IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. E62,!51, dated April '20, 1875; application filed January 12, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLEMENT L. CARTER. of Union City, in the county of Randolph and in the State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in straddle-Row Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a back view of my plow with my improvements attached; Fig. 2 a side view, and Fig. 3 a plan view, of the same.

The object of my invention is to construct a plow that can be driven near the end, and to be completely under the control of the driver.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

1 construct a frame in the shape of a letter H, the tongue being attached to the center of the cross-bar. The outer plows A A are at taehed to the sides of the tongue, and, by dragbars, curved outward and downward, to the lower ends ofthe upright bars k ofthe H shaped frame. The upper ends of the vertical bars is have slots, to allow the Wheel attachments to slide up and down. B B represent the center plows; c c, the stirrups for the feet of the driver; 1) l), the pivots on which the center plows turn; 6 e, loops to hold the center plows in place; f f, arms at the upper ends of the center-plow standards, to receive the knees of the driver when plowing; g g, the wheels; h h, the axle:: extending from the wheels to the top of the frame; 2' t t t, loops to hold the axles in place; I, the lever; 0, the rock-shaft, connecting the axles together by means of the cranks n n,- S,

' the seat; 1?, the tongue.

The driver being in the seat S, with his feet in the stirrups c c and his knees between the arms f f, it will be readily seen that the center plows are under his control, and that, by moving his knees and feet, he can throw the plows to or from the row, and by means of the lever, with the wheel attachment, can regulate the depth of plowing or lift the plows entirely out of the ground at will.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination of the wheels g, having long stub-axles h, with the frame, having the vertical slotted posts it and guides i, and with the cranks n, rocksha-t't 0, and lever l, as shown and described.

2. The combination of the inner standards B, pivoted at their middle to a rigid support, having the arms f f and the stirrups c, with the loops 6 and the swinging seat-bar S, substantially as shown, and for the purposes set forth.
