Application mea october, a, 1924,.y seriai No. 741,196. j
Thisinvention relates to improvementsin roller'skates and` particularly to improvements in the Construction of the truck and truck mountings,.the construction lof the forward and rear sections vofthe sole plate,
and the meansl for permittingv the adjustment thereof and to the clamping device, for securing'the sole of the shoe to-thevskate.
An object of the invention resides in providing .aspecialconstruction of the forward and rear sections of the sole plate, to permit the relative adjustment thereof, and a specially constructed locking means for' securing said sections in adjusted vrelation '15 having a .reciprocated member mounted in vthe rearsection provided with locking projections .adapted to extend through registering openings in the. front and rear sections of the sole plate, and to beretained normally in one position` for holding said plates normally in adjusted relation.
The invention also includes other objects and improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts,` which v K are more particularly pointed out in the following description and in the claims directed to the preferred form of the invention, it being understood, however, that various changes in the details of construction and arrangement of these parts may be made, without departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention as described and claimed.
In the drawing, forming a part of this application: 4 l
str-ucted in accordance with this invention, one of the rear wheels being omitted an the axle therefor shown in section.V
Figure 2 is a plan view of the skate shown in Figure 1..
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan of the central portion of thev skate showing thc locking device.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail sectional View taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, showing the locking device.
The toe plate of the skate comprises forward and rear sections 1 and 2 respectively, which are constructed and assembled for relative adjustment to change the size of the skates, while the rear section Q isV formed 4with the usual heel plate` 3, to which is secured the strap sections 4, by which the heel portion'of the skate may be secured to the shoe of the wearer.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of askate, con- 11- in the front sectionl, so that thev nut 12 carried vby the front sectionwill slidably engage in the 'slotformed therein as indicated at'y 13. f A locking member` illustrated particularly in Figures 1 and 7 comprises a plate member 14 fromthe central portion of which projects a stud 15, adapted to extend through-'the slots 7 and13of the front and rear sections ofthe sole plate respectively, so that the same will be maintained in aligned relation atv all times, and particularly during the adjustment thereof for changing the length of the sole plate to fit a different size of shoe. This plate member 14 carries a lpair of depending pins 16, which are adapted to extend through the pairs of aligned openings 8 and Y9 respectively, in the front and rear sections 1 and 2, so as to lock said sections in-av desired position of adjustment. -An arm member 17 is mounted on the stud 15, and has eyes formed in 'the opposite ends thereof adapted to receive the ends of the pins 16,. as clearly shown in Figure 4.
The-arm member17 is carried Vby the upperend of the coil spring 18, the llower end of which is fitted against a nut 19,threaded on the lower end of the said pin 15, for 'nor- 95 mally maintaining said spring under tension .and moving the plate 14 into engagement with the tongue 6 onv thefront section of the sole plate, so that thepins 16 will engage lin the openings in the respective sections when in alignment or registry, and hold said sections in fixed adjusted relation.
From the foregoing description, it should be. readily appreciated thata simple, yet efficient construction Vhas been providedk for constructing and mounting thev front and rear. sections of the sole plate for relative adjustment, while at the vsame time they are constantly .maintained in proper aligned relation, in any position of adjustment, as
well as during the adjustment thereof, together withV the provision of the locking means for holding them Xed in an adjusted relation, which is readily moved to an inoperative position to permit the adjustment of the plate sections, without removing any part thereof which is likely to become lost, and which will readily reengage in the aligned openings in the sections of the sole plate, for again permanently securing them in adjusted position.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. Askate ,comprising a sole plate formed of forward and rear sections having interfitting overlapped portions adapted for relative sliding movement to adjust thesize of said slrate,"a locking member having a shank slidably extendingthrough said section and provided with depending pins each of said sections being formed with Ya plurality of' openings arranged in predetermined relation therein adjacent the slot yin said tongue and adapted Yto receive said pins, and resilient means connected with said shank for normally koperating saidV looking lnember` to project the pins through the'openings in said sections for locking the same in adjusted relation. Y Y
2. A skate comprising a sole plate having forward and rear sections, said forward secv tion having a rearwardly extending tongue therein adj acent the said slot in vsaid tongue,
a locking member including a plate having a depending shank through the slotted portion .of said tongue of each of said sections, said plate carrying depending pins 'adapted for engagementin the openingsV formed in said sections, and a spring having an abutment ,disposed toward said sole plates connected to" said shank for normally Yoperating' the locking member and plate to position the depending pins in predetermined openings i'n eachof said sole sections fOr retaining positions. y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. FRANK kM. DGR-E.
