A. COUSINARD FRICTION GRIPPING MEANS Filed Dec. 5. 1925 A Zberi' Cousiwuzrd Patented Febals, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT GOUSINARD, 0F COURBEVOIE, FRANCE.
FRICTION GRIPPING- MEANS.
Application filed December 3, 1925, Serial No. 73,075, and in France May 12, 1924.
This invention relates to friction gripping means, its object being to provide means for holding a movable part in a fixed body firm as soon as the n'ianipulating means therefor is released.
According to the present invention I pro vide brake jaws Which are normally kept pressed against a brake drum by resilient means, said jaws being provided with a central aperture which is greater in length than in width and two eccentrically 'disposed apertures whose inner edges are concave to form inclines upon which frictionally engage projections integral with the operating handle for the movable part, the actuating portion of which latter protrudes into and entirely fills the central aperture and is integral with the operating handle.
The invention is shown by way of example as applied to the window of an automobile, in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. l is a longitudinal section through the axis of the handle and Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line A-B of Fig. 1. v
in principle the present arrangement con sists of a drum 1 having a shaft 2 to which is secured the handle 8. Two driving memhers etcarried by the shaft 2 actuate the brake jaws 5 during their rotary movement, such members 4 bearing on the inclined surfaces 6 of the jaws so freeing them from the drum 1 and thereby compressing the springs 9.
The brake jaws 5, being thus brought closer together, can be turned by the handle 3 which will cause the pinion 8 to rotate and operate the movable member to which it is connected by chain or gearing.
' The operatlon of the device is as follows: I
is applied to the pinion 8 this presses apart the jaws 5 causing still greater friction, this being effected by means of the two plates 7 so that any movement of the movable part,
independently of the handle is impossible and r the greater the pressure applied the stronger will be the frictional grip of the jaws 5.
It is to be understood that the invention is applicable to any apparatus where it is required to secure a moving member in a fixed part and that the minor details may vary Within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim: I
Friction gripping means consisting of a brake drum, brake jaws provided with a central aperture which is greater in length than in width and with two eccentrically disposed apertures whose inner edges are concave, springs between the jaws pressing them apart and into contact with the drum, a movable part, andprojections carried by: the movable part and playing in the apertures in the jaws to engage the concave edges of said apertures and withdraw the jaws from the drum.
Signed at Paris,in the County of Seine, France, this nineteenth day of November ALBERT COUSINARD.
