UNITED STATES KATHERINE MCCLAIRE, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAIR CURLER.
Application` led August 22, 1923.
My invention relates to improvements in hair curlers, and has for its object the provision of a simple and eiicient device of this character which is durable and eicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a curler embodying the invention;
Fig. 2, an enlarged section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, an enlarged section taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 4, a section of one of two metallic end caps employed in the curler.
The preferred ,form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a central core 5 consisting of a length of copper wire covered by a rubber covering 6. The rubber covering 6 is soft enough to permit of ready bending and yet rm enough to constitute a suitable base or part for curling the hair; the rubber covering 6 is also of considerable thickness so as to give the curler proper size and stiffness. The rubber covering 6 is in turn covered by a woven fabric covering 7 and the ends of the curler are covered by metallic end caps 8. These end caps 8 are preferably made of brass and have outwardly turned edges 9. The outwardly turned edges 9 facilitate insertion o f the end of the curler body into the cap` and particularly the outer woven fabric covering 7. After the caps have been placed in position, the edges 9 are turned inwardly in a suitable machine to cause said edges to impress themselves in a rubber covering 6 and thus securely bind themselves in place and also bind the fabric covering 7 in place. It will be noted that when the edges of the caps are turned inwardly and impressed into the rubber covering 6, a resilient locking groove is formed in said covering co-operating with said inturned edge to securely bind fabric covering 7 in place without danger of cutting the same. The turning in of the edges 9 also has a tendency to draw or stretch the fabric covering 7 and thus insure a smooth exterior to the curler.
Serial No. 658,679.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification Without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hair curler comprising a central core of pliable metal; a covering ,for said core of relatively softer material; a fabric covering for said core covering; and metallic caps secured over the ends, the edges of said caps being turned inwardly and impressed into said core covering to form a resilient locking groove therein, substantially as described.
2. A hair curler comprising a central pliable wire; a rubber covering for said wire; a woven cover for said rubber covering; and metallic caps secured over the ends, said caps being provided with outwardly iaring edges, and said outwardly Haring edges being turned inwardly and impressed into said rubber covering to form a resilient locking groove therein, substantially as described.
3. The method of making hair curlers which consists in providing a body having a 'central core of pliable metal, a softer covering therefor and a woven fabric casing over said covering; lic caps over the ends of said body and turning the edges of said caps inwardly to form locking grooves in said softer covering, substantially as described.
4. The method of making hair curlers which consists in providing a body having a central core of pliable metal, a rubber covering therefor and a woven fabric casing over said covering; and then placing metallic caps with outwardly flaring edges over the ends of said body and turning the edges of said caps inwardly to form locking grooves in said rubber covering and to stretch said fabric casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
KATHERINE MCCLAIRE.
