DUMP CAR.
Application filed September This invention relates to railway dump cars, and more particularly to that type of dump car having a tilting body and has for an object the provision of a hinge for the body of such car which will permit a maxi mum tipping of the body and at the same time will cause the body to move to the side a suflicientdistamce to dump lading carried by the car free of the railroad track rails.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge for the tilting body of a railway car which will permit the free tilting and sidewise movement of the body but which will not become accidentally disconnected.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hinge for the tilting body of a railway dump car which is simple in construction easy to assemble and disassemble and yet will not become accidentally separated.
These and other objects will be apparent from the following description.
Referring to the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, Fig. 1 is a cross sectional View of a railway dump car embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view. of a portion of the car showing the invention; Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of a portion of the car, showing the invention applied thereto and Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the same taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the underframe of the car and 2 the car body which body is mounted on the underframe in such a manner that it can be tilted to one side or the other to discharge the lading carried thereby. The underframe and body may be of any suitable construction and are connected together through the medium of hinges 3 which hinges permit the body to tilt and move bodily toward one side or the other.
Each of the hinges 3 comprises a part 4 which is secured to the underframe and a part 5 which is secured to the car body. from the underframe and the upper outer surface thereof is provided with a centrally arranged depression 6. At each end this part is provided with an outwardly projecting portion 7 having a curved bearing surface.

8 at its lower end and outwardly curved bearing surfaces 9 extending upwardly therefrom and terminating in notched or bearing surfaces 10 the purpose of which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The part 5 depends downwardly from the body of the car and is provided with spaced lower portions 11 having inwardly extending lugs 12 adjacent their lower ends. Some distance above these lugs 12 a web 13 is provided which extends between the spaced portions 11 and at its sides 14 is curved downwardly to correspond with the shape of a curved surface 15 of the part 4. Below the web 13 a pin 16 is rovided which extends between and through the spaced portions and is adapted to seat in the depression 6 in the part 4. The lugs 12 on the spaced portions 11 are adapted to engage the bearing surfaces 8, 9 and 10 of the part 4 when the body of the car-is operated.
lVhen the car body is in its righted or normal position the pin 16 of the part 5 is seated in the depression 6 of the part 4 and the lugs 12 of the part 5 are in engagement with the curved bearing surfaces 8 of the part 4 and this pin supports the body and any weight carried thereby.
Assuming the car body being tipped or moved to one side toward discharging position from its righted or normal position, the pin 16 of the part 5 forms an axis around which the body rotates until such time as one of the curved surfaces 15 of the part 4 is engaged by one of the curved surfaces 14 of the part 5. When these surfaces engage, the lugs 12 on the part 5 will have moved from the bearing surface 8 of the part 4 to the curved bearingsurface 9 of this part and the weight of the body will have been transferred from the pin 16 to the parts 4 and 5 directly and a continued movement of the car body will cause the body and pin 16 to be elevated to some extent and moved portionoffthe part E4; will prevent? the. body from movinglaterally free of the underframe. Having thus described the invention, What we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters :Patent is 1.
