embodying a fluid pressure cushion for the blank holding means and which cushion is adapted to be removed or swung out of the way to permit of the use of the same machine for blanking operations, thereby 1 rendering it possible to convert the same machine from a drawing press to a blanking press and vice versa.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishmentof other new and useful chjects as will appear,-the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several partshereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying-drawings illustrating this invention and in which- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation, partly broken away and partly in section of a sheet-metal working machine having a cushion attachment constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention applied thereto, and showing the cushion in position so that the machine may be used as a drawing machine.

'Theblank holding member 17' is suppins 19 which pass through the bed plate 13,- and these pins engage or rest upon a pin plate or pad 20 which is connected with the piston rod 21, whic in turn is connected with a piston (not shown) thatis reciprocable 'in' a cylinder22.
The cylinder 22 is supported by a member 23 preferably in the form of abracket or I support pivotally mounted as at 24 upon a portion of the visfiandard 11. The bracket or eld in position so that the cushion will be operative with respect to the blank holding member 17, in any desired or suitable manner such as by means of ;bars or rods 25 which depend from a portion of the standard 11. The support 23" is preferably provided with recesses or openings 26 which extend. through the front edge of'thesupso as to receive a portion of the bars or rods 25. Nuts 27-28 are threaded uponthe bars v25 respectively above and below the support 23 for holding the latter in position, and if desired plates or closuremembers 29 may be removably secured to the edge of the support 23 for holding the parts against 0.0- p
cidental disengagement.
Depending from the cylinder 22v is a tubula r member' 30 which has communication with the interior of the cylinder and connccted with this member 30 is a supply pipe 31 which leads to any suitable source of fluid member 17 so that when the die descends the die 14 as the blank holding member 17 will be depressed against the resistance of the cushion formed by the cylinder 22, the piston therein (not shown) and the piston rod, fluid being supplied to the under side of the piston from any suitable source.
When it is desired to convert themachine from a drawing press into a blanking or punching press, the cushion is rendered inactive and this is accomplished by allowing the fluid in the cylinder to escape so that the pin plate or pad 20 will drop to the position shown in dotted lines in Figure 1. The nuts 28 may then be adjusted or removed and the plates 29 detachedso that the support 23 will swingabout its pivot 24 from the posi- -tion shown in-full lines iii Figure 1 to the position shown in Figure The plate 13 with the die 14 thereon, together with the blank holding member 17 and pins 19 may be removed and another plate 33 may be placed upon the bed 34 of the machine. The plate 33 is provided with an aperture 35 therethrough, and a die having an aperture 37 therethrough 1s mounted upon the plate 33 and secured in position in any suitable manner.

The punchings-40 from the material 39 will then fall through the opening 35 in the plate 33, the cushion duringthis'open ation being out of the .way so as not to impair the operation of the machine as a punching or blanking machine.
. -If desired, and as a means for insuring the holding of the cushion out of therway and in an inoperative position, any suitable means may be provided. A simple and eflicient means embodies an eye 41 which is connected with the support 33, and a hook 42 is connected by one end as at 43 with the standard 11.- This hook is adapted to engage in the eye 41 and thereby hold thesu pport 23 with the cylinder 22 thereon in Figure 2.
With this improved construction it; will be manifest that there is provided a simple and eflicient means whereby a single machine may be operated as a shaping or a punching or a blanking machine, thereby increasing several parts, within the scope of the claims,
without departing from the spirit ofthis invention.
What is claimed as new is 1. A sheet metal drawing press embodying blank holding means, a reciprocable member with which the blank holding means co-operates to grip the work, cushioning means for the blank holding means, means embodying a pivotal connection between the press and cushion for rendering the cush-. ioning means inactive, and means for converting the said drawing press into a blanking or punchingpress when the said cushioning means is rendered inactive.
2. A sheet metal drawing press embodying blank holding means, a reciprocable member with which the blank holding means co-operates to grip the work, cushioning means for the blank holding means, and means swingingly mounting the saidcushioning means for adjustment to a position out of the way to ermit another and dif-' ferent character ot operation to be performed by the said rcciprocable member.
3-. A sheet metal drawing press embodying blank holding means, a reciprocable member with which the blank holding means co-operates'to grip the work, a fluid pressure cushion for the blank holding means, and means embodying a pivotal con-' motion between the cushion and press for mounting the said cushioning means for. bodily adjustment to a position out of the way to permit another and different character of operation t'obe' performed by the said reciprocable' member.
4. A sheet metal-drawing, press,embodying upperland lower co-operating die members, blank'holding means co-operating with one of the-die members for clamping the work while it is being shaped, a cushion for theblank holding means, means mounting the cushion for bodily swinging movement v wherebythe vcushion may be swung into an inoperative position with respect to the A shaping dies, and an interchangeable die for one of the first said dies for converting the means mounting the cushion. for bodilymember and co-operating with the first said die, a swinging support, a cushionlng device carried by thirsuppdrt and adapted to be positioned beneath one of said dies, blank holding means upon which the said cushion operates, the said cushion being movable with the said support into-an ina'ctiveposi tion while the remaining portions of the machine remain active.
7. A sheet metal drawing press embodying co-operating dies vbetween which the material is worked, and means embodying "a fswmgingly-mounted cushion ng device shiftable to another position upon the press, and interchangeable dies for converting the said machine from a sheet metal drawing press into a sheet metal punching or blanking machine.
8. A sheet metal drawing press embodying I co-operating dies between which the material is worked, and means embodying a cush-' ioning device and interchangeable dies for converting the said machine from a' sheet metal drawin press into a sheet metal punching or ihlankingmachine, the said cushioning device embodying a cylinder and piston, and a swinging support upon which thereabove, a swingingly mountedv support the said bed plate, a die the said cylinder is mounted.
9. A sheet metal drawing press embodying a bed plate, a ram member reciprocable thereabove, a swingingl disposed below the sai bed plate, a, die cushion mounted upon the support andmovable therewith, the said support being adaptedto be moved about its'pivot to swing the said cushion into an inactive position and out of the way, and means for securing the support against movement about its pivot.
10. A sheet metal drawing press embody e ing a bed plate, a ram member reciprocab disposed below cushionmounted upon the support and movable therewith, the said support being ada'pted to be moved about its pivot to swing the said cushion into an inactive position and out of the way, means for securing the support against movement about its pivot, and
