IMPROVEMENT IN CLAMPING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 162,150, dated April 20, 1875; application tiled October 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JAMES R. MAXWELL, ofHamilton,Butlercounty,Ohio, and CHARLES A.SCOTT,ofGincinnati, Hamilton county,Ohio, have invented an Improved Clamping Device, of which the following is a specification:
The object of our invention is to make a powerful clamping device, and at the same time a portable or hand machine. This machine is intended more especially for putting on roofing, known as Scotts patent roofing, for which a patent was granted to O. A. Scott by the United States on the 20th day of January, 1874, No. 146,155, although we do not confine ourselves to Scotts roofing, as our device may be used in many other ways.
In the drawings illustrating our invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation Figs. 2 and 3 are elevations of tools used in putting on roofing in connection with the clamping device.
Fig. 1 snows the construction of the clamping device. a is the main body, to which all the rest of the parts are fastened. b is the vibrating arm, to which is fastened the lever d and the vibrating links 0 e e are the setscrews, which we use to countersink, one of which is concave and the other convex. The \/-shaped guide, shown in dotted lines, is used only when putting on roofing.
l/Vhen the machine is combined, as shown in Fig. 1, its operation will be as follows By the movement of the lever d upward, the link 0, acting as the fulcrum, will rise and throw the vibrating jaw 12 open. By pushing the lever d down the jaw 12 will be closed, the vibrating links 0 advancing downward so as to almost bring the three centers in line, thus giving out a powerful movement by reason of the compounding of the levers.
We claim as our invention .1. The improved clamping device herein described, consisting of frame a, carrying a jaw, g, the lever b, carrying a jaw, lb, and pivoted at f to the frame a, the lever d, and link 0, all combined and operated substantially as set forth.
2. The improved clamping device herein described, consisting of the frame a, link 0, levers d and b, and jaws g and h, in combination with the counter-sinking devices 0 e, as and for the purpose set forth.
