Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIE.
FRANCIS A. PHILLIPPI, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES F. GLASE AND SIMON H. FOREMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,415, dated April 20, 1875; application filed February 15,1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, F. A. PHILLIPPI, of Reading, in the county of Berks and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife-Oleancrs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a knife-cleaner, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a perspective view of my invention, the box being broken open to show the interior thereof.
A represents a box of any suitable dimensions, having a slot or opening, a, at the front end. Within this end of the box are placed the two rubbers, between which the knives are cleaned. Each rubber B consists of a piece of thick rubber belting or other suitable material, held in a flanged sheet-metal former, C, bent nearly in V or U shape. The edges of these forms are bent up, forming flanges, in
which the edges of the rubbers are inserted, and held simply by punching or otherwise forming indentations in the flanges, as shown. One of the forms (J is made fast in the box, while the other is actuated by means of a spring, D, and connected to the box by a plate, E. On' top of the box, at or near the opposite end, is an aperture, closed by a screwcap, G, or other suitable device.
The cleaning-powder is placed in the box, which is then closed. The knife to be cleaned is first wet by dipping in water or otherwise, and then passed through the opening a in between the rubbers, and cleaned in the usual way.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the box A, with opening a, flanged forms C G,with rubbers B B, spring or springs D, and plate E, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of January, 1875.
' F. A. PHIDLIPPI.
