' Application filed July 20, 1925. Serial No. 44,859.
The present invention consists of a railway transfer clamp and embodies a combination clamp for embracing the transfer packet and cutter for severing the transfers.
Objects of the invention are to provide a clamping member which embraces the transfers and is slidable thereon to position the clamp at any predetermined point on the transfers at which point it is desired to sever one or more of the latter; to provide a clamp of this character which yieldingly engages the transfers to prevent casual displacement of the clamp; to provide a clamp the length of which is in excess of the width of the transfers so that the clamp may be disposed transversely across the transfers or at an angle oblique to the longitudinal axis of the latter to permit diagonal severance of the transfers; and to provide a clamp of very simple and durable construction capable of expeditious engagement on and disengagement from the transfers.
Other objects of the inventionwill be apparent from the following description of the present preferred form of the invention taken in connection withthe accompanying drawings wherein e Fig. 1 is a side elevational view ofaclamp constructed in accordance with this inven tion a part thereof being broken away to disclose details;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the clamp illustrating the application of the same on a packet of street railway transfers;
Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional view of the clamp looking at the spring in top plan view;
Fig. tis a bottom plan view of the clamp; and
Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary transverse sectional view of the clamp illustrating its application on a packet of transfers.
In order to illustrate the application of the present invention a packet of street railway transfers 6 is shown which may be of standard or especial construction or compilation, and, in the present instance, is shown to be lined transversely to provide a series of compartments 7 in which indicia 8, representative of the hours and fractions thereof, is printed.
The clamp constructed in accordance with this invention is especially adapted for use on different species of transfer which is severable either transversely or diagonally to indicate the specific hour and fraction of the hour that the transfer is issued.-
The present clamp consists of a base plate 9 which may be of substantially oblong con-' figuration as shown and is equipped with a yoke 10. The yoke 1n the present instance consists of a metallic rod the ends of which are bent at right angles to provide a U- receive the ends of the yoke 10. The fol lower plate. 11 is normally urged into engagement with the vertex of the yoke 10 by a semi-elliptical spring 18 the ends of which latter are provided with substantially U- shape notches ll in which the ends of the yoke member are positioned.
In use of this device, the follower bar 11 is urged toward thebase plate 9 against the resistance of the spring 13 to permit introduction of the transfer packet between the follower plate and the vertex of the yoke. After this has been done the follower plate is released and'permitted to yieldingly impinge against the bottom of the transfer packet due to the inherent resiliency of the spring 13. The vertex of the yoke impinges against the top of the transfer packet. By preference, the lateral margins at the inner face of the vertex of the yoke are beveled to provide cutting edges 15 to facilitate severance of one or more of the transfers in an apparent manner. It will be noted, especially upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawings, that the terminals'of thespring 13 are in intimate contact with the ends of the follower plate 11, even beyond the ends of the yoke 10, so as to simultaneously elevate both. ends of said plate and eliminate the ly replaced in an apparent manner. It is, of course, to be understood that although this clamp is preferably made of metal I am aware that it may be constructed of other materials and used in the same manner Without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. Moreover, changes may be made in the details of construction, proportion and arrangements of parts within the scope of the claim hereto appended.
What is claimed is A street railway transfer clamp including a base plate equipped with a U shaped yoke the ends of which are fixed in said plate and the closed end of the yoke provided With cutting edges; and a follower plate yieldingly mounted between said base: plate and the closed end of the yoke to urge the transfers against the latter. 7 In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature.
