UE'FE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP GEORGE JAMES COLBO'URNE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
SPIRIT STOVE.
Application filed July 17, 1926, Serial No. 123 ,216, and in Great Britain November 20, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in spirit stoves, and the object of the invention is to construct a spirit stove adapted for use with either solid or liquid fuel in an inexpensive form, and adapted either for ladies use, for example, the heating of curling tongs, or the like, or for other more domestic uses, such as the boiling of liquid in a kettle or other utensil.
In the accompanying drawings are illustrated preferred forms of the invention, Fig. 1 showing the stove collapsed and packed for storage or transit. Fig. 2 shows the stove opened out to support such devices as ladies curling tongs, and Fig. 3, the stove in use for boiling a kettle.
In a preferred form of the invention a fuel receptacle or container 1 of rectangular shape is formed with a peripheral projecting flange or ridge on its upper face including side flanges :2 and end flanges 3, and associated therewith is a stand 4 provided with legs, or preferably with supports 5 at either end recessed as hereinafter described, the feature of the stand being that its central area is open as at 6, and that its edges on one face are provided as to two sides with overturned flanges 7 adapted to co-operate bya sliding or presson connection with the flanges 2 on the fuel receptacle, and as to its other two edges, on the opposite face of the stand or rest; these may or may not have recessed sections 8 adapted to slide or otherwise connect to the other flanges 3 on the top of the fuel receptacle; these recessed sections may be formed integrally at the corner connecting the top at and the supports 5 of the stand.
It will thus be noted that when the stand or rest is required to be used, it may he slid on by means of the overturned flanges 7 on one face which leave the legs or recessed ends 5 upstanding to support curling tongs or the like above the frame, and when the use of the stove is finished, it is either slid over same by means of its other overturned flanges 8 and the flanges 3 on the fuel receptacle, or simply reversed and sprung over same, and the whole is thus collected within little more than the volume of the container by itself. A separate lid 9, preferably of the lever lid type, is afterwards fixed inthe lar plate opening 10 of the container, and both closes same and secures the stand in place.
Preferably a receptacle and stand as just mentioned will be provided, with the plate for the stand integrally formed with end supports recessed in a suitable manner, as at 11, to receive curling irons or the. like at a low level, and with corner pieces 12 adapted to form legs at a slightly higher level, these end pieces, however, being so proportioned that when slid on the fuel container in the out of use condition, they only occupy the space provided by the ends of the container in question, and thus make no appreciable addition to the volume occupied for travelling or for other portable conditions.
For the sliding on device above mentioned the rectangular form is best to allow of the two different positions-upstanding-andclosedand preferably the closure of the fuel receptacle may be effected by a rectanguprovided with a depressed rectangular centre 13 adapted to fit a rectangular opening to the fuel stove, this being arranged in the form of a lever lid with the centre closing the container and the lever flanges arranged to pass over the stand when in reversed relation, and keep same in position. The face of the stand may be dished slightl} to facilitate this purpose, and the open centre in the face of the stand will be such as to leave the full opening of the fuel orifice clear when the cover is removed. Dropping the lid .on the opening in the stand puts out the flame after use.
Though mentioned as rectangular, it should be understood that a circular or other fuel orifice with lever lid may be employed, with not quite such satisfactory results, however, when dealing with curling tongs as shown at 14, which require the elongated fuel orifice for the best results, but equally adapted for closure of the fuel opening and for securing the stand at the same time.
The recesses in the supports of the stand for the curling tongs may advantageously comprise a rectangular depression 11 with a circular centre 15 to hold the front ends of the curling tongs.
The means of employing the stand for heating curling tongs is to slide the stand l ll back along its flanges until the handle and the parts not wanted to be heated rest on the stand and the tongs project over the stove. It not required for heating curling tongs, the stand may be pushed back so as wholly to cover the stove receptacle; in this position of the stand a kettle such 16 can be supported and the contents boiled.
In a slightly more expensive form hinged supports 17 may be added to the stand to uphold the overhanging end when thus used, but a main intention of the invention is preferably to have the stand stamped integrally out of one sheet, the lid out of a second sheet, and the fuel receptacle out 0t not more than two pieces. fixed together without soldering, say, by the known method of turning over the edges of adjo ning sheets to form ridge or flange; this construction, when carefully done, mal s a liquid-tight joint, and results in a very lIlQXPGIltrllVL stove. The free ends of the support 1? may be pressed out as at 18, so that they are interlocking, thereby providing means for holding them up out of use.
The hinged supports mentioned may on occasion be upturned from the stand when in closed relation to the stove, say, when only light articles are required to be heated, the lever lid being removed and the supports simply upturned from the stand without removing the latter. To allow ot the hinge, the connection of the stand in closed position may be achieved by a press-on motion over the end ridges of the container. No connection to the ridges is really essential, as the lever lid keeps the stand in place in closed position.
By the use of the invention a portable stove of very limited volume is available for travelling purposes, with substantially the whole of the volume available for fuel supply so that it will last for some considerable time.
