Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON CHASE `AND ALONZO W. CRAM, OF HAVEBHILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VESSELS FOR INFLAMMABLE LIQUIDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,350, dated April 20, 1875; application filed January 30, 1875. 1*'
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, MILTON CHASE and ALONZO W. CRAM, both of Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Vessels for Indammable Liquids, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters ot' reference marked thereon, making part of this specilication, in which is represented a vertical sectional View of our improved vessel.
The object of our invention is to provide a vessel or can for inflammable liquids or mate rials, and in which all danger of their explosion, in consequence of a building or apartment burning` in which they are stored, is securely guarded against.
Our present invention is an improvement on the invention embraced in, and covered by, Letters .Patent of the United States issued to u's August Ai, 1874, No. 153,702.
The nature of ourinvention consists in providing the vessel, and which is coated or incased in a coveringv of some suitable non-conducting material, with a safety-valve and spring-laucet.
The construction and operation of our invention are as follows: B is the vessel, and may be of' any desired form, and constructed of any suitable material. This vessel B is coated or inca-sed in some suitable non-conducting material, D, so as to render the same, as it were,
hre-proof. This lire-proof coating D may be permanently attached to the outer wall ot' the vessel B, or so secured as to be detachable, and may be protected by an outer jacket, constructed of iron or other suitable material. A is the pressure safety-valve, and is arranged at the upper section ofthe vessel B, as clearly shown in the drawing, and which is designed to relieve the vessel from any over or undue the spring shall automatically close the faucet and hold the same in a closed position.
From the foregoing' full and detailed description the operation of our improvement will readily be understood.
WVhat We claim, and ask Letters Patent of the United States for, is-
-1. The combination of the vessel B, having the detachable covering D, composed of a non conducting materia-1, and the safety-valve A, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination ofthe vessel B, having the detachable covering D, composed of a nonconducting material, the safety-valve A, and spring-faucet C, the whole being constructed and arranged substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
3. A carrier for transporting inflammable liquids, consisting ot the vessel B, having a coating, D, ot' some suitable non-oonducting material, wire-gauze shield F, safety-valve A,
and spring-faucet C, the whole being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereotl We have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
