,LUGGAGE CARRIER. f r y Application-inedita@ a2, 192e. seriali No. 11?;709.' y
VMy invention' is a'luggage carrier forfauto`v lmobiles which` may be utilized. asv a benchI l of they seat construction-` End bracebars 2 1 or a swing. i v
An objectoffmy invention is the construction of a luggage carrier which may be attached to the'. running board of an automobile .and be of a fol-dable type7 having legs vattached thereto which may be folded when used as a luggage carrier and unfolded to change the luggage carrier into a bench.
A further objectV of my invention is to have a back for the bench which may be folded against theseat `portion when forming the luggage carrier, the arm rest of the bench forming thefront and rear ends of the luggage carrier. l
My invention will be more readily understood from the following description and drawings, in which; y p
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an automobile with my combined luggage car-` rier and bench attached thereto;
. Fig. 2 is a Vertical transverse section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 in the direction of the arrows; l
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the structure when utilized as a bench; l Fig. 4 is a front elevation partly brokenaway of the bench structure as if taken in the direction of the arrow dof Fig. 5;
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the bench as if taken in .the direction of the arrow 5 of Fig. 4. v
In the construction .shown the automobile yis indicated as provided with a running board indicated by the numeral 1 and having front and backV fenders 2 and 3. A- pair of clamps 4 having upper and lower jaws 5 and 6 and a screw 7 secure upright bars 8 to the running board. These bars engage in straps 9 secured to the bottom of the` slatted seat construction 10 of the combine-d luggage carrier and bench.
This seat construction is formed with cross pieces 11 to which are secured the longitudinal slats 12. Legs 13 and 111 are securedl and retain the legs in the folded position as shown in Fig. 1. n n c In the unfolded position of the legs, front and back braces 18 and 19 formed of` wire and pivotally connected to thelegsengage eyes: 2O securedfto the front and' lbaclrslats and 22jformed ofwire or vrods also engage the eyes 23 at the ends of certain -of-*tlif'e*slats,v
" thusf trolfdingthe 'legsisecure'ly braced.L v Wfhen these legs are folded the wires or rods have their ends fit into sockets 24 in .the body of the leg construction.
The arm rests 25 29 attached to the back of each of` thearm i rest constructions engages onel or more of are lformed of arm bars` `26. supported on metal brackets 27, these lat,-
the slats 30 of the slatted back construction` i i 31. These slats are secured together by crossV bars 32. The back isjsecured to the seat by luggage carrier adjacent the front and back f fenders 2 vand 3'. If itis desiredto suspend eyes 34 inthe arm bars 26 and a rope 4orthe like may be passedv through these eyes sus`y pending the structure above the ground.
It is obvious that my construction may be considerably changed in forming benches of different shapes or other folding articles of camp furniturev combined with a luggage carrier. Such changes would be within the spirit of my invention asset forth in the description, drawings and claims. y j Having described.myinvention,` what` I claim is: 1. A combined bench and luggage carrier comprising a seat structure having folding legs and a folded back hinged to the seat, bars having means to clamp same to the running board ofan automobile,.and means to secure 'the seat to said bars.
` the bench as aswing I provide a series'of 2. A combined bench and luggage carri-er L as claimed `in claim 1, having arm rests se,- eured to the seat oonstructiomsaid arm rests forming the front and-back ends of the luggage carrier mounted on a running board.
3. A combination luggagel carrier `and bench com prislng .1n combination cross pieces f having seat slats secured thereto, legs pivotally connected tothe l.opposite sidesand oppositeends of said "cross ApiecestoV fold thereagainst, aback hingedly connected'to the seat, Yarm rests rigidly secured to tlijesleat,V
having vmeans forming a stop. construction to retain theback in the desired position when vusedf'as a bench, lclamps .having upflight ybarshsecured thereto adapted to be 'f attached yto ajrunningfboard of an automo- "bile, andlmeans Jsecuring theuprighi', bars l toftheseat. f
f p f4; In a combination luggage carrier and bencl1,a plurality of cross pi eoes having slats 'f forming la seat secured thereto, legs pivotally connected to the opposite ends and oppo vsite sides of the cross piecesand adapted to fold thereagainst, lpivoted catch-es secured to the cross pieces to hold the legs infolded position, clamps having,r upright bars,`said .clamps beingadapted to be secured to a Jessi: LEE MCGAUGH, Y,
