Application filed April 8,
My invention relates to improvements in I proteciive window constructions for bank tellers and the like and has for its primary object to provide a relatively simple device of this character which will ventional including 15 other objects and advantages which will be following de-. 'lhe val-mus fea ures of.
developed in the courselof the scriptive matter. novelty are pointed in the claims annexed c drawings, I Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section and partly broken illustrating a window emodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a section'on the line 22 of Figure 3. is a view similar to Fig. 2 but illustrating the screen sections in effective position I x I I igu're 4 is a detailed sectional view of a latch actuating weight and sponsive releasing device therefor; I Figure 5 is a sectional detail of the latch in (holding engagement with a screen section, an
Figure 6 is of th tions.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein, like reference characters designate similar parts in allviews, numeral 1-,indicates the cashiers window w with a counter 2, the lower beneath the counter being provided with a )ullet resisting screen 3.
he win ow jambs are grooves 4 in which are desi creen sections 5. Each of t ions is of S-shaped formation, ad is formed with hooks 5". actions 5 has its upper reverted hook end perspective a fragmentary t e screensece upper end of one of ed to slide e screen secthat is, each .as clearly shown in cash next win an electro-rehich is pro vided' through the 'jambs or sides. I frame b provided with engaging latch One of the th 1926. Serial No. 100,741.
fixed to the upper window frame as indicated at 6. The other screen sections 5 are mounted to slide in theframe groove 4, and Fig. 3, the upper and interengage as the Screens a protective barrier for the or as shown in Fig. 3, the sections 5 differs from its lower hooks 5? descend to for ier. The outermost, ower of the'slide designed to engage in a slot 7 in the counter 2. There is also provided on the counter a spring latch 8, the nose of which is designed to engage a lug Oprojecting'from c said outer screen section. 5.
illustrates which the slide sections 5 are the manner in held in a nested y pos tion in the upper ends of the grooves 4.
d from an inspection of this figure that each slide section has a latly projecting tongue 5", which frictiona y en ages the lower curved end of the a jacent section to yieldingly hold it There is provided in the as shown in Fig. 1 and also pivoted latch 10 whose upper end e tongue 5 of the against descent. dow jambs, in Fig. 5, a engages th tion 5. r
The latches 10 are maintained in effective )osition by meansof coil springs 11, carried y a cross member 12 as shown in Fig. 5. is seen that each jamb is out with a slot 3 to receive a latch 10. T e means for releasing the latches 10 comprehends an elecs located venient operation by the cashier.
The end of the solenoid plunger 14" jects through the casing or housing to engage" thelateral end 15 of a rod 15 which 1s astened, in any desired manner to a weight 16 located for sliding linder 17; The said cylinder 17 is ated to the counter by means of abracket herwise as may be found expedient. To t e weight 16 are fastened the ends of chains 17, which ass upwardly in the cyllnder and latera y over pulleys 18 and of the window a c tac 17 with the slots he ends of members 10. It is evident at upon enell'lgigation of the solenoid 14 the weight 16 ,wi e released and the latches movement in e lows in that its lower end is straight and oufermost secpro- screen section,
'21, .shown 1n presence of my pulled outwardly to allow the screen sections 5 to descend into the position shown in Fig. 3. To accelerate the movement of the weight. 16, whereby to more quickly release the latches 10, I have provided a coil spring Fig. 4, which bears upon the weight and against a circumferential flange at the upper end of cylinder 16. At either, side of the lower edge of the outermost 5 there is secured a chain 22 which. is concealed in the jamb and has its lower end secured to a weight 23 working in a guide column 24'." Each guide column 24.- has an apertured closure cap 25 through which the chain passes. us it will be apparent thatthe weights 2?; assure the immediate actuation of the sections 5 to the position shown in ig. ,3, when the latches 10 have been released. The movement of the weights 23 is augmented by the coil springs 26 engaging the weights and the closure caps 25.
From the foregoing it will be evident that the cashiers window will present the usual appearance and will in no Way suggest the improved protective screen. The engagement of the lower end of the outermost screen section 5 in the counter slot 7 and the engagement of the lug 9 by the latch 8 prevents an intruder from forcing the screen open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and deslre to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the character described comprising a frame, a closure carried thereby and consisting of a plurality of independent sections slidabl mounted in sai frame and having inter ocking portions, a latch normally holding said closure in open position, flexible members connected to one of the. closure sections adjacent the ends thereof, said flexible members having their lower ends provided with evenly balanced weights, separate barrels receiving said weights and portions of said flexible members, and sprin s in said barrels and adapted to urge sai weights downwardly upbon the release of said latch whereby to form ly advance said closure to its closed position. 2. A device of the character describe comprising a frame, a closure carried thereby and consisting of a plurality of indeendent sections slidably mounted in sai rame and having interlocking portions, latches carried by the opposite sides of said frame and normally holding said closure in an open position, flexible members connected to said latches and having their lower ends connected to a weight, a barrel receiving said weight, a plunger adjacent said barrel, means carried by said weight and engageable with said plunger for normally maintaining said weight in an elevated position, a spring in said barrel and urgin sai weight downwardly upon the release 0 said plunger from engagement with said weight carried means to retract said latches, flexible members connected to one of the closure sections adjacent the ends thereof, said second-name flexible members having their lower ends provided with evenly balanced weights, separate'barrels receiving said wei hts an ortions of said second-named flexi 1e memrs, and springs in said barrels and urging said weights downwardly upon the release of said latches whereby to forcibly advance said closure to its closed position.
(1 In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
