FOLDING TABLE.
application mea may v, 192e. serial 1vol 107,428.
My invention relates to improvements in folding tables, and it consists in the combi-` nations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a folding table in which the trestles may be readily folded into compactl forms.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described in which the trestles may be readily unfolded and rigidly secured to the table top.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described which has novel means for securing a pair of boards, which form the top, to the trestles.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particu larly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the acco'mpanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is an end elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the device, and
Figure 3 is a view of one of the trestles in folded position.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a top consisting of boards 1 and 2. A pair of trestles is provided. The trestles are identical in construction, and a description of one will apply to both. Legs 3 and l are provided with crois-shaped braces 5 and G which are pivotally secured to brackets 7 and 8. The brackets 7 and 8 are rigidly mounted upon the legs 3 and 4.-, respectively, near the upper ends thereof. The lower ends of the braces 5 and 6 are pivotally secured to movable brackets 9 and 10, respectively. The brackets 9 and 10 are constructed so as to conform to the legs 3 and 4, and are disposed concentric therewith. Each leg is provided with a spring clip 11 which is rigidly secured at one end to the leg, fthe opposite end being` adapted to be received within a recess 12 in the leg. A lug 13 is rigidly mounted upon the clip 11, and.. is adapted to Ybe received within an opening 15 in the movablebracket.
A hinge block 16, of the special shape shown in Figure 1,'is rigidly mounted upon the upper end of the leg 3. Upon the hinge block 1G is pivotally mounted a crossbar 17, the free end of which extends a slight distance beyond the leg 4. The upper end of the leg 4 is cut away so as to receive the crossbar 17. A pin 18 is rigidly mounted in the leg l shown in Figure 1. A catch 19 yhaving a tapered edge 20 is rigidly mounted upon the bar 17, and is provided with a recess which is adapted to receive the pm 18. A stop 21 is rigidly mounted upon the erossbar 17, as shown in Figure 1. A movable holding member 22 is disposed concentric with the crossbar 17, and is provided with outwardly extending lugs 23 and 24. A movable stop member 25 is mounted upon the crossbar 17 and is adjustably held in place by means of a thumb screw 26. A supporting bar 27 is movably disposed upon the crossbar 17.
A brace consisting of 1nembers'28 and 29 is provided with a. bracket 30 at the upper end thereof. The bracket 30 is provided with outwardly extending lugs 31. The lower ends of the members 28 and 29 are hinged to the brackets 9 and 10, respectively.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. Let. us
assume that the device is in folded position,
as shown in Figure 3. By holding the leg 3 in the left hand and the leg t in the right hand, and forcing the legs away from each other, the cross-shaped braces will cause the movable brackets 9 and 10 to move upon the legs 3 and fl, respectively, until the lugs 13' are received within the openings 15 therein. During this movement, the members 28 and 29 will separate and permit the free end to move downwardly until it is stopped by means of a strap 32.
The board 2 may now be placed upon the cross-bar 17 so that one edge thereof will strike against the outwardly: extending prongs of the stop 21. The movable holding member 22 is then placed against the other edge of the board 2. The board 1 is now placed upon the crossbar 17 so that one edge thereof strikes against the movable holding member 22. The outwardly eX- tending lugs 31 of the bracket 30 are disposed between' the boards 1 and 2, as shown in Figure 2. The stop member 25 is now moved inwardly by means of the thumb screw 26 until the projections upon the stop member and the movable holding member 22 are embedded within the boards. The supporting member 27 is free to move with respect to the crossbar 17. The boards may readily be removed by loosening the thumb screw 26. The boards may new be turned over, reversed, or otherwise changed, if desired. y
I claim:
l. In a device of the type described, a folding trestle comprising a pair'of legs, a crossbar pivotally carried by one of said legs, a brace pvotally secured at one end to saidvlegs, means carried by said crossbar for gripping and for rigidly holding ay plurality of boards, and means for rigidly securing said brace between said boards.
i2. In a device of the type described, a
folding trestle comprising a pair of legsxa crossbar pivotally carried by one of sai legs, means for securing said crossbar to Jche other leg', cross-shaped braces disposed between said legs and having one of their ends pivotally secured to the legs, and means secured to the other ends of said crois-shaped braces for automatically locking said braces, said crossbar, and said legs -in opened position.
