MINING-MACHINE-CHAIN LUBRIGATOR.
Application filed April 20, V1925.
. in proper amount to the cutter chain during the operation of the machine.
For the purpose of disclosing my invention I have illustrated one embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawings in which- F ig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of so much of a mining chain cutter as is necessary for the purpose of illustrating the ap lication of my invention;
*ign 2 is a transverse sectional view of the oiler;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same and Fig. a is a detail sectional view of the pump piston.
In the embodiment illustrated my invention is shown as used in connection with the usual commercial type of chain mining machine having a relatively stationary frame provided with side bars such as 1 and a relatively movable frame having` chain cutter guides 2 and provided at its rear end with a framework such as 3 for the driv ing mechanism for the chain cutter 4E operating in the guides. As is usual in this type of machine the movable framework is projected forwardly against the breast to be out and moves on the stationary frame 1. After the movable frame has been projected to the limit of its movement it is retracted and after the material has been cleaned from in front of the cutter the relatively stationary frame is moved forward again and the cutting operation again takes place.
In the embodiment illustrated the lubricant container 5 comprises a rectangular box having a lateral extension 6 which is shorter than the height of the box 5. By this construction the container may be conveniently mounted on the movable frame 1 in a position where it takes up the minimum of space and where it can most conveniently deliver the lubricant to the cutter chain. The overhang or shallow portion 6 overhangs the top of the side guide 1 while the deeper portion 5 of the container eX- tends downwardly along the inner face of the side rail. This box is providedon its Serial No. 24,369.
rear end with an ear 7 by which it may be bolted to a part of the moving frame 3. rllhe shallow container portion 6 comprises in itself a container into which the oil or lubricant is adapted to be poured through an opening 8 in the top 9 of the container which opening is normally closed by a suitable cap 10, and the container 6 feeds into the portion 5 through an opening 11 in the side wall 129 which opening is covered by a screen 13 for straining the lubricant before it passes into the container portion 5.
l Within the container portion 5 I mount a pump comprising a casting 14 having a cylinder 15 formed therein, the bottom of `which communicates through a port 17 with the container' and during the delivery stroke of the piston this port is closed by a ball check valve 18. The bottom ofthe cylinder 15 communicates through ports 19 and 20 with a chamber 21 connected by a suitable hose 22 with the delivery pipe 23 mounted on the exterior of the container. Arranged in the bottom of the chamber 21 is a ball check valve 2a which checks the vflow of the fluid in the chamber during the suctionstroke of the piston. Operating in the cylinder 15 is a hollow piston 24 having at its lower end a series ofannular grooves 25a. At the center or middle of these grooves the cylinder isprovided with a series of radial ports or openings 26 through which the interior of the cylinder communicates with the exterior of the cylinder. Due
to the fact that the piston is submergedin Y the oil most of the time, the oil will seep in through the openings 26 to the interior of the piston and during the reciprocating movement ofthe piston this oil owing out through the openings forms an effective oil seal between the piston and the walls of the cylinder.
The cylinder is reciprocated by an oscili lating shaft 27 having a crank arm 28 connected with the piston 25 by a link 29. A.
coiled spring 30 surrounding the shaft 27 and having one end connected to the crank arm 28 and the opposite lend stationarily connected to the partition or wall 12 tends to maintain the piston 25 in its raised or retracted position. The outer end of the shaft 27 is provided with a crank arm 31 adapted, as the movable frame moves forwardly, to engage a stop 32 on the stationary frame and rotate the shaft 27 to move the piston 25 downwardly on its delivery Vamount of "oil deliver)7 required.
stroke, 'this larm 3l being provided "with 'an extension v33 pivoted at 34 to the arm in such a manner that when it engages the stop 32 when moving in onedirection it `will rotate the shaft 27, but when it engages the stop when moving in theoppo'site direction, Will move on its pivot 3a Without aecting t-he shaft. By' the provisicnof'an adjustable stop 35 the distance the piston 25 moves upwardly under the infiuenceofthe coiled spring 30 ma7 he varicdzto thereby vary the stroke of the .piston in accordance With the The -delivery pipe 23 terminates in a forked nozzle, one leg 36 of which delivers oil tothe top'of the cutter chain Whilet-he other leg '37 vdirects the'oil to a pointbetiveen the cutter chain and the cutter chain guide.
cla'im as my invention:
'1. A chain oiler for miningmachin'e cutterscomprisina an oil receptacle having` an oilsump, an oil pump mounted in said sump and including a reciprocating piston, an oscillating shaft. having` a crank arm connected to said reciprocating piston, a spring for retracting said `crank `arm toA move the piston Vonit-s suction stroke and means exterior of 'the receptacle connected to said shaft, engaged by amoving part ofthe machine for operating the piston on its forcing stroke.
i2. Pin-oilerforthe cuttingichain'offa mining` machine comprising' an oil receptacle vlia-ving an oil sump, a pump mount-ed in lexterior ofthe receptacle and arranged to deliver oil to the chain. cutter and the conduitI extending ybetween Asaid nozzle and said oil pump.
3. Anoiler for thecutting` chainofa mining machine, comprising an o il receptacle having" anl oilsump, a pump mounted Iin said sump comprisinga cylinder having an intake openingat its bottom. a check valve for closing` v'saidopening'in one direction, said cylinder delivering` intoan oil conduit anda check valve in said conduit for closvthe; same in one direction, a delivery nozzle on'the lexteriorof: said casingy connecting with said conduit and arranged to 'deliver oil to th'ecutting chain and means on the `exterior rof the casingarranged Vto been-- ga'ged by the moving part of a mining` machine for operatingsaid pump.
In Witness whereof, l, fllEnMN L. 'SEE- KAMP, have hereunto set my hand lat'Gril- `lespi'e, "Illinois HERMAN L. SEEKAMP.
