I My invention relates to devices or appliances which are adapted to be employed in connection with the permanent waving of hair.

In the art of permanent hair waving as heretofore known heaters have been employed which are of tubular shape in cross section into which the hair wound about,

Another object of the invention is to pro- I vide a simple and efficient means for retaining a curler with thereon in place within the interior of a heater appliance employed in the permanent hair waving process.

' To these and other ends the invention comprises the construction and arrangement of parts as heretofore described in detail, particularly ointed out in the claims, and as illustrated in the drawings; ,in which one convenient form of embodiment of .the invention is illustrated. It will be understood, however, that changes in the details of construction maybe madewit'hin thescope of the claims without departing from the prining hair which is provide with means emciple thereof.

Referring to the drawing: 1 designates a central tube to which is secured at a point intermediate its ends'a collar 2 of fibre or other suitable insulating material. A ta-. pcred outer casing 3 is "mounted upon the said tube, the smaller end thereof terminatmg at a point adjacent one end of the tube 1 while the opposite larger end thereof incloses the collar 2 and is secured thereto by a screw 4.

Electric heating coils 5, imbedded within insulating material 6, are mounted upon and surround the tube 1 within the chamber formed by the said tube 1 and the casing 3.

For the pur ose of retaining the rod 10 in placev I ave provided within the tube 1 at a point a considerable distance from that end of the tube into which the curling rod with the hair thereon is inserted a device for engaging the rod to hold it in placewhile the permanent waving process is-carried out. The said device comprises a collar-like member 11 of insulating material having an opening 12 therethrough. The said opening is tapered or 01 funnel shape, as shown in Fig. 1, and the wider end thereof faces toward the end-oithe tube from which the rod is inserted. The wider end of the flared opening 12' is of a diameter substantially equal to that of the internal diameter of the said tube so that upon the insertion of the rod. into the tube the end which has been inserted contacts with the tapered or converging sides of the opening 12 and is guided therethrough into engagement with the springs 13 and 14.

' These springs occupy positions upon opposite sides of the smaller end of the opening 12 and the distance between the same is less than the diameter of the rod 10 so that as the latter is projected through and beyond the opening 12 and between the said springs the latter exert-pressure thereon to retain and hold the same in place for such length of time as may be necessary while the permanent waving process is being carried out. The springs 13 and 14 are secured to the collar 11 by means of screws 15 The collar-like memberll is retained in place by a screw 16 through the side of the tube.

To facilitate the handling of the device or appliance without burning the hands I have provided a ferrule 17 of bre or other suitable heat insulating material which is secured upon the end of the tube 1 opposite that from which the rod 16 with the hair wound thereon is inserted.

It will be seen that by my invention I have provided means interiorly ot' the tube, l which is adapted to automatically engage the curler-or rod 10 upon the insertion there of into the said tube to hold it in place during the carrying out of the permanent wa ving process. By placing the said device upon the inner side of the tube I am enabled to produce an appliance of neat appearance without in any way detracting from the chiciency of the device utility thereof.

Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: a

l. A permanent hair waving device com prising a central tube having means staor interfering with the tionarily secured therein at a distance from either end thereof for automatically engagmg a hair curler when the same is inserted within the said tube and holding the same therein. i I

A permanent hair waving device comprising a central tube having a device stationarily mounted interiorly thereof a dis tance from the end into which the curler with the hair wound thereon which is to be waved is inserted, which means is adapted to engage the end of said curler which is inserted into the said tube apd retain said curler within the said tube.

3. A permanent hair waving device com prising a central tube having detachably secured thereto at a point in the interior thereof a distance fromthe end into which a hair curler is inserted elastic yielding means for engagin the inserted end of said hair curler a,nd yieIdingly holding the said curler in position therein.

4. A permanent hair waving device comprising a tubular member in which a rod on which hair is wound is adapted to be in-' serted, said tube being provided interiorly with a couple of plate springs mounted in spaced relation to each other upon opposite sides of the axis of said tube, the said 5 rings being adapted to en age and clamp tie inserted end of said rod.

5. A permanent hair waving device comprising a central tube intp which a rod upon which hair has been wound is inserted, which tube is provided upon its interior with a collar having a tapered opening therethrough, the wider end of said opening facing the end of the tube from which the said rod is'inserted and the opposite side of said collar being provided with springs which are adapted to engage the portion of the said rod which may be projected through the opening of said dollar.

A permanent hair waving device comprising a central tube into one end of which a rod with hair wound thereon is adapted to be inserted which tube is provided, upon its interior at a point a distance from the end into which the said rod is adapted to be inserted, with a collar having an opening therethrough, which 0 ening is flared so that the wider end thereo? has a diameter substantially equal to the interior diameter of the said tube which wider end faces the end of the tube into which the said rod is inserted and the inserted end of the said rod adapted to be projected through the said tapered opening and springs mounted upon the said collar on opposite sides ofthe smaller end of said opening, which springs are adapted toengage the end portion of said rod which is projected throu h said opening, substantially as describerf.

7; A permanent hair waving device comprising a central tube, a hair curler adapted to be inserted into said tube, means stationarily mounted in said tube and adapted to slidably engage the inserted end of said hair curler and retain the same in said tube.
