WATEBIPROOF VESTPOCKET SUN WATCH.
Application filed. February 12, 192%.
This invention relates to time indicating devices of the .sundial type, the invention having more particular reference to a small port-able device of this type which may be readily carried arounth and which I may term a sun watch. provision being made for the use of the one device in different latitudes and longitudes.
The invention has for an object the provision of a simple and novel device of this sort a further specific object relating'to the provision of means for adjustment to permit of the device being used in different parts of the country.
For further comprehension of the invention. and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, .and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Fig. 1 of the drawing is a face View showing my improved instrument, with the cover omitted.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and showing the cover in place and open.
Fig. 3 is a detail fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the element on which the style is mounted.
Fig. 5 is a face view showing the card used to indicate the adjustment of the compass.
In constructing my improved instrument I provide a shallow casing 10 which may be of the rectangular contour here shown or which may be of any desired shape. EX- tending across the front of this casing is a plate or dial 11 which has marked thereon a plurality of separate hour indicating marks of which I have here shown three which are numbered respectively 12, 18. and 14. These dilferent clock markings are provided for use at different latitudes. the style of the instrument being set at a different angle with respect to the dial for each latitude. This style is shown at 16 and is in the form of a flat finger which is hinged at its root to a post 17 carried in the casing. In the present embodiment of the invention the device is'arranged for use in north latitudes 35, 4:0 or 45. and these notations are marked on the respective hour elements 12, 13 and 14.
Serial No. 692,363.
following means: The style is formed with I a tailpiece 20 which extends into a slot 21 in the post 1'? and is adapted to bear against an adjustable cam element 22 formed on the inner end of a stud 23 frictionally fixed in the post and having its outer end flush with the rear end of the post, a socket 24 being formed in this outer end which may receive a suitable turning key. Upon the rear face of the post are a number of marks, as here shown 3, designated by latitude numbers in correspondence to those on the hour elements on the dial. while the stud 23 is formed with a single mark 27 which is adapted to be brought into selective registry with the desired one of the marks. The style 16 is normally held in a position lying along the dial plate 11 by means of a tension spring 30 which is connected at one end thereto and at its opposite ends to the bottom of the casing 10, a slotted tube 31 being provided in the casing through which this spring extends and into which the style 16 fits when lying along the plate 11. Formed on the style 16 is a fingerpiece 33 which is pressed toward the dial 11 to throw the style outward, the style coming to a stop when the tailpiece 20 bears on the cam 22.
The casing 10 may have a cover 35 hinged thereto, a packing or gasket 36 being here shown as provided in the cover to form a water tight joint so that the instrument may be worn when the user goes in swimming.
Located in the casing 11 is a compass 38 whose face is seen through an opening in the dial while the latter has a series of scale marks 39 thereon with selected ones of which the needle of the compass must register for any given location. I preferably provide in connection with the instrument a card marked to indicate a compass and having a hand 46 pivoted thereon to indicate the proper arrangement of the compass for a given locality.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Let ters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A sundial timepiece comprising a casing, a dial thereon, a post in said casing, a style hinged to said post, an adjustable stop element on said post, and a part carried by said style to engage the said stop element and limit outward swinging movement of the style at different selected positions of the stop.
2. A sundial timepiece comprising a casing, a dial thereon, a post in said casing, a style hinged to said post, an adjustable stop element on said post, and a part carried by said style to engage the said stop element and limit outward swinging movement of the style at different selected positions of the stop, said stop element comprising a stud rotatable in said post, and a cam member on said stud.
3. A sundial timepiece comprising a casing, a. dial thereon, a post in said casing, a style hinged to said post, an adjustable stop element on said post a part carried by said style to engage the stop element and limit outward swinging movement of the style at different selected positions of the stop, a fingerpiece on said style whereby it may be pressed outwardly, and a spring connected at one end to said style and at its other end to said casing and acting to urge the style inwardly.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed lily signature.
MARTIN FRANK.
