P. JOHNSON COMBINED TOMB MARKER AND DECORATION CONTAINER Filed Aug. 12. 1925 Ira e75: Pf/W) JOHMSON,
Patented Mar. 1, 1927.
UNITED STATES PERRY JOHNSON, OF TOPEKA, KANSAS.
COMBINED TOMB MARKER AND DECORATION CONTAINER.
Application filed August 12, 1925. Serial No. 49,859.
My invention relates to a combined tomb marker and decoration container.
The objects'of my invention are as follows;
First; to provide an inexpensive permanent tomb marker.
Second; to provide a tomb marker that may be anchored in the earth.
Third; to provide a tomb marker functioning as a visible container for flowers,
or other decorations, also as a protection for said decorations.
Fourth; to provide a tomb marker with flower boxes placed on the exterior for growing plants.
Fifth; to provide a tomb marker having a cover on which to place the epitaph.
These and other objects will be hereinafter more fully explained, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters will apply to like parts in the different views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the marker.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation transverse to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a reduced drawing of the device showing a spire and glass gables as a modification.
Figures 4 and 5 are enlarged details of the spire and cresting.
Fig. 6 is a detail with the cresting broken away showing two of the vent ports for the roof.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the construction through the roof and side walls- Fig. 8 is a transverse view of Fig. 7, parts removed for convenience of illustration.
Fig. 9 is a cross section through the corners.
Fig. 10 is a vertical section through the floor and flower box.
The mechanism herein shown in the drawings consists of a con tainer or housing having a bottom, four sides and roof, the corners thereof functioning as legs.
The roof 1, functions as a lid hingedly attached at the ridge as at 4, and on said ridge is a cresting 5 which is hinged to one side of the roof as at 6, the other side loosely engaging as at A, and having means for at taching firmly to that side of the roof by a catch 7, when said roof is normally closed. It will be understood that locking means will be provided for both sides of the roof as disclosed an (l either side may function as a lid by which means access is had to the interior for placing flowers or other decorations within.
The cresting is so made that it has its hearings on the roof as at A and the opposite side hinged as at 6 providing an open space as at B, (shown in Fig. f) the object of which is to provide a vent or outlet for the roof insulation means hereinafter described.
The roof preferably is made of sheet metal having an insulation device 8 firmly attached thereto; said device may be of fiber insulation "material void of depression, but preferably I have made it of wood as a feature of economy, therefore I have provided a depression 9, centrally disposed thereon, the roof being supported on the raised portion as at C, and communicating with the space occasioned by the depression. I have provided a plurality of ports 10 in the frieze 11 of the structure as shown in Fig. 8, and a plurality of ports 12 in the sheet metal roof as an exit for accumulation of heat, the said ports being concealed by the cresting heretofore described; the said cresting being open at the ends, provides a longitudinal air channel or outlet for the draft or current acquired.
The epitaph or other inscription is to be applied to either slope of the roof by placing thereon raised metal characters, or the same may be produced by painting or engraving. The gable 13 may be of metal ormay be so framed that a glass can be inserted therein.
The frame of the container is preferably constructed of metallic L-shaped'members 14:,
as shown in Figures 9 and 10, and the frieze 11 may be of one leg of said members; 15 represents the glass panels which slidably engage in the corners thereof, as shown at D in Fig. 9, the inside guide member 16 is preferably made of metal. and welded to the corner member substantially as shown, 17 is a metal bottom bearing on the horizontal leg of the base frame 18, said bottom being removable for convenience of cleaning and on which rest flower pots or other decorations as shown in Fig. 1'.
I have provided flower boxes 19, which are detachable, each of the said boxes being provided with a hook 20, engaging in a loop 21, formed in the vertical leg of the base member, the said loop being formed to avoid the hook member contacting the glass which is snugly engaging against the said leg.
The legs 22 are integral with the corners of the mechanism, and extending downward are adapted to seat in a concrete foundation as shown at 23 in Fig. 2, by which means permanent anchorage is obtained.
As a modification I have shown a spire as shown in Fig. 3 and on said spire may be placed a cross, ball, or other emblem as desired; the said spire is rigidlyattached to the cresting and adapted to swing therewith as shown by dotted line E, when either side: is being opened as shown by dotted lines F.
I do not confine the mechanism liereindescribed and shown in the drawings to be the exact shapedis'closed and the metal may be copper 'armored or galvanized, or any substantial 1i1ateri:il,a11dthe glass may be :of varying thickness or reinforced by metal fabric, 'or the device may be'applied to other purposes of exterior use.
Having fully described any invention "with certain modifications I wish to state-that such othermodifications may be employed as lie'withi'n the scope of the appended claims. What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A combined tomb marker and decoration container comprising a housing having transparent sides, a metallic framework for said'transparentsides,a roof for said housplurality of aligned ports adjacent said ridge and in alignment therewith, said last named ports communicating with the spaces between the root and the insulation, a cresting adapted to be positioned over said ridge and last named ports, said cresting projecting a substantial distance above the ridge for formi'ng a longitudinal air channel, said cresting extending for substantially the entire length of the roof, hinge means con 'necting one side of said meeting with one side of the roof, catch means carried by the other side of the roof for normally retaining said cresting in position, said eresting adapted to swing upwardly upon the raising of either side of the roof, said first and second 'name'd ports and said oresting adapted to provide an aircirculating means for said roof.
