This invention BLOWER FOR SAWS.
Application filed. May 5, 1926. Serial No. 106,911.
relates to blowers for cut ting tools such as saws.
The principal object tion is the provi capable of being of the present invension of a blowing device attached to a saw for removing the .sawdust from the lines or marks to be worked to w man to change f1 ithout requiring the workom a chosen or necessary position in operating the saw and whichcan be. operated by the thumb of the hand in a manner which wi of the saw 11 not affect the gripping handle required for the .skillful manipulation of the saw in the cutting operat1on, therefore enabling the workman to perform work easier in much less time and more efficiently.
Another object of the invention is the production of a blowing device capable of being removably attached to venient place on the handle,
of adjustment by a saw in aconhaving features which the puff or blast of air created by the manipulation of the device may be readily changed so as to suit the convenience of the workmen; the device having structural features which permits the same to be easily transferred from one saw to another, and capable of being reassembled for right hand use or left use.
With the foregomga easily hand other objects of the invention will appear from the embodiment of the invention which by way of example is described in the following specification and illustrated in ings, in which the accompanying draw- Figure 1 1s a perspectiveview showing the device of-the present invention in place on the handle of a saw, part 011', and the appli ofwhich is broken cation of the device being for right hand use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the device itself.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
Fig. 4 is a sectional View taken on the line 1-4 of Fig. 2 and indicated by the arrows.
In the illustrat looking in the direction ed embodiment of the invention there shown a hand saw 10 having a handle 11 to which the blowing device of the present invention is attached for right hand use by a w orkman for removing the sawdust from the lines or marks to be .7 7 Worked to so that carried out easily cutting operations may be and accurately without re 1 the cylinder includes quiring cessation of the reciprocation of the saw, and without requiring the workman to change from a chosen or necessary position.
The device, generally stated, consists of an air cylinder or tube 12,'attaching means 13 for supporting and for adjustably and detachably connecting the cylinder 12 to the handle 11, means 14: for effecting and for maintaining the adjustment of the cylinder 12 with respectto the attaching means 13, and means 15 which operates in conjunction with the cylinder 12 for creating a puff or blast of air.
More specifically stated, the invention consists of the structural features and operates in a mannerpresently to be described. The attaching means 13 consists of a plate 16 having an angularly disposed member 17 having a slot 18 thereinwhich opens out through its side edge-as at 19, for the accommodation of a clamping element 20 which is secured to the top of the handle 11. The clamping element consists of a screw 21 which extends upwardly through the slot 18, and a nut 22 on the screw 21 for 1 arm 23 carried by the cylinder, an element 24 adapted to be received in an opening in I the end of the arm 23, and which element is also. adapted to be screwed 'into a threaded hole in the plate 16 as at 25, to thus permit 12 to be swung from one position to another. The cylinder 12is held in its difierent positions of adjustment by vir= tue of the series of holes 26 in the plate 16 which are arranged in an arc of a circle described from the point. of pivotal connection of the. arm, and a headed element 27 carried by the arm which is adapted to enter any one ofthe holes 26 by flexing the arms 23 and then swinging the cylinder 12 and its arm 23 to a position in which the head of the element 27 will register with one of the holes 26. i
The means 15 which operates in conjunction with the cylinder 12 for creating a puff or blastof air, in the present instance a head member 2-8 secured in one end of the cylinder 12, the said member having a passage 29 therein. The head member 28 is provided with a nipple 30 which accommodates a nozzle 31 whose passage 32 is in line with the passage 29. A head member 33 is arranged in the opposite end of the cylinder 12 and is detachably secured therein by virtue of screws 34. The head -member 33 is provided with a central bore 35 which extends through a gland 36 formed on the head member 33. A plunger 37 of any suitable construct-ion is arranged for movement in the cylinder 12. The plunger in the present instance consists of a part 38 and a part 89 between which is arranged a gasket or leather disk 40. A rod 41 is connected to the parts 38 and 39 so that the plunger will be arranged at one end of the rod 41, and its opposite end extends through the bore 85 in the head member 33. The free endof the rod 41 is provided with an eye 42 to which is connected a flexible element 43, the said flexible element being also connected to a lever 44 as at 45. The pivot 46 of the lever includes a member 47 threaded on a stud 48 carried by the plate 16; the lever having an eye 49 which encircles the stud 48. The lever is of irregular shape and is provided with a thumb piece 50 for conveniently manipulating the same. The flexible element 43 is passed over a small grooved roller 51 mounted on an arbor 52 detachably carried by the plate 16. Two of these arbors 52 are provided and each serves as a'spacer for securing a cover 53 in place, the same beingheld in place by screws 54 which are screwed into bores respectively in the ends of the arbors 52. By providing two arbors 52 it is possible to reverse the arrangement of the parts so that the device will be adapted for left hand use. In this connection it is also to be noted that there are two sets of holes 26 and an additional threaded hole 55 arranged with respect thereto for swingingly'mounting the cylinder 12.
The lever 44, flexible element 43 and rod 41 serve as a means for retracting the plunger 37 tor'the purpose of taking air into the cylinder between the plunger and'the' head member 28. In order to eject'the air taken into the cylinder rapidly so as to create a pull or blast of air there is provided in conj uction with the nozzle 31, a coil's'pring 56 which is arranged between the head member 33 and the part 39' of the plungenjas shown most clearly 111 Fig. 2. The COll spring 56 functions after the plunger 37 has been retracted in the manipulation of the thumb piece 50, immediately upon the release of the thumb piece to force the air out of the cylinder through the nozzle 31 in the form of a pull or blast of air.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that there has been described a device which 'will'be' thoroughly elficient and efiectual for reciprocation of the saw and without requiring the workman to change a chosen.
position which would interfere with the proper execution of the work in hand; that the blower has features of adjustment by virtue of which the blast of air may be directed in any desired direction and in which the air cylinder will be disposed so as not to interfere with the vision of the workman; and that the device has features of construction permitting the parts to be reassembled so that it may be used in connection with a saw tor left hand use, and which may be readily detached so that the saw may be used without the device.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
