Description

. Patented Mar. 15, 1927.
1 UNITED This invention relates LEWIS ORWIG, F STaLOUIS, MICHIGN.
ANTISLIP DRILL-BOD DEVICE.
Application led July 6,
ly designed for use in pulling drill rods, the primary object of the invention being to provide means which prevent the same from when the pulling again grip the rod well.
An important object of will grip the drill rod to slipping into the well mechanism is released to to pull the same from the the invention is character which in its operation and one to provide a device of this will be automatic wherein a wedging action will be set up between the walls of the inclined grooves of CII the body portion of the device and the gripping elements, by the frictional contact between the drill rod and A still further object gripping elements.
of the invention 1s the provision of a portable device of this character so constructed that it will ybe moved from place purpose.
to place to accomplish its With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds,
and claimed, vit changes in the vention herein disclosed, may be ma in the scope of what is the spirit of the invention.
the drawing:
parting from Referring to the invention nation and arrangement of detalls of constructlon resides in the comblparts and in the hereinater described being understood that precise embodiment of the inde withclaimed, without de- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a gripping device constructed 1n ac cordance with the invention.
Flfrure 2 1s a transverse sectlonal view a une 2-2 Referring to of Figure 1.
the drawing in detail, the
reference character 5 indicates the body portion which is provided with a central bore 6 extending from end bore 6 are the bores 7 that Intersecting the' to end.
extend from one end of the body portion 5 OI upper end thereof to a point in spaced relation with the lower end of the body portion, the lower end ot form of a curved wall the balls 9 that act as of the device.
The balls -9 are the bore being 1n the 8 providing a rest for the gripping elements slightly smaller than the to a device especial- 1925. Serial N0. 41,693.
to the lower portions of the bores 7 gripping 60 the rod and holding the same suspended.
As shown by Figure 1 of the drawing, the bores 7 are arranged at oblique angles with respect to the outer edges of the body portion I3 so that the wedging action as described will 65y take place.
Positioned on the upper end of the body portion 5 is a cover plate 11 held in position by means of screws 12 tothe end that the upper ends of the bores 7 may be opened 70 to allow the balls 9 to be removed'and replaced should they become damaged or otherwise rendered inoperative.
In the use of the device, the body portion 5 is positioned on the drill rod to be pulled, 75 and is disposed adjacent to the mouth of ,the well. The usual pulling mechanism not shown, is now positioned on the rod 10 when the rod 10 is elevated, until the next adjacent section of the rod is elevated above the well, whereupon thel uppermost section is unscrewed from the lower section.
When tbe sections are disconnected, the lower section will move slightly downwardly setting up a binding action between the balls 9 and the walls of the bores in which they are moved to hold the lower rod against further downward movement and retaining the same in such position that the pulling mechanism may be readily securedto the rod for a further pulling of the rod.
I claim: 1
'In a device of the character described, a body portion having a central bore extending therethrough', said body portion having a 95 plurality of bores extending at oblique angles with respect to the outer wall of the body portion, the last mentioned bores communieating` withthe first mentioned bore, said last mentioned bores having their inner end l@ walls curved and spaced from the outer end a removable cover late ositioned over the of-the body portion to provide curved supbody portion and a apt to close the upper porting surfaces, a plurality of balls dlsends ofthe angularl disposed bores. 10 posed within the last mentioned bores and In testimony that clalm the foregoing as 5 ada ted to normally rest on the inner end my own, I have hereto axed my signature.
wa s of the bores, said balls adapted to gri v a rod positioned within the central b ore, an LEWIS ORWIG.
