lie it. known that l, SAMUEL G. LEI'ICH, a resident of Somerville. in the county of hiiddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartons, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to cartons and more particularly to that type in Which strips of hexibic material are employed for securing tin of a folded and but blank or sheet together.

It has been common practice to employ a strip oi single thickness which was extended also partly over the end flaps and slitted sulliciently to permit the end flaps to be folded into position. Owing to the great stress at the corner or at the joint Where the slit in the connecting strip terminates, the strip when folded, frequently com 'mcnccs to rip so that the connecting strip would be ineffective to form the joint between the contiguous edges of the sheet.
iiccording to the present invention, the strip r) slittcd as indicated atb at each end, and the portions outside of the slits form tabs for securely connecting the end flaps to the reinforcing strip. The intermediate portions between the slits are folded inwardly as at b and then reverted as at I)" toform three thicknesses of material at the corners Where the strip makes the joint or connects the ends of the sheet. The intermediate portions which are folded inwardly are preferably Wider at their outer ends so that when they are folded the outer parts thereof will underlie the tabs 6-. The adhesive on the inner face of the inner thickness will cause that portion of the strip to adhere to the edges of the box and the outer ends will underlie tabs b". The intermediate thickness will adhere to the outer thiclcncss of material and in this manner the three thicknesses of material will be secured together to the box and form :1- Well reinforced joint and a connection between the edges of the sheet forming the box.
The invention thus exemplifies a box in which :2. reinforced joint or connection is provided which may be provided without materiel increase in cost of the box, because the reinforcement is formed from portions unnecessary on the flaps. Obviously, the three thicknesses of material at the joints, particularly at the corners Where the flaps fold inwardly, will most effectively overcome any breakage at this point where br akage frequently occurs in practice when a single connecting strip is used.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified Within the scope of the appended claims Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

A. box having flaps, and a strip of'fiex ible material lapped around and secured to said flaps and having tabs thereon formed by cutting; slits lengthwise of the strip secured to the end flaps of the box, a portion of the strip intermediate said tabs being folded inwardly and intermediate of its length to form plural thicknesses of material at the end-portions of the joint between the strip and the box.
