of this invention is to rovide a packing device in which various oods may be exhibitedsimultaneously in an artistic manner appealing to the public. Another object is to provide such a device in which the various foods packed therein are held against shifting in their respective places. Still another object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and which can be manufactured at relatively low cost.
Additional features and advantages will appear from the following description considered in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this application and in which:
Fig. 1. is a top plan view of the package,
the cover and the food-containers having 'lhese u been omitted.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken along line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and showing the foodcontainers.
Fig.. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 33, Fig. 1', also showings food container.
Referring to the drawing, my method of packing foods consists in placing each kind of food in an individual container or dish 1 made of pressed water-proof paper or, preferably, of an edible composition of flourdough and other in redients adapted to resist the softening e ects of the liquid matter carried in the foods. Said individual containers are suitably tapered, being wider at the open top 2 than at the base 3, and are inserted in apertures 4 shaped to conform to their respective containers and so dimensioned that the latter will be suspended therein, so that they will at all times wedge them'telves by their own weight in the apertures regardless of the unavoidable variations in size occurring in the containers. rtures are preferably cut out of a single s eet of paste-board the edges of which are folded downwardly at rightangles to form the legs or spacers 5, the whole constituting a false-bottom, or so-called frame 6.
The latter is loosely mounted within the bottom 7 of a paste-board box, or carton 8,
of usual construction, the cover 9 having preferably a curved top 10 which acts as an indicator of the correct position in which the box is to be carried to revent spilling of the salads, etc., out of t eir containers.
able shape may be stamped out of the frame 6 to act as a holding means for the elastic rubber band 16 by which a number of s oons or other eating utensils may be held in place. i
It will be understood, of course, that the shape, combination and number of the food containers and their corresponding. apertures in the frame may be varied to suit the requirements of the trade.
While I have illustrated and described herein the preferred embodimentof my invention, and one which I have found. by\ actual use to be very ractical and greatly appreciated by the pn lic, it may be found desirable after continued experience to make slight changes in the construction and arrangement of the details of \my invention, and I intend to include in this ap lication all such variations as fall within t e scope of the appended claims.
What claim is:
1. A container for foods comprising a plane frame having a plurality of apertures adapted to accommodate the individual containers for said foods; a box and a, cover for said frame; a depending tongue struck out of said frame, and means adapted to cooperate with said tongue for removably securing thereto utensils-required for eating said foods.
2. A container for foods comprising a plane frame having a plurality of aper tures adapted to accommodate the individual containers for said foods; a box and a cover for said frame; a depending tongue struck out of said frame and a rubber band adapted to cooperate with said tongue for secu rifng thereto utensils required for eating and In testimony whereof I aflix JOHN A- area"- r
