UNITED STATES I 1,622,598 PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM MARSHALL, F DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO BRIGGS MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
HINGE SUPPORT.
Application filed September a, 1924. Serial No. 736,643.
This invention relates to vehicle bodies and refers more particularly to supports for door hinges and the like.-
An object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable post or pillar which is 1 preferably formed of channel members of minimum weight that are preferably connected to ether so as to provide a hollow post that is sealed .on all sides.
Another object is to provide a post having a strengthening member that preferably reinforces the securing portion for the hinge.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists ofcertain novel fea- .tures 'of construction, combination and arran ement of. parts as will be more fully descri d and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims. 5
n the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a vehicle body embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 33.of Figure 2;'
' Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the reinforcing member; 7
Figure 5 is a perspective view ofone of the channel members of the post and showing a slightly modified form of reinforcing member;
Figure 6 is a sectional view through the construction shown in Figure 5; r
. Figure 7 is a view similar toFigure 5, but showing another modification;
Figure 8 is a sectional view through the construction shown in Figure 7;
Figure 9 is-a top plan view of the reinforcing menrber shown in Figure 7;
Figure 10 1s a top plan view of the attaching plate shown in Figure 7.
eferring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
a width substantially equal to the width of g with openin the numeral 1 designates a motor vehicle the post 2 and is preferably provided with openings 9 which receive the securing ele ments 10 for one section 11 of each bin e while the other side 12 is preferably rel a tively narrow and is provided with a laterally extending flange 13. The channel 7 is preferably provided with a relatively narrow side 14 that-engages the outer face of the flange 13 and is also preferably provided with a laterally extendingflange 15 that issecured to the narrow side 12 of the channel 6. The base 16 of'the channel 7 is preferably parallel to the relatively wide side 8 of the channel 6 and preferably curves into a relatively wide side 17 which is preferably parallel to the base 18 of the channel 6 and that ispreferably provided with a return-bent flange 19 that receives a flange 20 projecting laterally from the forward edge of the wide side 8 of the channel 6.
The base 16 and outer side 17 of the channel 7 are preferably enameled so as to form an outer panel or ish strip for the vehicle body while a suitable finish strip 21 is preferably secured to the flange 15 and preferably cooperates with the narrow side 14 of the channel 7 to receive a clip 22 holding the resilient channel 23 for the usual sashless glass panel 24 of the door window.
For strengthening the post 3, as well as reinforcing the securing portion for the hinged section 11, I preferably provide an elongated substantiall U-shaped member 25 having upwardly an downwardly extendin flanges 26 that are secured to the narrow side 12 of the channel 6. The base 27 of the U-shaped member engages the wide side 8 of the channel 6 and is preferably provided s 28 that receive the securing elements 10 or the hinged section 11. Suitable nuts 29 are preferably threaded onto the securing elements for retaining the base 27 of the U-shaped member a ainst the side 8 of the channel 6. The para lel sides 30 of the U-shaped member constitute braces between the flanges 26 and the base 27 and cofor the hinged section 36 preferably extend through aligned openings 37 and 38 respectively in the side 39 of the channel member 40 and in the base 31 of the reinforcing member 32 and threadedly'engage the attaching plate 34. If desired suitable nuts (not shown) may be threaded onto the securing elements 35 against the attaching plate 34.
In Figures 7 to inclusive, I have shown still another modification wherein the hinge section 50 preferably engages the inner face 51 of the wide side 52 of the channel member 53 and is embraced by an offset portion 54 of the base 55 of the U-shaped reinforcing member 56. As shown in Figure 8, the base 55 of the reinforcing member is preferably provided at its outer andinner edges with struck-out tongues 57 which correspond to the tongues 33 and are bent over a metal attaching plate 58 to which the securing elements 59 for the hinge section 50 preferably extend.
While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desireto have it understood that do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
\Vhat I claim as my invent-ion is 1. The combination with a post including a channel member, of a reinforcing member for said channel member, an attaching plate on said reinforcing member, tongues on'said reinforcing member holding said attaching plate, a hinge, and means engaging said attaching plate for securing said hinge to said channel member.
2. The combination with a post includinga channel member, of a reinforcing member for the post extending between opposite sides of the channel member, an attaching plate, means on the reinforcing member holding said plate, a hinge, and headed elements engaging said plate for securing the hinge 'to the channel member.v
3. The combination with a post including -a channel-shaped member and a hinge secured to one side wall of said member, of a U-shaped reinforcing member extending transversely of said channel shaped member and having vertical flanges, the base of said U-shaped member being secured to the side wall of the channel adjacent to said hinge, the flanges of said member being secured to the opposite wall of the channel.
4. The combination with a post including a channel-shaped member, of a channelshaped reinforcing member extending transversely of said channel-shaped member aforesaid, an attaching plate between the sides of the channel-shaped reinforcing member, means for securing said plate to the base of said reinforcing member, a hinge, and means engagin said plate for securing said hinge to the shaped member.
5. The combination with a post including a channel-shaped member, and a hinge having a portion extending along one sidewall of said channel member, of reinforcing means for said post including a brace located within the channel of said member in a horizontal plane with said hinge and having portions secured to, the opposed side walls of said channel member, and securing means for the reinforcing member and hinge including elements extending through the first mentioned side Wall aforesaidof said channel member.
6. The combination with a post including a channel-shaped member, and a hinge having a portion extending along one side wall ofsaid channel member, of means for reinforcing said post including a brace extending between two walls of said channel member, and a common securing means for. said hinge and reinforcing member includingelements extending through registering openings in said hinge, reinforcingmember, and the first -mentioned wall aforesaid of said channel member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM MARSHALL.
