IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,41 1, dated April 20, 1875 application filed April 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THoMAs W. OWENS, of Granville, in the county of Licking and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Connections; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to farm-fences, in which removable panels or rails are sustained by posts having uprights, inclined braces, and sill-pieces and the improvementis in the construction of the posts, as will be hereinafter set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the fencepanel and post forming the gate. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fence-post.

The main fence-posts are each formed of a sill,A,with two parallel uprights, B B, placed a suitable distance apart, and connected at their upper ends by a cap-piece, O. The uprights are held firmly by means of two inclined braces, D D, extending from the ends of the sill to the uprights. The upper ends of the braces are cut, as shown in Fig. 2, so that a portion of this brace at a will rest against the side of the upright, and the remaining portion 1) will be let into the upright, thus forming a firm and solid joint between the braces and uprights; and these joints are covered on both sides with cap-pieces O 0, all the parts being firmly nailed together. The panels forming the fence may be made of rails, boards, or otherwise, as desired; but the panel which is designed to form the gate is madeof a series of horizontal boards, E,

connected by a center upright batten, G, and two end battens, G G The inner end batten G is at the extreme ends of the horizontal boards E, while the outer end batten Gr is a short distance inward from the extreme ends. The part of this panel between the battens G and G is strengthened by means of a diagonal brace, G The post on which this swinging panel is to work is constructed in the same manner as described for the other fence-posts, except that it has a third upright, B, attached to the opposite side of the sill A, and the brace D at that end of the post is united to said additional upright, as shown in Fig. l, and one of the cap-pieces O is extended to connect with this upright. The swinging panel slides between the upright B and the adjoining upright B between the battens G and G the other end of the panel resting, when the gate is closed, on the sill of the post at the other end, where a latch may be ar-' ranged in any suitable manner to hold it in place. 'VVhen the swinging panel is to be opened, it is slid back till the center batten G stops its movement, when it may be swung around at right angles, the entire panel then resting longitudinally on the sill A. The swinging panel thus arranged is easily operated, and can be opened and closed by anybody, as reqnired.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with the sill A, parallel uprights B B, and cap-pieces O, of the braces D I), fastened to the sill and let into the uprights, so as to form the two bearings a 1), substantially as herein set forth.

2. The post formed of the parts A, B, D, and O, and the auxiliary upright B, placed on the opposite side of the sill A, in combination with the panels formed of the horizontal boards E, and battens GG G and arranged to slide and turn in the post, substantially as herein set forth.
