This invention relates to terminals for electric conductor wires.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient device of this character equipped with means for quickly connecting it to a wire without the use of tools and by the use of which a strong, reliable connection is made and the frayed end of the insulating cover secured by the connector.
Another object is to provide a terminal of this character so constructed that one terminal may be used with many sizes of 7 wire.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention hereih disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a terminal constructed in accordance with this invention showing the first step of the application of the wire thereto.

Fig. 4 shows a side elevation with the terminal in operative position on a wire; and
Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
The gist of the invention resides in providing a wire terminal having a head for connection with a binding post and equipped with a pliable tail adapted to be wound around the Wire to secure it to the terminal.
In the embodiment illustrated the terminal comprises a head 1 and tail 5 constructed of a sheet of soft copper struck out in the form shown in the drawings the head being preferably bifurcated and the furcations 2 and 3 thereof arranged parallel and in the same plane for connection with a binding post. This head 1 has a wire receiving aperture 4 in the body portion thereof preferably in a plane intermediate between that of the furcations and is equipped with a longitudinal rearwardly extending fiat tail 5 here shown extending edgewise at an oblique angle from one edge of head land which is equipped at its junction with said head on its inner edge with a notch 6 for apurpose presently to be described. This tail 5 is designed to be twisted around the stripped end of the wire 10, said end being threaded throughthe opening 4 in thehead and then folded back fiat against the body portion of the wire before the tail of the terminal is wrapped therearound thus binding all possible fray of the cover of the wire into the coil effecting a reinforcement of the wire as well as a strong connection of the terminal thereto. 1
In the use of this terminal the wire 10 has the insulating cover 12 stripped from i the end thereof for about two inches, more or less.--This stripped end 11 is then threaded through theopening 4 from the front to the backof the terminal, as shown in Fig. 1. The endof the insulating. cover 12 is then drawn up into the notch 6 of the terminal and the stripped end folded back parallel with and in contact with the covered portion of the wire as shown in Fig. 2. These parts are then held together and the tail 5 is woundaround them in the direction of the arrow aas shown in Fig. 3.
After winding the tail tightly around the the wire as shown in Fig. 4 the terminal will be securely connected with the wire -parallel stripped andcovered'portions of I From the above it will be obvious that .the stripped end of the wire binding of all possible fray of the wire cover into the coil is effected and. at the same time two or more absolute contacts with the stripped portion of wire at every turn of the coil are obtained.
The terminal as shown is made substantially Y-shaped in form struck out of a sheet of soft copper so that the shank or tail 5 may be Wrapped around the admin the manner above set forth.
I claim:
1. A wire terminal of the class described comprising a head formed at one end to engage a binding post, and a pliable exteni. sion of less width than the head extending from the other end thereof, the head being formedywith an aperture to receive a Wire about which the extension is adapted to be Wound helically.
2. A1 wire terminal struck from a sheet of pliable metal comprising a head, a pair of parallel arms extending forwardly from the head, and a strip extending rearwardly from one side of the rear end ofathe head and forming'an oblique angle with respect to the arms, the head being formed with an aperture to receive a wire about which the strip is adapted to be wound.
