SCOOP BOARD LATCH Filed Nov. 28. 1925 ATTORNEY.
CABA
Patented Feb. 15, 1927.
TED STATES JOHN SCHNAEEL, OF HAMPTON, IOWA.
SCOOP-BOARD LATCH.
Application filed November This invention relates to land vehicles and pertains particularly to a. wagon scoop board.
The primary object oi this invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set lorth, ot a means tor securing a scoop board in position against the end ot a wagon body to make the boa-rd grain tight.
Another object ot the inve ution is the provision. in a manner as hereinafter set Jt'orth, ot a scoop board provided with side wings adapted to overlie the sides ot' a wagon body to facilitate the loading ot grain into the wagon and having means whereby the scoop board may be secured in any desired outwardly inclined .position trom the end of the wagon body.
A further and linal object of the invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinai'ter set forth, ot a scoop board and latch structure ot simple but strong and durable construction, easy to manipulate, inexpensive to manutacture and adapted to be easily and quickly placed into position.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part ot this speciication, with the understanding that the invention is not confined to any strict contorniity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient 'tentures ot the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
ln the drawing z vFigari-e 1 shows in side elevation a portion ot' the rear ott a wagon body showing the scoop board and latch structure embodying` this invention applied thereto.
Figure is a top plan View ot the same.
Figure. 8 is a vertical section taken upon the line 3--3 of Figure 1 Referring now to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals ot' reference indicate eorresl'mnding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates the bottom ot a wagon body which is provided with the usual side boards 2.
In order to make such wagon bodies suitable tor the carrying ot grain, the sides are built up to give a body of greater depth and this building up consists in placing intermediate and upper boards 3 and 4 respectively in edge to edge relation above the side boards 2 as shown. The side boa-rds 2 and 28, 1925. Serial N0. 71,948.
the intermediate boards 3 are provided with the loops 5 and the intermediate boards and the upper boards 4 are each provided with cleats 6 which are designed to extend downwardly through the loops 5 in the boards therebeneath as is clearly shown in Figure 1. ln this n'iannei.' the Side boards 8 and 4 are securely held in position over the side boards 2 thus giving a wagon body ot greater depth than usual.
Secured transversely of the rear edge ot the bottom 1 ot the wagon is a series of hinge rod bearings 7 through which a hinge rod 8 extends. Pivotally mounted upon this hinge. rod 8 is a grain scoop board or end gate 9 across the rear face ol which there extends the reinforcing bands 10, the lower ends of which are looped to receive the hinge rod 8 and thus hold the grain scoop hingedly in connection with the end of the wagon body. This grain scoop, is as shown, of the same height as the built up wagon body and is designed to Swing upwardly and tit against the ends of the side boards 2, 3 and 4.
At each side of the grain scoop 9 there is secured a retaining wing 11 which extends rearwardly from the grain scoop as shown and which is ot greater width at the lower portion than at the upper portion, the upper part tapering inwardly as shown. The lower portion ot each ot the wings 11, is provided with an arcuate slot 12 through which a bolt. 13 extends, which bolt extends from the side ot the wagon body 2. Upon the end of this extended bolt, a wing nut 14 is threaded which as shown, may be tightened against the wings 11 to secure the same against the wagon body to thus hold the scoop board in any desired outwardly inclined position.
Secured to the outer side of each of the upper side boards 4, inwardly of the end thereof is a latch plate indicated generally by the numeral 15. This latch plate as shown has that edge farthest removed from the rear ot the guide board 4, ot' arcuate contour as indicated at 16, the curve extending 'from the upper portion ot the plate downwardly toward the rear edge thereof. T he upper part of the plate at the front edge thereof is split downwardly as indicated at 1T to set up the tongue portion 18 which is bent inwardly beyond the inner face of the plate and, the lower rear edge ot the plate is further provided with a rearwardly extending tongue 19 which is also bent inwardly like the tongue 18. These tongues are adaptles cd to be placed against the side of the boards l and have securing bolts 20 paseed therethrough, to hold the plate in spaced relation to the outer side ot' the board.
Secured to each side edge of the grain chute 9 is a right angled nieinber having a short- Ql which is Secured across the rear side ot the scoop board and a relatively long leg 22 which when the scoop board is in up position as shown in Figure l lies alongside ol' the top boards l and is extended between the side board and the plate l5.
This long leg 22 ol each ot the right angled n'ieinbers carries a latch arin 23, one end ot which is inset and pivotally secured to the leg 22 as at 2li while the other end cxtende a eul'ietantial distance beyond the end ot the leg 22 and forincd to provide the handle 25. lllach latch arin carries an inwardly extending pin i6 upon the inner tace thereof which pinn when the scoop board ie in up position with the leg E22 extended beneath the plate l5 rides down over the curved edge lo ot the plate to draw the Scoop board 9 tightly against the onda ot the side boards ot the wagon body. rThe pin Seats in the angle toi-ined between the lowerinost portion o'l' the curved edge lo and the top ot the rearwardly extending tongue 19, as shown in Figure l.
Frein the foregoing description it will be readily seen that when the scoop board 9 is swung upwardly against the ends of the side boards of the wagon body, the lega 22 ot the right angled member carried on each side ot' the Scoop board will pasS beneath the latch plate l5 and will act to prevent any side movement ot the wagon side boards either inwardly or outwardly thus greatly strengthening the `sides ot the body, Ry swinging downwardly the latch arni to cause the pin 2G to ride down over the curif'ed rear edge lo oi the plate l5 a binding, locking action in Set up to hold the Scoop board tightly against the rear ende ot the wagon body side boards, thus prerentifig any chance ot the joint between the Scoop board and the wagon body side boards opening to let the grain leak troni the wagon. 1When the scoop board is released and snvung outwardly and downwardly ae indicated in dotted lines in Figure l and in Figure 2, the side wiege ll upon the scoop board prevent the grain troni flowing over the aides thereot while being removed or placed into the wagon body.
,Having thus described my invention what l claim iS:-
