therefrom.
This and any other objects hereinafter appearing are attained by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of a. latch AIHl E ES keeper, shown partially in Vertical section taken on line 11 of Figure 2;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view of the latch taken on line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a front View of the latch and keeper, showing the latching bolt held in partially retracted position;
Figure 4: is a side View thereof; and
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of ccrtain parts taken on line 5-5 of Figure 3.
In the accompanying drawings, a latch having a casing 1 is mounted on a door 2, the keeper 3 thereof being mounted on the door frame 1-. The latch comprises a. latching bolt 5 swingably mounted at 6 and spring-pressed at 20 into latching engagement with the recess 7 of the keeper when the door is closed. This bolt 5 is retracted from such engagement, to open the door, by drawing outwardly the lever handle 8 swingably mounted at 9. This handles horizontally disposed portion 10 engages said bolt to swing it upwardly and out of said latching engagement, passing through an opening 11 in the bolt. By drawing this handle outwardly from its normal and inoperative position shown in Figures 1 and 2, and to approximately the position seen in Figures 3, 4 and 5, the portion 10 of the lever handle engages and moves the latching bolt upwardly far enough to cause it to be engaged holdingly by the handle, whose catch 12 has passed under and behind the bolts lip 13 and thus holds the bolt partially retracted.
Assuming now the door to be open and the as by its weight, to its normal inoperative latchs parts in the position seen in Figure 5: If the doorbe slammed shut, the outer end of the bolt, or the roller If]: with which it is desirably provided, strikes the inclined face of the keeper, nearits uppermost point 16, as seen inFigure 4i, whereupon the closing movement of the door continuing, theroller rides up and over said inclined face and its uppermost point and into the keepers recess 7 behindsaid face. In so doing the latching bolt is raised higher than its position seen in Figure 5, i. e., to a position in which the bolt is completely retract ed or raised high enough to permit the door to, open and close. It will be seen that thus the bolt is moved only a slight distance upwardly in slamming the door shut, i. e., the distance from partially retracted position (seen in Figure to completely retracted position, and thus the jars and strains sustained by the latch and the screws 18 by which it is secured to the door is minimized, being much less than if the roller 14 travelled the length of the keepers face 15 in closing the door. As the bolt rises from the position seen in Figure 5 in the closing movement of the door, it releases the catch 12 whereupon the handle lever 8 is returned,
position seen in Figures 1 and 2. In opening the closed door the lever handle is drawn outwardly, thus raising the roller 14 high enough to pass over the high point 16 of the keeper and, such drawing movement continuing, the door is drawn open by the lever handle. In thus opening the door, the lever handle is lowered slightly to permit the catch 12 to engage the bolts lip 13 and hold the bolt partially retracted in readiness for the next closing of the door.
, The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. In combination with a keeper therefor, a door latch comprising: a bolt adapted to latchingly engage the keeper; an operating handle movable to move the bolt to, and releasably hold the same in, partially retracted position and movable farther to move the bolt to retracted position, the bolt and handle having parts which mutually engage to hold the bolt in partially retracted position,
the bolt being also movable from partially retracted held position to retracted position by striking the keeper in the closing movement of the door.
2. In combination with a keeper therefor,
a door latch comprising: a bolt adapted to latchingly engage the keeper; an operating handle movable to move the bolt to partially retracted position and having a catch engaging the bolt to hold the same in said position, said handle being movable farther to move the bolt to retracted position and the bolt being also movable releasably from said catch by strikingthe kee )er in the closing movement of the door.
3. In combination With a keeper therefor, a door latch comprising: a bolt adapted to latchingly engage the keeper; an operating handle movable from normally inoperative position to move the bolt to, and releasably hold the same in, partially retracted position and movable farther to move the bolt to retracted position, the bolt and handle having parts which mutually engage to hold the bolt in partially retracted position, the
bolt being also movable from partially retracted position to retracted position and the holding engagement of the handle With the bolt being released to return the handle to normally inoperative position by the bolt striking the keeper in the closing movement of the door.
4-. In combination With a keeper having an inclined face, a door latch comprising: a
bolt adapted to latchingly engage the keeper 1 inside said face; an operating handle movable to move the bolt to, and releasably hold the same in, partially retracted position and movable farther to move the bolt to retracted position, the bolt and handle having parts Which mutually engage to hold the bolt in partially retracted position, the bolt being also movable from partially retracted held postion to retracted position by engaging said face of the keeper in the closing movement of the door.
In testimony whereof I have here-unto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 19th day of November, 1925.
ELMER C. OSBECK.
