pressure'will assist in maintaining the valveon its seat. When the lever 43 is operated to unseat the valve, compressed air will force the piston 12 outwardly. In order to insure the return of the piston 12 to its retracted position, we provide a spring-46 adjacent each end of the support13 for the die head and attach one end of each spring to an ear 47 on said support 13 and the other end of the spring 46 to an, ear 48 on the rear portion of the flattened portion 16. The piston 12 is formed with a groove or bleeder pas sage 4:9 in its periphery to permit entrapped air to escape.
In'operation when it is desired to stamp wood or kindred material, the forward end of the device is pressed against the same and the lever 43 is depressed, whereupon the compressed air will force the piston and its associated parts forward and link 35 will throw the inking pad out of the path of the characters which will be imbedded in the material operated upon. When the handle 13 is released the springs 46 will return the parts to initial position for repetition of the operation, the air behind the piston escaping through the bleeder passage.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in our device without departing from the spirit of our invention,'a nd we therefore do not limit ourselves to what is shown in the,
drawings and described in the specification but only as set forth in the appended claims. .I-Iaving thus fully described our said invention, what we claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A portable stamping device comprising a body, a rod mounted in said body, a die member on the forward end of said rod, a piston on the rear end of said rod, means for admitting compressed fluid to said piston for forcing the same longitudinally of said body, and a spring having one end connected to said die member and its other end connected to said body whereby when the die 'member is forced forwardly the spring will return the same to its initial position, substantially as set forth. I
2. A portable stamping device comprising "a hollow body having an integrally formed forwardly extending portion with parallel slotted arms, a die head having its ends disposed within the slots in said arms, a piston in said hollow body, a rod connecting said piston and die head, and means for admitting compressed fiuid to said piston for forcing the same longitudinally of said body, substantially as set forth.
3. A portable stamping device comprising a hollow body having an integrally formed forwardlyextending portion with parallel slotted arms, a die head having its ends disposed within the slots in said arms, a pislow body having a forwardly extending portion .with parallel slotted arms, a die head having its ends disposed within the slots in said arms, a piston in fsaid hollow body,
a rod connecting said piston and die head,
dinally of said body, and a spring having one end connected to said die member and its other end connected to said body whereby when the die member is forced forwardly the spring will return the same to its initial position, said piston having'a bleeder passage permittingescape of fluid entrapped therebehind, substantially as set forth.
5. A stamping device comprising a body,
means for admitting compressed fluidf'to. said plston for forcingvthe same longitua rod mounted in said body, a die member s on the forward end of said rod, a piston on the rear end of said rod, means for admitting compressed fluid to said plston for forcing the same longitudinally of said body, and means for. inking said die member com prising an inking pad plvoted'on said body and having a link piv-otally comrecting said pad and said rod whereby when the rod is moved outwardly theinkin'g pad will be retracted and when moved in a reverse direction the pad will-be moved toward said die member, substantially as set forth. ,7
6. A stamping devicecoinprising a hollow body having a forwardly extending portion with parallel slotted arms, a die head having its ends disposed between the slots in said arms, a piston on the rear end of;
said rod, means vfor admitting compressed fluid to said piston for forcing the same lon gitudinally of said body, and means for inkmg said d e member comprising an inking pad pivoted onsaid body and having a link pivotally connecting said pad and said rod whereby when the rod is moved outwardly the inking pad will be retracted and when moved in a reverse direction the pad will be moved toward said die member, substantially as set forth. p
7. In a stamping device, a handle having a longitudinally disposed cylindrical bore, a piston'in said bore, a piston rod having one end connected'to said piston and having its other end extending outwardly beyond the end of the bore, a cross-head on said piston, a spring disposed longitudinally of and on each side of said handle having one end connected to the handle and its other end connected to the cross-head, substantially as set forth.
8. In a stamping device. adapted to be operated in a horizontal position, a reciprocating cross-head having tapered transverse dove-tail recesses in its forward face and a die member mounted on said crosshead, said die member having tapered transversely disposed dove-tail projections on its rear face corresponding to the recesses in the cross head, substantially as set forth.
9. A fluid operated stamping device comprising a hollow handle, a piston in said hol low handle having a die member sup-ported on its forward end a bracket on said handle, an ink pad pivoted on said bracket, a bracket on the forward end of the piston and a link pivoted to the bracket on the piston and to the ink pad whereby when the die member is operated the link will throw the ink pad into and out of the path of movement of'the die member, substantially as set forth.
10.- A stamping device comprising a hollow handle, a rod mounted in said hollow handle, a die member supported on the forward end of the rod, a piston on therear end of the rod, an inlet for admitting an actuating medium into said hollow handle for forcing: the piston outwardly in the handle,
means for controlling the flow of the actuating medium through said inlet, spring means for retracting the piston, said piston having a bleeder passage permitting escape of entrapped fluid, substantially as set forth.
11. An air operated hand stamp comprising a hollow handle having a forward-1y eX- tending portion with arms extending outwardly and forwardly from opposite sides of said handle, a rod in said hollow handle, having its rear end shaped to conform to the interior ofthe handle and forming a piston and having its opposite end extending out ofthe hollowhandle and provided with a die member supported thereon and guided by said arms, means for admitting compressed fluid to the piston for operating the die member andspring means disposed longitudinally of the handle and connected at oneend to the handle and at the opposite end to the die 'member for retracting the same, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hands at Laurel, Mississippi, this 26th day otSeptember, A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty-five. V I
