A further object of the invention is to provide a needle guide mechanism of im proved construction and operation, and with this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims.

the thread guard is connected by means of a light tension spring 42 with the post 34 The thread guard 40 is provided with an inwardly extending projection 44 which is adapted to abut against the surface of the needleguide and properly position the thread guard'when the needle guide is in retracted position, as shown in Fig. 1. When the needle guide is oscillated toward the work, the thread guard comes into engagement with the work substantially simultaneously with the groove cutter 22, and during continued movement of the groove'cutter to form the stitch receiving groove the thread guard is supported by the work, relative movement between the thread guard and the needle guidebeing permitted by virtue of the yielding connection between these parts. Upon retraction of the needle the needle guide is also retracted, and as the groove cutter moves away from engagement with the work the thread guard is urged by the spring 42 into its normal. position for protectingthe needle guide from catching the loop of thread, as shown in Fig. 1.
The nature and scope of the invention having been indicated and the preferred form of the invention having been specifically described, what is claimed is:
1. A lockstitch sewing machinehaving,
in combination, stitch forming devices including a hook needle, a needle guide havcludinga hook needle, a needle guide having a cutting edge for forming a stitch receiving groove in the work, a thread guard forv the needle guide, and means for vield'ingly" mounting the thread guard with relation to the needle guide to permit indentation of the work bythe cutting edge of the, needle guide without interference by the threat guard. 3..A lockstitch-. sewing machine having, in combination, stitch forming devices inv eluding a hook needle, a needle guide having a cutting edge for forming a stitch receiving groove in the work, a thread guard pivoted on the needle guide, anda spring connecting the thread guard and the needle guide to permit relative movement between. the thread guard and-needle guide as the latter performs the groove cutting operation.-
