The present invention comprehends a lock joint and method of producing the same for establishing a strong and eectual connection between the meeting edges of sections of materials, which when used in connec- "tionwith a bindino means positively precludes unauthorize opening and resealing withoutdetection. More specifically the invention comprehends a lock joint for connecting the meetving' edges 'of sections of material having at least three plies,'which comprises portions of the outer plies of each section extending beyond the intermediate ply 4or plies, .in which said portions are scored, bent and `interengaged to provide a flush locking con- Y nection, and with which'means is employed for binding and sealing said portions in interengaged or locked relation.
The invention. furthermore comprehends a lock joint and. method of producing the same .which are simple, inexpensive and eiici nt.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 10 and 11 designate two sec 'tions' of material, the meeting 'edges of which are to be joined by a lock joint in accordance with the invention. The material m'ust be of three or more plies, includ- .ing the outer plies 12 and 13, 'and an intermediate ply 14, which, as illustrated, isv a corrugated iiller. In utilizing material ofv thisl nature as manufactured, the filler or inner ply or plies 14, is routed back from the edges of the outer plies 12.and 13 a sufficient distance to produce extending portions. Ihe extending portions 15 and 16 of the section 10 are scored at 17 and 18 at a point substantially. intermediate Atheir length to provide bendable terminals 19 and 20, which are bent outwardly and rearv wardly. The extending portions 21 and 22 of the section 11 are scored intermediate terminals 25 and 26, which are designed to be bent inwardly and rearwardly. The extending faces are in contact and -he terminals 25 and 26 are interengaged between the tertheir length at 23 and 24 to provide bendable I yminals 19 and'20 and the extending portions i 15 and 16 which obviously positions the terminals 19 and 20 between the terminals 25 and 26, and thel extending portions 21 and v22 of the'section 1,1. This arrangement obviously produces "'ajf-loclrf joint in which the free edges of the'terminals 19 and 20 engage within the bigh'ts formed by the rearward bending of the terminals 25 and 26 along the score lines 23 and 24, and likewise engage the free edges of the terminals 25 and 26 within 'the bights formed by the bending of the terminals 19 and 20 along the score lines 17 and 18. In order to prevent relative outward swinging movements of the interengaged portions, a suitable binding means may be employed, such as glue or any other suitable adhesive,`Which-is preferably applied between the confronting faces of the terminal 25 and the extending portion 15 and they confrontingvfaces of thel terminal 25 and the extendingportion 16. In glieu of an adhesive, a metal'binding strip 27 may be passedfor threaded betweeny the terminal 19 and the extending portion 21, the exposed end portions of the binding strip being lsecured by a suitable seal28.
'In lieu of either an adhesive or a metal binding strip, stitching may be use d'to secure the interlocked -joined portions. t o gether. This is 'a distinct advantage 1n that heretofore stitching of corrugatedcontainers was impracticable due to the fact j that the corrugated inner ply or'filler would of necessity collapse,l whereas' with the present form of joint the stitching will extend through solid plies or layers only. V
. Fig. 3 illustrates the lock joints at A and B lsecured by an adhesive to form the carton. C. Fig. 4 illustrates the lock joint D forming the body -of the carton produced adjacent a corner thereof. Fig. 5 illustrates a completed carton having lock joints between the meeting edges of the end flaps F, bound by means of a metal binding strip and sealed.
'The method of connecting the meeting. edges of sections of a' three-ply material essentially. consists in either.l removing a portion of the intermediate ply of each sectionadjacent the free edges ofthe outer plies or otherwise forming the meeting edges with portions of the `outer plies proends joined by a seal.
What is claimed is:l

A lock joint for connecting the meeting edgesofy sections. of a three-ply material, comprising portions of the outer plies of each section extending beyond the 'intermediate -ply, said portions being scored7 bent and interengagedto provide a locking connection. t C j 2.'
