Application fid November 23,'1923. Serial No. 676515.
device having improved 'features of construction.
T hese, and ,any other obj appearing are attained by, tion finds preferable embodiment in, structure hereinafter particularly' described in the body of this specification and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in whichi ects hereinafter and the inven- Figure 1 is a longituclinal sectional view` of a portion of a loose-leaf binder, taken on a plane correspondng to line -1`-1 of Flgure 3;
Figure 2 s a like View ofthe same, but showing the covers open and certain parts separated;
Figure 3 is a sectional'view of a portion of the same taken on line 3-3 of Figure' 1; Figure 4 is a sectional view of certain parts taken on line 4-4 of Figure 3. e
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated by the drawings, a loose-leat binder r is shown having covers 1, 2 connected by a flexible back 3. A pair of cooperating binding members 4,' 5, bind or clamp the binder's contents-the leaves or sheets 6- between them, the lower bindng member 5 engaging the under side of said contents 'and carrying posts 7 each of which is internally-screw-threaded as shown at' 8. A hollow cylindrical element or sleeve 10 is adapted to receive the post which may' be inserted longitudinally thereinto, said sleeve being insertable into openings 11 in the V looseleaves 6. This sleeve has a lateral extension or radial fiange 12 at its outer or upper end, of larger diameter than the leaves openings 11 and therefore adapted to holdingly engage the opposite or upper side of the bindefis contents, in the operative position of the parts seen in Figure 1. This sleeve maybe withdrawn' 'rom the post with some of the loose leaves or sheets with. it, other leaves or sheets remaining on the post, as seen in Figure 2, so that the leaves'may be separated at any point, each portion of the contents thus separated remaining in the connected relation either on the sleeve er on the post as seen n Figurea. A screw 13 is threadedin the post' and has a head 14 Whichmay be freely received by, or passed into and out of an opening 15 in the upper binding member 4. Means are provided for' releasably holding the screw s head 14 when received into said 'opening 15 ;preferable means 'or so doing are particularly shown in Figure 3, comprising a catch 17 carried bythe upper binding member 4 slidably on rivets'18 extending through the catch s slots 19., This catch has an opening 20 with an enlarged portion 21 adapted to receive the head 14 of the screw and a contracted portion 22 adapted to hold this head from releasing movement. In Figure 3 this catch is shown slid tothe, position'in which the screws heads are released and may be withdrawn from the slots 20.. v
In the operative position ofthe device, shown in Figure 1, the screws are turned down in the posts to a position wherein they press the upper binding member 4 'on the upper end of'the sleeves oradjacent to their flanges or extension's 12, thus clamping the contents in the binder. When it is desired to open the binder to remove or lnsert leaves at -any place, the catch 17 is m ved to the position seen in Figure 3, i
whereupon the screws heads may be withdrawn through the upper bindng members openlngs 15 and through the sIeeVe; and
when the desired removal or insertion of leaves has been made, the parts may be re-` turned to the operative position' of the binder seen n Fgure 1. In the drawngs, a pair of posts, sleeves, etc. are shown, but it is manifest that any suitable number thereof may be provided. In the illustrated construction, the binding members are flexibly connected at 25 and. 26 respectively to. the
back 3. I
The binding members 4 and 5 are desirably formed of a metallic strip 27 covered by a fabric sheath 28.
The invention being pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of Construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore shown or described. i i
I claim:
1. In a loose-leat binder: a binding mem-` ber engaginga side of the binder s contents intended to', be
and carrying an internally-screw-threaded post; asleeve adapted to receive the post ing an opening' adapted to receive the screws head; means for releasabiy holding the screws head received in said second membefs opening.
2. In a loose-leat' binder: a binding Inem ber engagng a side of the binder s contents and carrying an internally-screw threaded post; a sleeve adapted to receive the post and insertahle into openings in said contents and having a lateral extension engaging the opposite side of 'said contents;
ber slidably into and ont of a position Where- 'in it holdng'ly engages the screws head.
ln testinony Whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 19th day of November, 1923.
