Description

N. A. JOHNSON WRENCH Filed A112. 11. 1921 l atented Feb. 15, 1927.
AUNT-E STATES? A. f oHNsoi or anmnsrowiv; "NEW yonxjf 1 fears" V WRENCH."
' "Application filed August 11, 1921. Serial Inf 491,841.
The invention relates to adjustable jaw wrenches for bolt nuts; and the objectvof the improvement is to provide a simple adjustablejaw wrench of great strength and durability which has a simple andpositive adjustment of the. movablejaw, the'jaws being held in comparatively perfect 311113 ment and the design of the'parts permit- I t ng of quick and easy "construction and as-.
seinblage; and the invention consists in the.
novel features and combinations hereinafter set forth and claimed.
' In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the wrench with the jaws opened to their widest adjustment. Fig. 2 is an edgewise elevation of the wrench head from the ad justing and fixed jaw side; and Fig. 3 is a similar elevationof the opposite side of the wrench showing the rotatable holding'n'ut for the adjusting screw and the'strong dove- V tail construction .of the holding iportion-of the adjustable jaw. Fig. aisqa perspective nut. for the'end of said screw to hold it firmly in position while adjusting the movable jaw. Fig. 8 is an edgewise elevation of the wrench head without the movable jaw and adjusting screw, showing the dovetailshaped slot therethrough.
Like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The wrench belongs to the class of adjustable jaw wrenches in which one of the jaws is a fixed jaw integral with the head and handle of the wrench, and the other jaw is adjustably placed opposite said fixed jaw, the head having a slot with dovetail-shaped holding side walls within which a dovetail shaped extension of a movable jaw is slidably retained.
The wrench consists of aihandle 10 which is preferably placed at an angle to the faces of the jaws instead of in line therewith so that a longer sweep is given to said wrench handle in turning the bolt nut.
The numeral 11 designates the wrench head which has the fixed jaw 12 thereon, the inner face of said jaw adjacent the head having angular braces to strengthen said fixed jaw.- The bracingportions. extend from the fixed aw 12 onto the wrench head 11 each side of a' central crosswise slot 14.
The wrench head 11 has,as stated, a slot liellextending therethrough, which slot has re ief dovetail-shaped side conformations 15 in its walls 16, and a round unthreaded lowerportion 17 to rotatably' ,recelre therein the threaded adjusting screw 18. Said 'slotfl extendsthrough the wrench head 11 includ-P the fixed jaw 12. The wrench head 11' preferablyhasanotch 19 beneath said fixed jaw 12 to receive the nurled adjusting head 200i the ad usting screw .18 for the manual actuation of the same. .The opposite end of the round opening portionl'? ofthe slot .1 4:
has-around enlargement-or countersunkpor tion ,21 within which the-roundlnut2210 'tatably fitsso that when turned" onto the end of the adjusting screw- 18,'it holds said mt. ustmg screw firmly in posit on in ad usting themovable jaw-23, yet does not extend be- '1 yond thewrench' head,
The movable .jaw. 23 has the Maia.
shaped extension24 which slidably fitsTwithr;
in the dovetail-shaped.jsloti l l,so that when in position within said slot and braced by the adjusting screw 18, the movable-jaw 23 is firmly and bracingly held in position throughout its entire adjustment. The portion 25 of the jaw 23 extends downwardly toward the adjusting screw 18 and is-corre spondingly threaded to mesh in said adjusting screw, preferably with a buttressed threadfacing toward the fixed jaw 12 and headx20 so thatsa-id adjustable jaw 23 is firmly held in alinement bythe straight sides I of said buttressed thread, and forms as it were rack-teeth 26 in said lower edge of said movable jaw extension. Said buttressed thread 26 is preferably out in said extension 25 by clamping four ofthe movable jaws 23 at substantially right angles to one another so that they may be drilled and the but- 7 tressed thread 26 may be out simultaneously in four jaws, as will be readily understood.
The dovetail-shaped construction for the movable jaw 23 holds said jaw firmly in alinement as hereinbe'fore stated. It also permits a lighter head construction for the wrench which assists in taking the strain in starting nuts, since it bracinglyholds the wrench jaws totheir work.
Whatis claimed as new is: 1. In a wrench, a wrench headhaving a fixed-jaw and having a slot crosswise therethrough with a dovetail-shaped opening therein superimposed upon a smooth round.
opening, an adjustable jaw having a dovetail-shaped extension slidably and conformably fitting in said dovetail-shaped opening and having rack teeth in its lower edge exj tending into said smooth round opening, a
screw rotatably'fitting in said smooth round opening in saidhead and meshing with said rack teeth in saidrmovable jaw to adjust the same, and means torotate said screw.
V 2. In a wrench, a wrench head having a J'fixed jaw and having a crosswise slot therethrough with a dovetail-shaped opening therein superimposed upon a round smooth lower portion of said opening, an adjustable jaw having a dovetail-shaped extension slid ably and Tconformably fitting in said dovetail-shaped portion of said opening, said 'ad-. just'a'ble jaw having rack teeth on said extension Which extend into said round smooth portion of said opening, a suitably threaded V screw fittingin'said round smooth portion of said open ng having a nurled headon one end for adjusting the same and a round nut on the opposite end for holding said screw in Sfl1d [round smooth opening,-
7 said round smooth opening having an enlargement at- "one end'to rotatably receive said round nut on said adjusting screw.
3. In a wrench, a head having a fixed jaw and having a slot crosswise therethrough with a dovetail-shaped opening therein superimposed upon a round smooth lower portion of said opening, anadjustable jawhaving a dovetail-shaped extension slidably and conformably fitting in said dovetailshaped portion of said opening and having buttress-shaped teeth on its lower edge which extend into, said round smooth portion of said opening, a screw having a buttress shaped thread fitting in said round smooth portion of said opening, said screw having a nnrled head. on one end for adjusting the same and a round nut for holding the opposite end of said screw, said head having a notch therein on the under side of said fixed jaw to receive said nurled head of said adjustin'grscrew, said round smooth portion ofsaidopening having a round smooth enlargement to rotatably receive said round nut on said ad ustlng screw, said buttress-shaped teeth on said extension fitting in said but tress-shapeduthread on said adjusting screw to adjust said movable .jaw as desired. I
' 4. In a wrench havinga fixed jawat one side of the wrench head, a slot in said head extending under said jaw and open atthe rate under strain.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
