IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162.42 I dated April 20, 1875; application filed April 13, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE 0. Ross, of Marion, in the county of Marion and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists of a swinging frame, which swings upon a circular v or round post, in combination with two independent sections, both of which move endwise, and the one independent of the other, and both swinging with the gate proper upon its hinges, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.

In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a side view, of my gate, but the parts being in different positions.

In the drawings, A A represent the upper and lower sills, which are connected, at their forward ends, to the vertical bars B B. The sills and bars form a swinging frame, G, and are held together and braced by means of the cross-slats a a. The rear ends of the sillsAA are provided with round holes, through which the post O passes. This forms a hinge or pivot, upon which the frame and gate turn.

E and F represent the two portions of the gate. The upper portion E of this gate rests upon rollers, one of which is placed between the barsB B, and one between the round post 0 and a post which is erected close by its side. The lower section F rests and slides upon the lower sill of the swinging frame. These two sections connect together at both ends by any suitable joint, when necessary, and may be pinned or bolted together, so they will act as one gate, and swing both at one time, as secured together with the gate proper. They may, however, be detached or disconnected from each other, so that the lower section can be moved endwise independent of the upper section, for the purpose of allowing small animalssu,ch as hogs and sheep and goatsto pass under'the upper section, while it prevents the passage of larger stock. One rail of each of the sections projects forward and enters in a suitable recess in the front gate-post D, where it may be provided with any suitable latch for retaining it in position.

In the use of this gate for ordinary farm purposes, such as the transit from one place to another, the two sections E and F are held together, and may either slide back half of their length, and then swing around the post 0, or may swing at once, and as soon as freed from post D upon post 0, as a center or pivot.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The swinging and sliding gate E, with the independently-sliding section F, in combination with the swinging frame G, hinged upon the hollow posts O, all substantially as set forth.
