WILLIAM H. KELLY, OF TERRE HAU'IE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKETS FOR CHAIN-PUMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,967, dated April 13, 1875; app ication filed September 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. KELLY, of Terre Haute, in the'county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chain-Pumps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side perspective of one rubber jacket and its holder, with connectinglinks attached. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the jacket and holder. Fig. 3 is a bottom end view of the jacket and holder in the pumpstock.
My invention relates to chain-pumps, and consists of a rubber jacket provided with wedge-shaped slits, in combination with a cast-metal holder, the lower parts of which holders are enlarged to form proper supports for the lower parts of the jackets, as hereinafter more fully explained.
A represents one of the rubber jackets provfid with wedge-shaped slits cl, on the lower edges of the jacket. B represents one of the cast-metal holders, the upper part of which is provided with a shoulder, a, to hold the jacket in place, and the lower part is enlarged to form the proper support for the lower part of the jacket, as shown in the drawings. The eyes I) c are for receiving the connecting-links of the chain 0.
As the chain is drawn up into the pumpstock 1), the lower parts of the jacket are compressed by the inner walls of the stock, nearly closing the slits d, leaving only slight openings on the outer edges, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The lower part of the holder being enlarged, as shown, supports the lower part of the jacket and causes it to fit snugly in the pump-stock, forming thus the requisite suction, and when the pump is at rest the water gradually passes downward through the slight openings of the slits d.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In chai n-puinps, the holderB, as constructed, in combination with conical jacket A, having wedge-shaped leak-passages d, substantially as and for the purposes described.
