My invention relates to improvements in pump rod supports. It is particularly well adapted for'the support of a sectional pump rod in awell casing, While the sections are being taken apart or assembled.
, One of the-objects of my invention is. to provide a novel device for the purpose specitied, which is simple, cheap, strong, durable, not liable to get out of order, which can be easily and quickly operated, which will firmly grip and support the pump rod without liability of its slipping, and at any point intermediate of the coupling ends of a section, and which eliminates one of the two elevating devices 'usually provided for the purpose.
Y A further object of my invention 'is to provide a' novel bell nipple which will support as well as guide the pump rod in the casing.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

For gripping the sections of the pump rod to support thesame-while the sections are being attached to or being detached from each other, I provide two opposing levers 7 respectively pivoted on two horizontal pins 8 respectivelymounted in two pairs of lateral ears 9 with which the members 3 are respectively provided. 1

The inner side of the upper ends of the bell nipple members 3 are upwardly flaring, and the'outersides of the wedge members or jaws 10- are correspondingly. flaring, so that, when the pump rod section 6.is moved downwardly by the weight of the pump rod, the flaring surface of the members 3 will force the 'aws 10 inwardly, so. as to have them tight y grip the section 6, as shown in Fig. 2.. a v 0 release the dpump rod from the 'aws 10, an elevatin evice, not shown, suc as is usually emp oyed for the (purpose, is attached to thepump rod an the latter is lifted thereby, thus drawing upwardly on the wedge jaws 10, which may be swung clear of the section 6, by depressing the outer ends of the levers" 7.

This operation is reversed, when it isdesired to insert the bell nip le. If the nipple is inserte for sup the; pump rod, the parts are assem led as described, the. pump rod leing held suspended by the elevating device, not shown.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the nipple has semi-tubular members and externally threaded to fit inthe T joint 2. The members 3 are releasably fastened together by bolts 4 and nuts 5, ,as was described with reference to the nipple shown in Figs. 1'

- Levers 7 are respectively pivoted on horizontal ins 8 mounted in the ears 9. The levers at their inner ends have jaws 10' provided with teeth 12 adapted to cut into and clampingl engage the sections 6 of the ump rod. The length inwardly of the evers 7 from the pins 8' is such that when the teeth 12'. engage the pump rod section 6, the levers 7 wil clear the upper ends of the members 3', whereby the weight of the pump rod will cause the jaws 10 to grip the section 6 and support it, by a: wedgin action, th distance between the pins 8 an the section 6 being less than the, distance of the teeth 12 from said pins.
I do not limit my invention to the struc tures shown and described, as other modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention,
lVhat I claim is In a pump rod support, a bellnipple 'co'mprising two semi-tubular members detach: ably connected to each other to form a tube adapted to receive therethrough a rod to be supported and having externally threaded co-operating end portions adapted to be litted in an internally threaded end of a suppprting casing, two wedge clam ing memrs fitted in the upper end 0 said bell nipple and adapted to be forced inwardly thereby to a pump rod clamping position, and two levers respectively pivoted to said wed e clamping members and to said bell nipp e member.
