Description

' 1618,15? Feb.15,1927. J'HARMON CLOTHES PROTECTING DEVICE Filed Nov. 6, 1925 I T1731 a L Y TIE 4' gwntov MW Patented Feb. 15, 192?.
JANE HARMON, 0 TOLEDO, OHIO.
CLOTHESPROTECTING DEVICE.
Application filed November Objects of this invention are to provide anewand improved clothesprotecting device of the above character which" 1s simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture.
and has the new and improved features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described.
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawings, in which, 7
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the device in unfolded position; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4: but with the parts in compact folded position.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a hanger formed from a single piece of wire which consists of a horizontal portion 1, upright leg portions 2 and 3, and formed on the free ends of the legs 2 and 3 are hooks 4t and 5 respectively, by which'the devices may be suspended from suitable supports, such as a horizontally extending rail or bar. Formed intermediate the ends of the legs 2 and 3 and preferably closer to the horizontally extending portion 1 are loops 6 and 7 respectively. In this in stance the loops 6 and 7 project in opposite directions outwardly and at substantially right angles to the respective legs, and although this arrangement is desirable, these loops may be formed with equally beneficial results in another manner.
Pivoted to the upper sides of the loops 6 and 7 are substantially U-shaped cover-supporting frames 8 and 9, and in practice, a cover may be attached to or slipped over these frames with slits in the cover through which the hooks 4 and 5 may project. For holding the frames 8 and 9 in a horizontal position the end portions of each frame are provided with outwardly bent portions 10 which are adapted to engage the lower side of the respective loops 6 and 7 thereby providing a stop for limiting the outward swinging movement of the frames. For holding the loops together and prevent separation thereof, clips 11 surround the loops in close juxtaposition to the legs 2, and these 6, 1925. Serial No. 67,262.
clips also prevent sidewise movement of the frames 8 and 9.
An outstanding characteristic of the invention resides in'the provision of loops in the leg portions of the hanger which constitute supports to which the U-shapedframes may be pivoted. By means of this construction a simple and compact arrangement is provided, and as indicated in Fig. 5, the frames 8 and. 9 may be folded together so that the device may occupy but a small amount of space, thus enabling the device to be conveniently packed. Another desirable feature of the invention resides in the extreme simplicity of the construction which enables the device to be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
It will be seen that I have provided a construction which satisfies the objects enumerated above and one which constitutes a valuable advance in the art. While I have shown the invention in a certain physical embodiment, it is to be understood that modifications of the structure shown may be made by those skilled in this art without departing from my invention as expressed in the following claims. 7
WVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a clothes protector, a substantially U-shaped central frame having suspension hooks on the free upper ends of the legs of the frame, a loop extending outwardly from the side of each of the legs of the frame above the bottom of the latter, a pair of oppositely disposed U-shaped cover supporting frames on opposite sides of the central frame, means whereby to pivot each of the free ends of the cover supporting frames to the respective loops, and stops on the free ends of the cover supporting frames engageable with the loops to hold the cover supporting frames in horizontal position while permitting the latter to be folded to lie against the central frame.
2. In a garment protector, a central frame having upper suspension means and a clothes hanger support below the suspension means, a pair of opposed cover supporting frames on the opposite sides of the central frame, supporting means on the central frame for the cover frames, means to pivotally connect the cover frames to the said supporting means, and stops on the cover frames engageable with the supporting means f r the co er f ame t hold he lat posite sides'of the central frame, projections extending outwardly from the sides of the legs of the central frame, means to pivotally connect the cover frames to the projections and stopson the cover frames engageable with the projections to hold the cover to be folded to lie against opposite sides of frames at substantially right angles to the central frame and to permit the cover frames the central'frame.
4:. In a "clothes protector, a substantially U-sh-aped central frame having suspension hooks on the free upperends of the side of the frame, a loop extending outwardly from the side of each of the legs of the frame above the bottom of the latter, a pair of oppositely disposed U-shaped coversupporting frames on opposite sides of the central frame, the free ends of the cover frames extending through the respective loops and be- 7 ing curved to engage about the upper sides of theloops whereby to pivotally support the cover frames and being extended downward'ly to form stops which engage the lower sides of theloops to hold the cover frames horizontally, the stops of the respective opposed cover frames :engaging the opposite faces of the lower sides of the loops and permitting movement of the cover frames to lie against the central frame.-
5. In a garment protector, a central frame having upper suspension means and a-olothes hanger support below the suspension means, a pair of opposed cover supporting frames on the opposite sides of the central frame, st0ps on the cover ffames, and a pair of'comhined means onthe central frame to pivotally support each of the cover frames and to engage the stops of the latter whereby to hold the' cover frames in horizontal position and to permit the cover frames to be folded to lie against the oentralwframe.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
