Description

Unmans'ra'rns PATENT Qrrron.
HERMAN BROGKSMITH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF ONE HALF HIS RIGHT TO ERNEST QUAST, OF JERSEYVILLE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACK S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,925, dated April 13, 1975; application filed December 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN BRooKsMIrH, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Lifting-Jack; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The withindescribed invention is an improved lifting-jack, designed, mainly, for raising heavy vehicles, such as wagons, omnibuses, 860.; and consists in certaindetails of construction, whereby the implement is rendered unusually po werful, compact, and inexpensive.
1n the drawings, Figure is a side elevation of the jack, and Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same.
A and B, Fig. 1, represent two sections of the standard, the upper section being adapted to move vertically upon the lower one. the parallelism of the two parts being maintained by the two overlapping tongues a and b, which slide vertically in guide-loops formed by the iron bands 6 e e e. The steps on the top of section B are for the purpose of adapting the jack to lift vehicles of difi'erent heights. 0 represents a lever pivoted to the movable section B at the point p, and to this lever is pivoted, at the point r, the upper extremity of the link 9, whose lower end is similarly secured to the standard A.
In using the device it is placed under the vehicle, in such a position that the axle will rest on one of the steps of the movable section B. The lever O is then depressed, as indicated by the arrow, until the shoulder m (shown in dotted line) comes in contact with the side of the link g. By this operation the section B is forced upward a distance equal to the distance of the center of the pivot r from that of the pivot 19; and, further, the shoulder m being so distanced as to come in contact with the link 9 only when the pivot 4 (whose travel is indicated in dotted line) has justpassed the lower center, the section B is securely locked in position by its superincum bent weight.
I claim as my invention The lifting-jack described, having the parts A B, with overlapping tongues a I), securinglinks e e, lever U, and link g, the lever being provided with a limiting-shoulder, m, by means J of which the position of the link is determined when the jack is fully raised, as described.
This specification signed and witnessed this 24th day of November, 1874.
HERMAN BROOKSMITH.
