WILLIAM R. TATE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSG-NOR- TO TATE SAFETY WINDOW SCAFFOLD CORPORATION, A OORFORATION F NEW' YORK. y
WINDOW-WASHERS SCAFFOLD.
Application filed March 27, i925.
This invention relates to scaii'old's, and has for one of its objects the provision of a de vice of this character which shall be especially adapted for use by WindenT Washers, which shall be adapted to be readily secured in posit-ion for use, and which shall be adapted to be c-onipactly folded for storage or transportation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a scaffold of the character stated which shall be simple and exceptionally strong and durable, and which shall be inexpensive to manufacture.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction, combination and arrangen'ient of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a 'view in side elevation of the s ntlold in position for use.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the scaffold in position for use.
Figure 8 'is a sectional View taken on the plane indicated by the line 3e-3 of Figure E2.
Figure Il is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 4.-4 of Figure l.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure l.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 6 6 of Figure '1.
Figure 7 is a bottoni plan view of the scaffold in folded condition.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken on the i. plane indicated by the line 8-8 of Figure 7.
' reference characters.
In the drawings, l indicates the Wall, Q. the Window sill, and 3 the Window frame of a residence, office building or the like.
The scaffold comprises a platform 4 Which embodies a base frame 5, spacing` bars 6 positioned upon and secured to the lateral sides of the base frame, and floor strips `7 positioned upon and secured to the spacing strips 6. The frame 5 is of rectangular formation Serial No. 18,811.
and is preferably made of angle iron. The platform 4f is provided with a guard which consists of uprights 8 having their lower ends ren'iovably positioned in sockets 9 in the outer corners of the platform, an outer hori zontal rail l0, and side horizontal rails ll. The uprights 8 and rails 10 and 1l are preferably made of metal and the rails 10 and 1l are secured to the upper ends of the u'prights 8 by Couplings l2.
bracket l Which is also preferably made of angle iron and which is pivoted by rivets or bolts l5 to the lateral sides of the base freine 5 at points outwardly beyond the inner side of this fraine comprises a horizontal nieniber l5 vertical members lo and down- Wardly and inwardly inclined brace 1nembers 17. rEhe brace members 17 extend downwardly from the upper ends of the side mein bers lG and are secured at their lower ends to the horizontal member l5 by rivets 18. The bracket i3 is al one-piece structure. lt entends transversely of the platform fl, and is adapted to Contact with the outer side of the Window sill 9. when the satl'old is in position for use. Blocks 19 which are secured to the inner side of the bracket 13 at the lower corners thereof engage the outer side `of the wall l` in order to obviate any tendency of the bracket to rock'inwardly when the scaffold is in position for use and. a `Workman is standing upon the platform fl.
A clamp member 20 is adjustably secured to the platform 4l by bars 2l which are slidably mounted upon the platform between the base frame 5 and the Hoor strips 7. The bars 21 are provided with openings 22 and the floor strips 7 are provided With openings 23. Fins Ql which pass through the openings 23 of certain 'of the floor strips 7 and through the openings 22 in the bars 2l, secure the clamp member 2O in adjusted position. rFhe adjustment of the clamp member 2O is in the direction of and away from the bracket 13 in order to adapt the scaffold for use on buildings having Walls of different thicknesses. The clamp member 2O is connected to and depends from the inner ends 0f the bars 2l. This connectionis established by hinges 25 which are so arranged. that clamp member 20 may only be moved in the direction of the bars 2l. `When the scaffold is in position for use, the clamp member 2O contacts with the inner side of the Window sill 2. Padded blocks 2G are secured to the lower corners of the clamp member 2O for Contact with the inner side of the Wall 1, and prevents the clamp member from having any rocking movement on the Window sill 2. The clamp member 2O is of rectangular formation, and is preferably made of angle iron. It is a one-piece structure and is provided With cross braces 2T.
As the bracket 13 is pivoted to the plat form l, as the struts 28 are pivoted to the platform and detachably connected to the bracket, as the bars 21 are slidably connected to the platform, and as the clamp member 2O is hinged to the bars, these parts may be compactly folded in the manner shown in Figures 7 and 8. Due to the fact that the struts 28 support the outer side of the platform Ll, and due to the manner in which the bracket 13 and clamp member 20 engage opposite sides of the Wall 1 and Window sill 2, the scaffold is positively held against casual movement While in applied position.
lt should be understood that the drawings are merely illustrative and do not pretend' to give exact proportions. Furthermore, the said drawings are illustrative of a preferred construction, it being my expectation that various changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spi 1it and scope of my invention.
Wl hat is claimed is z- 1. A scaffold comprising a platform, a bracket pivoted to the platform for folding against the same and normally depending from the platform, said bracket having an outwardly directed flange, struts pivoted to the platform and detachably connected to the flange on the bracket for folding against the latter, bars connected to the platform, and a clamp member on the same side of the scaffold as the bracket pivoted to the bars and foldable against them.
2. A scaffold comprising a. platform provided With depending lugs at the outer corners thereof, a bracket pivoted to the platform adjacent the inner side thereof and depending therefrom and having an angle iron base, struts pivoted at their upper ends to said lugs and having their lower ends resting upon the said base, a clamp member to coact with said bracket, and means connecting the chimp member to the platform on the same side thereof as the bracket.
S. A scaffold comprising a platform, means to secure the same to a support including a bracket pivoted thereto for folding against the platform an outwardly directed flange on the bracket, struts longer than the bracket engageable with said flange to maintain the bracket in contact With a support, and means pivoting said struts to the platform in offset relation to the bracket in the folded position of the latter whereby the struts may be folded over the bracket in the collapsed form of the scaffold.
ln testimony whereof I my signatur-e.
