H. FULENWIDER ET AL HOLDING DEVICE Fon SHINGLES Feb. 15, 1927. 1,618,077

HOLDING Ynnvron' Fon semanas.
Application ledvJ'une 5,
This invention relates to holding devices for shingles and p-roposesthe construction of means adapted to be fiXedly secured, for
y supporting and holding flat the butt end of a shingle laid diamond-wise, and at the same time housing but not penetrating the adjacent corners of the underlying shingles of the previously laid course.-
One of lhe objects of the invention 1s to provide. means for performing lthe'abo-ve stated functions, so formed as to be definitely allocated by the adjacent corners'of the shinglesV of the said underlying course, and having the 'shingle' .holdingportions arranged to actas guides for the butt yof the superposed shingle, so that the latter willV automatically *be positioned symmetrically when in place in the shingl'ejho-lding device, without the necessity for an accurate determination of its position when laying the shingles. Y Y
Another object of the invention is to constructy and arrange the exposed portions of the holding' device so that'they shall be of low visibility when in position on a roof, and of such nature as to accelerate the drainage of moisture therefrom.
Other objects of theV invention relate to simplicity of manufacture and ease and convenience n use of the device.
Still other objects of the invention will appear as the description o-f the same. develops.
In the drawings f Figure 1 is a plan-view Vof a portion of a. roof embodying a number of our improved holding devices for shingles. Y
Figure 2 is a plan view of va holding de- `vice for shingles on an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a section taken along the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is an end View of Figure 2` viewed from abo-ve. t.
Referring now in detail to the several ligures, the reference character a represents the lower or underlying row of any Vtwo successive courses of shingles with which your invention is associated. The reference character, bi denotes' the second or superposed course of shingles. signed to fit o-ver the adjacent corners v'of adjoining shingles in the vunderlying course and to support by its butt a shingle of the overlying course.y
The invention consists of a plate 1 preferably made of sheet metal and of any suit-` Our invention is de-v 1924. serial Nn. vis-,oise
bis dimensies; which sprefefabiy Stamped so as to pro-vide onopposite sides the embossed portionsj2' and 3', said portions being 'i of sulrform las to constitute right-triangular depressionsonjts lower surface. j' Said f ldepressions are of a depth eojualZ to the rthickness of the shingles and Afit over the corners o f ,adjacentfshingles in thev lcourse by which' means the plate 1 is deiinitely allocated with respecthto saidc'o'urse of v shingles,A
T- hefplate end with turned-up portions 4 vand. 5 forming ledges upon whichV the sides of Ithe butt .Ofa superposed. shingle b areadaptedto rest; r'llhe'loi'veri part of theplate 1 islprefl 1 is' providesajram11s-iowa l aS- *fO .Pslmf'. 'the e tsred-11nr0rlti0s te. be of relatively great length lenabling them" to serve( as guides for automatically locating ythe superposed shingle in its proper. lposition. These two features, that is to say, the f i depressions formed by the lemloossed portions 2 and 3' by which the holding device` is located, andthe turned-up portions 4 and 5 by means of which the shingle is positioned, permit the shingles of a course to be laid accurately and symmetrically without the necessity, on the part of the person who lays the shingles, of making ank accurate determination ofthe position of the; same. i
The edges of shingles are usually'lcut in 'planes perpendicular-to the surfaces thereof, and it is preferred to make the turned-i up portions 4 and 5 with a curved vbase, or
l with a base which does notv closely lht the sides o f the shingles at the edges, thereby providing capillary space between the shingle and shingle holding device for the drain-V ing away of moisture vfrom between the ,means such as the pointed lugsl 6V and 7,
adapted to 'penetrate the superposed shingle adjacent the edges thereof when the turnedup portions are struck with a hammer. It
is, however, well within'the scope of the inf vention to omit the pointed lugs and have y the edges of the turned-upv portions 4 and 5 engage'the surface of the superposed shingle with frictional contact. The upper part of the plate 1 may be formedwith holes 8 llO Civ
for nailing'the holding device to the roof,
or the holes inay be oniitted at the tirne ofV understood that the nail holes are covered.
by the superposed shingle and that the nails donot penetratethe adjacent corners oi the underlying course or|` shingles as in former devices,' leaving'the latterintact,y yet held irinly inV position by being housed beneath the embossed portions 2 and 3.
It vis obviousthat the forni and configuration of our improved holding device 'for shingles can beinoditied to ay certain extent Without vitiating the-eii'ectiveness of a pat'- ent granted'upon the invention, Wherefore it iste bepunderstoodthat the scopeiof tne invention iS not limited except by the eX- pi'ess terlns of the appended claiins.`
Y Having described our invention what We claim asjnew and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- l. 'A device for holding shingles comprising aplate having Vdepressions on its lovver ''acejlitt'ing :the adjacenticorners of adjoining shingles in an underlyingcourse, the
lower part of said'plate being formed with ledges embracing the edges of theA butt of a superposed shingle7 said ledges being slightly Wider at their base than the thickness ofA ing shingles in .an underlying course, thev low r part of. said plate being i'orined with ledges einbracingthe edges ot the buttoiy a superposed shingle and being provided with shingle penetrable lugs, said ledges being slightly vrwider at their base than the thickness of said.siu 3erposed shingle. i
A device roi holding shingles ce1nprf'- ing ai tace fitting adjacent corners ot adjacent shingles inA an underlying course the lower part of said-plate being forni/ed Vwithledges en'ibra'cing the edgesl of' the butt oia. superposed shingle `and being provided with shingle-engaginglugs, said ledges being slightly Wider' at their base than the thi'clrness of said superposed shingle.
