RAIL CLAMP.

My present invention has reference to railway tracl; constructions.
My object is to provide a concrete bed that has embedded therein the headed ends of bolts, the said bolts passing through metal plates upon which the rails rest, and likewise engaging with means for effectively clamping the rails on the plates so that the rails will be held against movement in any direction except a limited longitudinal movement incident to expansion and contraction and further wherebythe portions of the rails between the plates will be afforded the desired and necessary resiliency.
A still further object is the provision of a rail bed, supporting means for rails, and means for effectively clamping the rails on the supporting means, the same clamping and securing means being r employed at the joints between. the rails as well as at the body of the rails.
To the attainment of the above broadly stated objects and many others which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in certain other novel features of construction, combinationV and operative association of parts, a satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the accompanying drawings.

The road bed 1 is of concrete. Anchored in the bed 1 there are the headed ends 2 of 1926. Serial No. 124,039.
bolts 3. kThe bolts are arranged in spaced pairs and the threaded shanks thereof project vertically through the bed 1. ln instances where the bolts are to be arranged in an old bed or to be inserted in a concrete bed when the improvement isemployed in connection with street railways, the bolts instead of being headed are of the expansible type, but in each event the shanks of the bolts project through the top of the bed.
Arranged on the top of the bed at determined spaced intervals there are rail plates 4. The plates 4, adjacent to their ends, and
close to their diagonally opposite corners Y are provided with openings 5 through which the respective pairs of bolts 3 pass. .The plates 3 are formed on the upper faces thereof with transversely arranged flanges (3.`
These fianges are cut-away for a suitable distance from the sides of the respective pairs of openings 5. The fianges 6 are designed for contacting engagement with the base flanges of rails 7 which rest on the plates 4.
The rail clamps are indicated by the numerals 8 and are all of a similar construction. Each rail clamp includes a flat body portion that is provided with a pair of spaced elongated openings 9 and with anupstanding angle portion that provides a rail engaging lip 10. The Shanks of the bolts 3 are designed to be passed through the openings 9. lOf course, the shanks 3 of the bolts are round in cross sectionl and in order to lill the space between the bolts and one of the rounded end walls provided by each of the openings 9, I provide depending lugs 10 on washer members 11. The washer members are disposed over the clamping plates and are engaged by the nuts 12 that are screwed on the bolts 3. The lugs 10 have their inner ends in a line with the central round opening through the bolts and therefore these ends are concaved, as at 13, while the outer ends of the lugs are rounded, as at 14 for snug engagement with the rounded end walls provided by the openings 9.
When plates 15 connect the confronting ends of two of the rails 7, the clamping plates are arranged as disclosed by Figure 4 of the drawings, that is, the pairs of bolts 3 are disposed to contact with the rounded walls provided by the openings 9 nearest the lip 10 of the clamp 8 and the washers are reversely arranged so that the lugs 10 Will contact with the outer surfaces of the bolts, and with the outer roundedv Walls provided by the said openings 9.
The simplicity and advantages of my construction will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention relates when the foregoing description is read in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings. It Will be apparent that with my improvement the lrails are effectively clamped on the bed, the said rails at the portions thereof between the rail plates are alibi-ded the necessary resiliency and the bolts may be anchored in new road beds or in concrete road beds 1vhich have been already constructed. Because of the vast use of lumber Wooden `ties are expensive and are hard to procure, and it will be noted that my improvement dispenses with the einployment of such tics. Y
