PRESSER MEMBER FCR FLL'ER MACHINES.
Application led June 19,
This invention relates to a presser member for the lier `frameot1 roving machine; and has for its object to construct ia presser member' so that its etective weight may be varied to bal-ance the fiier :trame to which it is attached and prevent vibration thereof during rapid rotation.
A further object ot the invention is to pro vide a presser member that is adapted to carry a weight which may be varied to adjust its effective weight.
A still further object of the invention is to provide the presser member with a hollowshank in which is lodged weighting means variable to adjust the effective weight of the presser member.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation illustrating a lier frame with the improved presser mem ber attached thereto and the yarn package is illustrated in dotted lines in the relative position which it assumes on the roving machine.
Figure 2 is a partial sectional side elevation of the presser showing a hollow shank with a weight therein.
Figure 3 is a sectional plan view of the foot portion of the presser taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a ragmental side elevation partly in section of the presser member showing weighting means of a dierent form in the hollow shank.
It is found in practice that new flier frames and their presser members are of such weight that the presser which is attached to one of the legs of the flier frame, compensates for the weight of the opposite heavier leg of the flier so as to balance the flier during its rapid rotation about the yarn package. However, when repair is needed or a new presser member is required, it is found very difficult to so force the presser member and nish the same as to perfectly balance the iiier thus causing vibration and excessive wear to the iiier and spindle and making an undesirable noise in the operation of the roving machine. l-leretotore, the presser' members have been made solid but in order to provide a structure which may be easily varied in weight, I have found it 1926. Serial No. 117,189.
desirable to make the shank-fot the presser member hollow and to place in; this hollowv shank a weight in suiiicient quantity to balance the fler` traine and prevent excessive vibration ot the same; and the following is :a detailed kdescription of the present fembodiment of this invention for obtaining these advantageous results:-
VVith reference to the drawings, 10 designates a yarn package which is illustrated in dotted lines, on the spindle of which is mount-ed the usual inverted U-shaped flier frame 11 having a solid leg- 12, a hollow .leg 13 through which the yarn 14 is led from the .draft rolls (not shown). l On this hollow leg 13 of the iier there 1s mounted a presser member comprising a shank portion 15 having a toot 16 with an eye 17 through which the yarn 14 is guided onto the yarn package, it being understood that the flier frame with the presser member revolves several hundred revolutions a minute and at the same time has a longitudinal or np-and-down movement relative to the package for suitably guiding the yarn thereon.
From each end of the shank, arms 21 and 22 extend to be bent about and embrace the leg 13 of the flier frame to secure the presser member thereto.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a presser member the e'ective Weight of which may be varied within reasonable limits to accurately balance the flier during its rapid rotation and thus eliminate the vibration caused from an unevenly balanced flier trame, it beingunderstood that large numbers of these fliers are in operation on a roving machine and then any vibration is many times multiplied.
The foregoing description is directed( solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention beingdened and limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
l; A presser member for a fiier frame comprising a hollow shank, a foot portion attached thereto, Weighting means in said hollow shank adapted to be varied to regulate the effective weight of the presser, and means for attaching said presser member to a flier frame. e
2. In combination with a Hier frame, a presser member having a hollow shank attached to one of 'the legs thereof, a foot at the end of said shank having means for guiding the yarn, and weighting means in said hollow shank adapted to be varied to adjust the weight of said member to balance the iiier frame.
3. In combination with a flier frame, a presser member having a hollow shank, arms adjacent each end thereof embracing said flier frame, a presser foot attached to said shank having a yarn guiding opening, and a weight in said hollow shank sufcient to balance the flier frame and prevent vibration thereof while rotating.
4L. A presser member for a flier frame comprising a hollow shank, a foot portion attached thereto, weighting means in said hollow shank adapted to be varied to regulate the effective weight of the presser, a plug for closing the end of said hollow shank, and means for attaching said presser member to a flier frame.
In testimony whereof I aIiX my signature.
WILLIAM J. MAHER.
