form whereby it may be easily transported; Another object is to provide a combined chair and stool of the foldable'type that is extremely strong and substantial, and capable of withstanding considerable abuse the structure being adequately braced for that purpose.

This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.

In describing my invention in detail,'reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the structure forming the subject matter of the present invention in the form of a chair.

Figure 2 is a front view of the structure as shown in Figure 1 in a slightly enlarged form.

Referring to the drawings'in detail it will 'be' noted that the piece of furniture forming the subject matter of the present invention is provided with two pairs of spaced crossed legs 1 and 2 and passing through the central portion of each pair of crossed legs are pivo t pins 3 and 4 whereby they may be folded in the usual manner. The outer crossed leg of eachpair has pivotally secured thereto a brace member which includes a. pair of slotted links 4 and 5 andsolid links (Sand 7. The inner crossed legs of each pair are also provided with a brace member of the same T structure and therefore it is thought that description of one of these brace members will suffice. The arm 5 of the brace members is slightly longer than the M1114 thereof and extending from the inner end of the arm 5 is a projection 8 adapted to be received in a depression 9 when the brace member is arranged in operative position-as shown, in Figure 2 of the drawings. The respective links 6 and 7 of the brace members are fixed to the crossed legs below the point of connection ofthe links 4 and 5 and the opposite ends of the links 6 and 7 are mounted for slidable movement in the slots of the links 4 and 5*through the medium of headed studs 10 and 11. V

The upper ends of each of the crossed legs are reinforced by substantially U- shaped cap members 12 through which passes a dowel pin 18 substantially secured in the ends of the legs through the medium of a nut 14 embedded therein and engaging the under surface of the cap members 12 as clearly shown in Figures 6 and 7 of the drawings. The cap members are fixed to the legs through the instrumentality of headed bolts 15 passing transversely there through. The dowel pins extend a considerable distance above the upper ends of the crossed legs and are adapted to he received in the ends of the cross strips 16 which also have their ends reinforced by cap members 17 of a shape similar to the cap members 12. The cap members 17 being provided with openings. aligned with bores passing through the respective ends of the cross strips for receiving the dowel pins as shown. The cap members 17 are also secured by headed bolts 16. The usual canvas seat 18 or the like is secured to the upper surface of the cross strips 16 by any well known means. The structure thus far described is a stool and in order to provide a chairthe upper ends of the outer cross legs has formed therethrough registering openings 19 to which is secured the lower ends of a pair of upright strips 20 and 21. 1 The upright strips 20 and 21 are substantially braced by a cross member 22 which has its ends fixed adjacent the upper ends thereof by bolts 23 which has threadedly secured thereto wing nuts 24 so that the upright strips may be readily removed from the cross member if desired. In order that the back may be adequately secured the same is braced through the medium of adjustable flexible straps 26 and-27 which are secured substantially midway the ends of the upright strips as clearly shown in Figure 1 of The opposite ends of the flexible strips are provided with a plurality of aligned openings 28 adapted to be received by the threaded ends of bolts 29 and held thereon through the medium of the nuts 30. By employing the plurality of openings it will be readily apparent that the back may be adjusted to various inclina tions, depending of course upon the num ber of openings employed. I

As shown in Figure 3 the chair is arranged in foldedposition and this may be readily accomplished by breaking the brace members at the point of intersection of the links 45 and 5 thereof and folding the crossed 7 legs in a manner to lie in parallel relation. What I claim is In a piece of furniture of the foldable type, crossed legs arranged in parallel pairs, dowel pins arranged in the upper ends of said legs and rising therefrom, a nut secured to each dowel pin intermediate its ends and being embedded in the legs, a cap for each leg and overlying the nuts -forretaining the dowel pins in operative position, bolts arranged transversely of "said legs for securing the caps thereto, and a seat portion held associated with said legs through the instrun'ientality of the dowel pins.
